“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2012

It may have once been grand and it was very nice some years ago, but now it is overpriced with very disappointing service and amenities. Poor wi-fi, tiny dated bathrooms, hallways that smell musty, and - even with the renovations (for which they should have closed the hotel rather than subject guests to constant drilling and banging), the look and feel is truly dated and certainly not worthy of 5 stars.

Dear UK Guest,
Our apologies that you found La V less than satisfactory and that the impact of some of our recent renovations was obvious; this should not have been the case. Our team and engineers have worked diligently to ensure that enhancements and renovations do not affect the guest but we do recognize that in a couple instances the work was more intrusive; again our apologies.
A new elevator was completed in the spring and rooms are just about finished. WiFi is on line and we’re planning for HD TV up-grades and installation of on demand options; there are many more great changes on the way that will ensure our grand ambiance for years to come.
Many thanks,
Mark Dibella,
Managing Director

The location is great, but not on the beach, so besides paying for being in town, you are really just paying for the view. Our room was unacceptably small, they really should combine 2 rooms into one and then they would have a normal sized room. Everything about the hotel to me was average, I just think there are many better California resorts than this one.
Other Highlights of our Stay:
1. No TV on demand and no safe in our room.
2. Elevator is crazy slow
3. On the receipts for room service and at the restaurant, they have service charge included on one line and then an open line for gratuity, I would assume people often over tip because of this.
4. The TV was a good sized flat screen, but that should be standard at any decent hotel.

We do not on plan on returning to this hotel

Dear Dallas Traveler –
Please consider a return – there are many reasons to do so that might make your reconsider.
As a classic 85 year old icon, we do indeed have some rooms more intimate in size; that is a product of our signature Spanish Colonial architecture and also of our more individualist boutique venue – we are not a cookie cutter hotel. Our website does note the wide selection of room types available from our classic suites to our individual villas with up to 1,200 sq. ft of space and yes, some rooms at 250 sq. ft. that are well appointed and efficient and provide a great place to land (some with a view) when exploring La Jolla. We believe we have something for everyone’s’ taste and pocket book.
We are in the process of coordinating and installation of on demand TV selections plus HD – our projected install date is this fall and we’re already set with great sized LCD TV’s in our rooms.
We do thank you for giving La Valencia a try and sincerely hope you return. We have great enhancements forthcoming but one thing that will never change; our commanding view of the Pacific Ocean.
Best regards,
Mark Dibella,
Managing Director

We reserved a room at La Valencia and were planning on staying with our pets. One of our dogs is older and has problems navigating steps, hills or walking long distances. After arriving at the hotel and seeing the options for getting to the pet walking area, we decided this would not work for our old girl since she would either have to walk up and down a steep hill or navigate steps to get to the park across the street. It would not have been ideal for our other dog either because the park with packed with children, people and other dogs. She was so distracted watching everything going on, she was not even thinking about potty.

My husband and I stayed at the Valencia Hotel many years ago WOW! We moved out of the Del Coronado Hotel because there was a power failure on Coronado it was the best thing that happened to us. We were visiting La Jolla and saw your Hotel love at first sight! and decided to retrive our luggage from Del Coronado and were lucky to reserve a room at La Valencia.
We will be returning to San Diego in November and will certainly try to stay at one of our favorites in California. I loved the staff and the restaurant on the top floor was spectacular!

Room Tip: i can't say we had a beautiful room on a higher floor with a partial view it was very nice

We held our groom's dinner at La Valencia. These guys are superb professionals - totally organized and prepared, ready for anything, and very much at ease and hospitable. We had four or five real time issues, and there they were with the solution in their hand as if they anticipated the issue. The location is exceptional. Food very good. We were at Estancia for the wedding next day, and they did not measure up to our experience at La Valencia in any dimension.

Also our company organizes about 150 days per year of group hotel events at five star hotels, and I would rank La VAlencia at the top of the list. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Gotta have the ocean view!

I'm pretty picky but this hotel was awesome. We had booked a suite but they upgraded us to an Ocean Villa, we could have moved in. Grounds were beautiful. Breakfast was delicious with beautiful ocean views. This is a historical property so it's pretty old but that's what gives it it's charm. Walking distance to great restaurants (George's, Eddie V's) and shopping. Would stay here anytime!!

We hosted a VIP dinner to honor our President. The entire La Valencia staff did a wonderful job. The service was execellent, the food was delicious and the view was gorgeous. We had the Verandah room which opened up to the outdoor terrace with an ocean view. The staff was professional, very attentive, fast and thorough. Kudos to the Chef too. Thanks to Stephanie and Sofia!

Room Tip: The Verandah meeting room is a great choice for dinners. Unique setting with a beautiful view.

Dear Dallas VIP –
I am extremely pleased at La V and our team provided all the right ingredients to make your dinner a success. Thank you for the extra recognition for Sofia and Stephanie and our Chef and yes, that ocean view is pretty much the icing on the cake for anything you encounter at La Valencia.
