The Bed & Breakfast Inn at La Jolla
Ranked #3 of 4 La Jolla B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 July 2013

What a gem! After having been to La Jolla many times in the past, I have to say that the B&B Inn is one of the most unique stays in La Jolla. The rooms are very tastefully decorated with original pieces and a cozy fireplaces, robes, slippers, complimentary sipping Sherry and water. Little touches like the complimentary beach chairs and towels as well as the wonderful 3 course breakfast and daily wine and cheese hour from 5-6PM are the little touches that make your vacation truly special.

The covered parking car port is also a huge plus for La Jolla just make sure to get there early as there are only 5 spots! (if you don't make it in time there is plenty of convenient street parking as well). Margaret the owner was very lovely and served us the candlelit breakfast and Teresa was extremely helpful during our check-in.

This B&B is in a very quiet location, across from the Art Museum and, at the same time, extremely close to downtown La Jolla -- where all the stores and restaurants are awaiting you! It will take you 2 minutes to get there.

The service of the staff and the morning breakfast are excellent. The breakfast is scrumptious -- however, you must choice one of two settings, a first for us, after many years of B&Bing.

Lovely backyard patio for relaxing, as well as a patio on the second floor, where you can capture a view of the ocean. We enjoyed our afternoon snack of cheese and wine/drink out there. There is Internet, but the reception is just so-so, and we had to go into the lounge area (upstairs) to get wi-fi on our iPad.

There are two fabulous rooms -- "The Holiday Suite" (first floor) and the "Pacific View" (second floor), both large and beautifully appointed, with large private baths. We did not stay in either of these rooms, as they were already booked. We had the Peacock Salon, with a small patio, which we loved and were able to leave the door open all night and the ocean breeze was delightful. (Yes, there is A/C, but it is wonderful to sleep with fresh ocean air :-)

There is "limited" off street parking -- tight! We have a Mercedes station and fortunately we were the first guests to arrive, and got the best choice. SUV's go home!

Now for the rest of the story. This well known Inn has been in existence since the 19?? At least 1970's/1980's. (there are comment diaries in all the rooms, and I was reading some comments from 1982). In our "Peacock Room", the bedding was "tired -- NOT worn -- just tired". Same with towels, pillows, etc. There antiques are everywhere. Our armoire door kept sticking, so it was difficult to get to our clothes and the cushions on one of the chairs tired and uncomfortable. :-( (I am just giving examples). When room rates are $250 to $400 per night -- sheets, bedding and towels should be top notch.

Everything is very clean. There is not an elevator, and YOU carry up your own luggage, since I am nearly 70 and a woman, I asked the male desk clerk if he was carrying up the luggage, he said "no".

As to local restaurants -- we ate on the outside patio at the CrabCatcher Restaurant, on Prospect Avenue. A MUST do.......view and food excellent.

Also, the pasta/pizza at Amici Restaurant, on Prospect Ave. -- 2 minutes from the B&B, (also has lovely alfresco dining - water view one block away). We especially enjoyed the Italian style thin crust -- Calabria Pizza at our food server's suggestion.

Gotta go, packing my bags for the Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach, CA -- yep, THE QUEEN MARY SHIP, turned into a hotel.

Room Tip: Choose the Pacific View upstairs or the the Holiday Suite on the ground floor!

Marvelous, detailed review and we appreciate it very much. Thank you for pointing out the problem with the antique armoire. We had it repaired as soon as we heard about it on your maintenance report. I believe it was the attended to the afternoon of your departure. Unless the guest informs us as to problems, we sometimes miss them. So thank you again.

For clarification, the historical 1913 residence became- and still is- the only permitted B&B in La Jolla in 1984. Any other La Jolla hospitality establishments calling themselves a B&B are more akin to a hotel, motel, or property rental. The personalized service and relaxed atmosphere that we provide is a true B&B experience where you can enjoy a sit down breakfast with other travelers, providing you an opportunity to share travel exploits and make new acquaintances. It is similar to visiting old friends who have extended their hospitality by putting you up in their charming guest room. In fact we are known as La Jolla's "Other Guest Room". You mentioned that the journals in the room dated back to 1982 bu the inn was not opened until 1984 - maybe our resident ghost is up to his old tricks again.

I must also point out that the Holiday Guest Room does indeed have a large bathroom and all the guest rooms do have private baths, but the Pacific View Guest Room has a European style bathroom - small but efficient .

We change out our linens on a regular basis but some may slip through. We appreciate the "heads up" that it may be time to take inventory again and retire some of the "tired' lines. The towels, however, are fairly new but I will definitely look into it. As for the pillows, we try to provide 2 billowy pillows and 2 firmer or flatter pillows per bed in order to cover all the bases. Occasionally a guest will request 4 of the same - perhaps you ended up with 4 of the flatter ones. But again, it will be addressed. If in the future you are not happy with the pillows, we will attempt to accommodate your preference upon request.

We welcome SUV's, but you are correct - SUV's are too large for our carport. Ther is however paid parking around the corner and unlimited time parking on Eads directly behind the Inn and on Draper south of the Inn.

I apologize for the reception which is a challenge at best in the La Jolla area as a result of the surrounding hills. Our lath and plaster walls do not make it any easier. But the Lounge area you mentioned is just a few steps from the Peacock Salon Guest Room that you stayed in. Most guests consider this an advantage since the inn's guest computer and printer are located here for their convenience and the lounge/library is seldom if ever occupied. It is like having your own private sitting room which you are welcome to enjoy in casual attire such as robe and slippers along with a cup of coffee while you check your e mails etc.

