Just returned from a 5 day stay at The Grande Colonial with my spouse. We enjoyed great service and hospitality throughout the week. Thanks to Benny the doorman; always there with a friendly greeting and a willingness to assist!

My husband and I stayed for our 10th Anniversary at the Grand Colonial. We got a great room in the "Little Hotel by the Sea". Everything was beautiful. Went to the concierge desk told them we were only going to be there for about 24hrs and they gave us fabulous restaurant recomendations and quick things to do. The problem came around 1:00am when a wedding party had an impromtu get together in the common loft area above us. We called the front desk and asked them to do something about it. They said the would, and true to their word the party was broken up. The next problem was the next morning when we checked out we ran into the people that had the party and they informed us that management told them it was us that complained. That was uncomfortable for my husband and I who just wanted to enjoy our one night away. I talked to managment and they reimbursed me my valet parking fee. Other than that it was a great hotel and the staff was great. If you stay just ask if you are going to be by a wedding party.

Dear Brownbis:
I just wanted to send you a note to say thank you for taking the time to post your review of your recent stay at our hotel. We very much appreciate the feedback. Let me apologize to you for not only the noise you experienced (our ocean-view rooftop loft/deck can be a draw for wedding parties), but, more importantly, the way it was handled. Please know that we will address this with our staff and reinforce our standards for maintaining privacy and confidentiality for all of our guests. I thank you again for your time and consideration and do hope you will have the chance to visit us again in the future.

Our family with two kids 11 and 7 stayed for a few days in April. Excellent location within walking distance to everything La Jolla has to offer. Very comfortable and well appointed rooms. I found the price to be good considering the quality and location of this hotel.

On street parking was plentiful just around the corner from the hotel, so I am glad that I saved money by not using the valet parking.

Great food and shopping within walking distance. We also enjoyed the short walk to see the seals at the Children's Beach.

Only things that would have made it better would be a warmer pool (it was the only hotel in our stay in various hotels in southern California that was not heated this time of year), and a coffee maker in the room. I found it very odd that there was no in room coffee maker in a hotel of this quality and price.

Pros: It was a nice old style hotel in a great location and exceptional staff. Everything we asked for was accommodated. The room service was very good and Nine Ten (the restaurant) was amazing! The room was good size and the bed was very comfortable. Free internet.

Cons: We had an "ocean view" room but really could only see the ocean around other buildings. We were looking forward to sleeping while listening to the waves but that also came with listening to the trash compactor and the sounds of bottles being dumped into the dumpster. The pool is very small.

Overall, our experience was great. If you are looking for a stay in a modern hotel with modern amenities this isn't for you.

You cannot beat the location or the charm of the Grand Colonial, within a block of the beach, the great boutique shopping area and many great restaurants. We were lucky to stay in the 'Little Hotel' a junior suite in the building closest to the ocean and booked the package: stay 3 nights for price of 2, This separate apartment building felt like home and was extremely quiet, we kept our windows open at night and fell sleep to the crashing waves.

Our room (#238) was recently renovated, very roomy and tastefully decorated and had a pull out couch and kitchenette. The linens were top quality and included a cozy down comforter and down pillows. Each day while we were out, the hotel staff would replenish any food items we used which included waters, sodas, small bags of chips and candy bars, all complimentary, a very nice touch! I have stayed at many 4 and 5 star hotels and this one is definitely at the top of my list: it's a gem!

We also enjoyed an incredible dinner at the hotel restaurant: Nine Ten, it's got a great Zagat rating and we completely agree with all the write ups, do not miss it!

This was our first stay at this hotel and our family of 4 (including 9 and 14 year old sons) agreed that we definitely would stay here again. Our room was small (but comfortable) and overlooked Prospect Street, one of La Jolla's main streets for shopping and dining. We really enjoyed the hotel's proximity to the beach and nearby restaurants and happily have no complaints about our room or hotel services. The hotel staff was great , especially Benny, the doorperson, who went out of his way to be helpful and pleasant. While there is street parking pretty close to the hotel, we chose to valet our car for $22/day so it could be in a secure lot. (We actually were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go).
Our favorite activity in La Jolla is relaxing on the black lava-like rocks next to the water while our kids look for crabs in the tidepools. We brought small aquarium nets and plastic containers and caught dozens of hermit crabs as well as some other larger colorful crabs. After looking at them, we gently returned them to where we found them. The next time we visit we plan to rent kayaks when the water is just a bit warmer.
While La Jolla has many great resataurants, we chose the more casual family-friendly ones. Our favorites were SmashBurger, which is brand new and right next door to the hotel, and The Spot, which is across the street and a couple of doors down. SmashBurger has great food and is incredibly inexpensive. We especially loved the sweet potato french fries and the burgers with numerous fresh topping choices. The Spot was really good also. We went wild over the cinnamon and rum glazed chicken wings which, if you like wings, were just to die for!!
