This is a great hotel for everyone. It seems very secluded but is only a few miles from La Jolla and easy access to the freeway.
You could drive by the property and never see it.
There are alot of trees/flowers/etc for a homey feeling.
The spa and pool area are lovely as are the grounds.
Alot of the rooms have balconies or patio's.
The Adobe restaurant does a great breakfast. Buffet or ala carte.
Mustangs and Burros has a great feel with an outdoor fireplace and music nightly. Their specialty is margarita's. Scented candles are all over the property and lit at night for a romantic feel.
The hotel has alot of meeting space and is only 3 stories high.
suite 124 is really nice if you want a nice place to relax. It is very large. The 'regular' rooms are a nice size also.
The staff is great and very accomodating.

We just got back from attending a wedding at the Estancia and were very satisfied with everything. We had a garden view room with two double beds....the room size was very adequate and the bathroom was also large and very adequate. The counter top in the bathroom was plenty roomy and was able to hold all of my wife's "necessities" and my shaving kit.

The restaurant prices were quite high so we wound up eating all our meals out except the wedding meal which was very good...no complaints. As everyone notes, the grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. The front desk people, while all young, were very professional and very helpful with directions and suggestions on where to eat, hike and sightsee.

We had been warned about the parking fees...$20 per night for self-parking....and advised to park across the street in the UCSD parking garage. It was a great suggestion and we would have done it (2 minute walk) until they told us it would only be $8 because we were there for a wedding. Parking in the garage would have been free because it was a holiday weekend, and I think that is the case on other weekends as well. Something to consider if you want to save a few bucks!

La Estancia is a beautiful resort property unlike anyplace I've ever been -- lush gardens and gorgeous guest plazas.

However, if you go to La Estancia looking for the perfect spa experience, you will be disappointed. In this case, style far outweighs substance. Upon arriving, we found used dental floss on our sink. We also had discovered that two of the three massage reservations we had made in advance of our stay were simply incorrect. Yes, La Estancia has a spa, but the amenities are fairly blase. There's one big waiting room where you and other robed guests wait on furniture that's a little old and beaten up. (Any of the Sanctuary Day Spas in Salt Lake City beat the pants off this place for atmosphere.) As for the therapists, I may have just been unlucky but mine were fairly mediocre.

On the plus side, the room was kept clean (dental floss notwithstanding) and the location is within 5 minutes (driving) of just about anything you need or anywhere you want to go in La Jolla. And again, the grounds are really quite incredible. There were three weddings while we were there and I can see why.

Estancia is a cozy, quaint and inviting hotel. The staff is warm and friendly and really makes you feel welcome. Service at the restaurant was wonderful and the food outstanding. There were many people staying there but I could easily find a nice quiet spot on the beautiful grounds for some quiet time. I would love to come back again and again!

My second stay - both times on tense business in off season.

The grounds are the best part of the hotel - flowers, candles, fire pits, saline pool with fireplace, mineral hot tub. The spa is good.

The rooms were quiet (and I am a light sleeper); I had a courtyard view. The decor is relaxed, the bed comfortable.

The staff was young and pleasant and attractive, and some (especially
the bar tender) were very competent. I suspect the UCSD across the street provides much of the staff. There seems to be no concierge, and the front desk was vague on directions, but it is hard to go wrong in La Jolla.

The wine bar has excellent small plates. I had my main meal at lunch in La Jolla and wine and Kobe beef or seared tuna in the evening.

If you can relax and enjoy the gardens and not worry about the expense it is a great place.

If you expect top efficiency and low prices - stay someplace other than La Jolla. This is Southern California - you are right above a surfer beach and next to a glider port.

Well, all in all the experience at Estancia was OK. The grounds are beautiful and well kept and the staff was very helpful. However, there are a few negative things that I think are worth mentioning. The room and bathroom were nice, but there is no soundproofing. I was up half the night listening to the guy next door snore!! We had upgraded to the Estates room, which I thought would be great. We were on the first floor and there was only room for one person to sit outside on the tiny patio. The restaurant Adobe was VERY disappointing. The dinner was expensive and really not good. We had the breakfast buffet and the scrambled eggs were watery and everything else was dried up, not tasty, and TERRIBLE. I would not recommend this hotel.

The Estancia is a very comfortable, beautifully decorated, low-key hotel. It is exceptionally well-located if business or pleasure take you to the University of California-San Diego, which is across the street. The hotel is deceptively large, which can make for waits at the front desk. Staff are friendly and try to be helpful, although I couldn't get an internet connection problem resolved (ethernet cables provided by the hotel didn't fit the connection provided, and wireless reception was too weak in my room to support anything but basic email service). Also, the front desk was uninformed on the various reasonably-priced airport shuttle services that operate out of SAN - all the info they had was for high-end limo services. I booked a shuttle trip to the airport myself for $25. (Cab fare is $50 one way, and the hotel does not offer a shuttle).

The room rates at this hotel are probably worth it if the hotel is your vacation destination, or if you intend to avail yourself of the spa's services (also very pricey). The rooms are quite nice, and the bathroom is among the nicest I've seen. But for a business trip, it was overpriced, especially with the internet problems I experienced.

The food was quite good, both at the restaurant and at a catered event.
