This was our first visit to La Valencia, although we had driven by it many times on previous trips to San Diego. We absolutely loved the hotel and would stay again. I would have given it 5 stars, except our guest room was pretty small. When they say 200 sq. ft., they mean it, so no room service in this room. However, there are other larger rooms which I would request on our next visit. The hotel is gorgeous, updated but still retaining the historical elegance for which its known. We had breakfast at The Terrace which offers beautiful views and delicious food. We enjoyed the pool - Kevin made a fantastic Bloody Mary - and the extra comfortable lawn chairs. Cafe la Rue is the perfect place for a cocktail, snack and people watching. The location in the heart of La Jolla's shopping district is great to wander around. Valet parking is little pricey at $30 per night, but the valet staff is quick and very personable. Overall we truly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: DO NOT CHOOSE A VINTAGE KING! This is a really small room. It's worth the extra $$ to have an ocean view room.

Dear Location Guest -
I am especially pleased to read your accolades on several of our great staff. - thank you. And I do agree that Cafe la Rue serves up an awesome Bloody Mary! Our Vintage rooms are intimate - actually 250 sq. ft. with all the right amenities. We also offer larger accommodation choices in our Classic or Villa room types so variety is served up at every level.
Thank you for the great review - come back soon.

We stayed at the La Valencia for two nights with some family friends. When we checked in we got upgraded to a suite! We got there early so they stored our luggage while we enjoyed the pool, which was family friendly. The hotel was within walking distance of many restaurants, so we walked to a place which was recommended by the hotel, and it was very nice. The next day we came and went from the hotel several times, and they made it easy by bringing our car right up to the front for us. I have to say that the staff was extremely friendly without exception. The surroundings were lovely. What was really nice about the hotel was that it was small enough to have a cozy feel, yet nice enough to feel like you were staying at a luxury resort. I would stay here again if/when I come back.

What an absolutely beautiful, quaint hotel! The rooms are somehow spacious while the overall building remains cozy. Love the decor, the beds are comfortable with five (5!) pillows on each, the location & view are amazing...THIS is the place to stay in La Jolla! Love it!

We loved everything about La Valencia and La Jolla. We visited San Diego 2 summers ago with our kids and stayed in the Pacific Beach area. We rode our bikes to La Jolla during that visit and loved the area, so when we planned to come back we looked into staying in La Jolla.

We loved the charm of La Valencia. We had an ocean view room at the end of the hallway, which meant we had 2 windows with ocean views and lots of light. This trip was to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and La Valencia commemorated it with a bottle of champagne and beautiful chocolate dipped strawberries. The room wasn't huge, but it was enough for 2 of us without feeling cramped. There were 2 sitting chairs and a desk/chair.

The service was pretty much impeccable. Everyone from the valet to housekeeping to the food and beverage staff were professional, friendly and welcoming. The head concierge, Nancy, always remembered our names and spoke with us when we saw her. She was helpful in numerous ways when we needed her.

The food was delicious! Of all the places we ate while in La Jolla, the food at La V was the best! Be sure to try their chips with guacamole and salsa, the fish tacos, beef burgers, lobster bisque, and their morning juice special. All so full of flavor. And be sure to eat on the terrace, definitely for sunset. The terrace overlooks the pool, Scripps Park and the beautiful ocean. We enjoyed breakfast at the hotel almost every day, on the terrace if we could.

Starbucks is next door, but I highly recommend the coffee at La V. Café La Rue serves coffee to take out in the morning. Our routine was to get up early, grab a coffee to go and walk the boardwalk and the beaches in the area.

The pool area was awesome. The pool was heated just right. There is a large variety of seating on the pool deck, from deck chairs, to tables, to sofa type seating. On a busy day it could be hard to get a lounge chair. Food and beverage service is available with the same delicious food as the rest of the hotel.

We would highly recommend staying here and it's suitable for everyone- couples, family, extended family. It's close to the beaches, shopping, San Diego is close, there are many sea lions to see in the area. In fact, we had one who "barked" every night!

Can't wait to go back again.

Room Tip: we were on the ninth floor at the end of the hallway. My in-laws were on the same floor, but not at the end. Being on the end meant we had a window and a French door, while the other rooms just had the one door, so less light.

The La Valencia, I was assured by my local friends, is the best hotel in La Jolla. I was not disappointed during a recent visit. This is an older hotel (I would guess 80-90 years) and it is obvious that the management has worked hard to preserve its charming character while still providing modern conveniences. Set on the side of a steep seaside bluff, one actually enters the main entrance on the 7th floor! Upon entering you are struck by the classic design, warm colors, fresh flowers and intricate paint patterns on the walls and ceilings. The staff is very friendly and professional. Check-in was a breeze. The rooms are on the small side by modern standards, but this is to be expected in a hotel of this era. The decorations are in keeping with the overall historic character and very elegant. Everything is spotless and the classic style of things like the shower belies modern function. My only complaint with the room was that the window (which was not original) did not function properly—one of the sashes in fact coming completely off track. I reported this, but management was unable to correct it during my 4-day stay. Views from the rooms high enough to see the ocean are spectacular! The restaurant and bars are all excellent (reviewed separately). This hotel isn’t cheap, but in this case you really do get what you pay for! Next time I am in town I will stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a seaside view.

Dear Best Guest-
Many thanks for your fabulous review and great descriptions - we do take great pride in maintaining our circa 1926 icon and vintage charm while ensuring 2014 conveniences and services. I do apologize that we could not address the window sash during your stay - I am happy the rest of your experience stood out.
See you back soon.
