We booked 4 nights at La Jolla Shores for our family with one teenage boy. The best thing about this hotel is its location. It's on a large wide sandy beach just north of the Cove in La Jolla. It's not a few streets away. It's ON the beach. That being said it was easy to come and go during the day. It was convenient for my husband and son's surfing lesson and sea kayaking. Both were highlights for people from Utah. The staff were all very nice and helpful. Be aware it is next door to the public park and beach access so it's fairly crowded, but not a detriment.

That being said, it is a nice size only three stories tall; maybe 100 rooms. Unfortunately it is older and not at all updated in the room decor. The upholstery bordered on being gross. It was clean, but hardly what I expected for $200-$300 per night. The lighting was poor, had "popcorn" acoustic ceilings and old tile on the showers. The kitchenette (which I liked having) was the original and the sliding door old, worn and heavy. DO get the kitchenette and bring your own breakfast and lunch foods if you want to save some money. All the food in La Jolla is very expensive. A $25 dinner is the norm and goes up from there. The pool is quite small and the hot tub was about 4' x 8'. Also be aware that though we had clear cloudless weather, the fog socked us in for 4 days. Ten miles away it was sunny. We also had access to the two tennis courts that are adjacent to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Hotel which is just south of this hotel on the beach. I believe it is a step up and you would pay dearly for that. I ended up playing tennis at THAT tennis club and had a wonderful time. There is one restaurant on the property that is quite spendy. My family only had breakfast there and it was fine. I'm not used to older, smaller, musty coastal living, so my opinions might be skewed. We might try a private home rental next time. There are plenty of them around. We wanted access to a pool though. Parking is $14 per day and wifi was free.

We have stayed with LJ Shores three times and I'm sure we'll come back for a fourth. Two parents and two kids are snug but not cramped in the double queen rooms. Put grandparents in an adjoining King+Kitchenette and you have ample space. The restaurant is on the high end for our family with younger kids, but works well for breakfast. There's plenty of eateries within a 2 minute walk.

You can bring a radio flyer wagon full of beach gear straight from your room and out on the beach. The number of affordable hotels right on the beach are easily counted and this is one of them.

It is our first night here and my family can't sleep because we can hear the neighbors do everything from talking, walking, screaming, etc. The location is great but this isn't a hotel for families. I would recommend Coronado if you are looking to relax. The price is about the same and it doesn't seem have these problems. It's too bad since we were really looking forward to staying here.

I wish to thank you for sharing your concerns about your recent stay with us. We agree that we have a wonderful location but it appears that we did not give you the postive experience we wish for all of our guests. I would hope that you would give us another opportunity to make sure that both the location and the ambience match your expectations.

Respectfully

Really nice Hotel right on the beach, really nice clean and pool was protected from the cool winds off the water. We stayed there in march 2010 so it was a little cool mid 60's to 70.

what a pretty area. one of the cleanest area's in the US. will come back again

This hotel is right on the beach and that is its greatest feature. The rooms are comfortable, updated, clean. The staff is friendly. We had the most relaxing vacation possible at La Jolla Shores. I will be back.

Room Tip: Be nice to the staff and be patient if your room is not ready