Unfortunately, small B&B's are not noted for their elevators since most of the historical ones are converted homes. And I was shocked that Steve, who gets great reviews would say "No" to helping you with your luggage. I immediately confronted him and apparently there was some miscommunication. When he was asked if he could assist you, he was in the middle of another matter and had requested that you give him a few minutes to finish up what he was doing. But rather than wait, your companion said she would take it up.
He apologizes for the confusion.

Again, thank you for this detailed review. We always appreciate the opportunity to make improvements and corrections in our performance and accommodations.

We stayed for 3 nights in the beautiful Peacock Suite. Although the room is small with a very small bathroom, it has a balcony with a view of the ocean. The location in La Jolla is minutes from shopping, restaurants and the ocean. The breakfasts were delicious and the hospitality was wonderful.
Should you stay in this room, be warned that it never is dark because of the lace curtain on the balcony door and the constant light on in the common room next door.
I would have preferred if the owner had left the a/c on all night as the weather was hot and humid during our visit and I never really slept well, with the brightness, the preference for hard pillows that seems to be a Western US "thing", and the warmth during the night, even with the windows open.
Still, it is a beautiful B & B and deserves top ratings in spite of some of my preferences.

Room Tip: We only stayed in one room, the Peacok Suite which is small and always has light coming in.

Beautiful, clean, great location. Short walk to everything you want in La Jolla - beach, food, bars, shops. Great room, excellent breakfast, outstanding service. Nice courtyard to enjoy complementary wine and snacks in the evening, and a nice upstairs patio with an slight ocean view.

Room Tip: The Pacific View room was beautiful!

We stayed one night over the Fourth of July with another couple. The location is perfect. We walked to dinner on Prospect Street and later down to the cove to view the fireworks up and
Down the coast. The room was as described on their website. The staff was very helpful. The
Breakfast delicious. The reason I did not give it a 5 star was the bathroom had no counter space
and very small. I would stay again.

Thank you for your review. Yes, the WindanSea, Pacific View, Peacock Salon, and Cove and Kate Sessions Guest Rooms have smaller European Style bathrooms - which was the preference in 1913. Even though we are an historical property we have embellished the bathrooms with glass shelves and small cabinets for our guests to tuck away or put out their toiletries during their stay. We agree the space is limited but efficient and utilized to the maximum. If a guest room with a larger bath is required, there is always the Holiday, the Irving Gill, the Country Village and the Fiesta.

As for value, we offer more than any other Bed & Breakfast in La Jolla as well as San Diego for the rates we charge. located in the quieter section of the village of La jolla but an easy walking distance to some of San Diego's finest restaurants, art galleries, and shops not to mention the cove, cliffs and beach with it's community of local seals, we are centrally located so guests can take advantage of San Diego Downtown and San Diego North County and the various attractions that each offers. Our rates include not only a 3 course sit down gourmet candlelit breakfast but a daily wine and cheese reception along with unlimited amounts of bottled water, soft drinks, coffee, tea, fresh fruit, sweet treats in the dining room throughout the day and fine sipping sherry in all of the guest rooms. Ocean views can be enjoyed from the Irving Gill roof top suite and Inn's 2nd floor patio. Considering all the added amenities, our fabulous location, and our personalized service, the value is there even with the restrictions on the size of some of the bathrooms.

Again thank you for your wonderful review and we look forward to having you as our guest again in the future.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the ‘Ellen Browning Scripps’ room on our first night and the ‘Holiday suite’ for the next three nights. The Ellen Browning Scripps’ room was small, but quaint; however, this room does not offer any type of view so if you desire a lot of space and views, you may want to consider another room such as the ‘Holiday suite.’ The Bed & Breakfast Inn had a great comfortable and cozy feel with picturesque windows yielding plenty of light. The holiday suite was perfect and offered nice views of the courtyard and park across the street. It boasts original wood floors, nice bright windows, and white linens to emphasize cleanliness. The bathroom of the holiday suite was large with an oval-sized tub. If you desire 'space' or the possibility of entertaining a few guests while in La Jolla, this is a perfect suite for that. The beach is right behind the Museum of Modern Arts, which is right across the street from the bed and breakfast. The courtyard is quiet and tranquil with one small fountain and plenty of local plants (e.g., hostas, lilies, hydrangeas, and etc.). However the biggest assets to the bed and breakfast are; Margaret and Steve who are remarkable at entertaining and making all guests feel at home. They are down to Earth, personable, and quite frankly they made it feel like we were staying with extended family members. The breakfast was delightful and home-made by Margaret, an Ireland native during the week and by a different gourmet chef during the weekend. To be honest, I could not tell them apart because all the breakfasts were excellent. Each breakfast commenced with a fruit of sorts, followed by a gourmet egg dish (e.g. Frittata, quiche, etc.). The egg dish featured a side dish of sausage and one or more vegetables with a fruit-based salsa/compote. The finale to breakfast featured some light dessert (e.g., sorbet, Italian cream, and etc.). Homemade cookies and coffee cakes are available in the lobby throughout the day, in which are usually contributed by Steve. The Calabria Coffee and European hot teas are served with milk or cream throughout the day, in which is great. Finally wine and cheese are available around dinner (4 or 5pm), in which features a good red and white wine. The cheeses include; brie, blue gorgonzola, and Swiss. The cheese is served with fruit, mixed nuts, bruschetta, and other items that vary. In summary, we are well traveled and this bed and breakfast is a steal for the quality, service, and food provided!!! I would recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone and I would rather stay there than any other hotel in the area. Further the breakfast provided cannot be beat by any of the surrounding area restaurants and hotels.
