“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2012

This hotel is on the small side as far as the pool and grounds are concerned. It definitely does not have a huge resort feel, which can be nice depending on who you're traveling with. We traveled with our kids this time to go water skiing in Mission Bay in San Diego and we all enjoyed the trip. There was never a problem finding chairs by the pool, but after a short period at the pool the kids were done. Most times when traveling with kids we stay in condos or bigger hotels with multiple pools/slides but after staying a few times in Mission Bay area when they were smaller we found most of those hotels to be pretty run down. This time we opted to stay 5 minutes outside of Mission Bay area and we were very happy with the choice.

The room and bathroom were very nice, we didn't feel cramped at all. We had a tiny balcony and chair that viewed the grassy area where they hold weddings. One negative was the weddings taking place made it awkward to walk around the grounds- we didn't want to intrude, but the grounds were so pretty we wanted to explore them the first night we were there.

We ordered food by the pool one day for lunch, and I thought the prices were reasonable and the food quantity was good. Most vacations we never order food by the pool because the prices are insane and they give you a tiny appetizer size portion.

The Mustang and Burros restaurant patio is so pretty- my husband and I went there both nights we stayed. The first night we went to use our complimentary margarita card they gave us at check-in. It turned out to be one of the negatives- which is weird. The margarita tasted like gatorade with margarita mix to top it off- couldn't taste any tequila. It was fluorescent colored so I really do think it was gatorade. The server looked a little annoyed we weren't ordering food as well so it was a bit of a negative. I'm glad we went back the next night though for happy hour. Our drinks were much better quality and the appetizer special was great as well. The prices were great and we loved the ambiance on the patio. The hostesses were very nice both times, and the service the 2nd time was great- so maybe the first server was just having a bad day.

Overall the hotel grounds are beautiful- it has a very intimate feel. I would love to come stay again- especially with just my husband, but I would bring the kids back as well. Any time I plan on going to the San Diego area, this will be my hotel of choice.

My husband and I found this hotel on Snique Away and decided to stay for a couple of nights before a wedding in Hermosa Beach. For starters, the valet guys are awesome! They are extremely helpful and informative and quick to give good service. If you drive to the hotel, you don't have a choice but to valet which is an added $20/night or so.
Other than that, the service was mediocre at best. I rarely saw the front desk people smile and housekeeping is extremely slow to respond to requests. They even ended up with a shirt of mine (i think on accident) and didn't return until i called and then took hours to bring to us.
The slow service might have something to do with the confusing maze like set up of the rooms and layout itself.
Rooms are very nice. Comfy beds and nice shower. We had a tiny balcony but there are some bigger ones.
The salt water pool and hot tub are great! But if you want to have a good time at the pool; this is not the hotel for you. It was absolutely silent-no music- no bar. can call for service there if you'd like.
The location itself is not ideal. It is in a beautiful part of la jolla but you cannot walk anywhere but to glider/black beach which is a great place if you want to hike and privately surf but be aware that it is nudist. It is a short 10 min drive into downtown la jolla or to del mar but if you want to walk to restaurants/shops, it's better to stay in downtown la jolla instead.
There are 3 restaurants on site but all serve the same menu which is wierd. I recommend the chips and salsa (put a great spice on the chips) and the ravioli dish. We didn't order room service so can't comment on that.
The gym didn't have much to offer. I have heard the spa is the best in all la jolla although I didn't indulge :(
All in all, i was pleased since we got a good deal but would not pay the full price they demand. I instead would stay downtown.

Thank you for your review! We are elated to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa. We apologize for the miscommunication regarding parking. You can self park as well, next time please ask and we will show you how! We know our location is a little bit out of town, and we think it's great! There is so much to do at the resort, that we feel you never need to leave. Take a dip in the jacuzzi or get a facial at the spa, or even a margarita at Mustangs & Burros. Please join us again soon, we would love to see you!

This is a very nice hotel. It is located between the UCSD campus and the ocean so it is very convenient for meetings at UCSD. It is very quiet which I like. That also makes it a less stressful environment than some other hotels in the area. That said, some people will not like its isolation in terms of things to do and restaurants. But generally, one needs to get in a car to do anything in the San Diego, La Jolla, area.

Room Tip: If you are interested in quiet, then ask for a room facing the internal courtyard and not near the m...

This hotel experience was outstanding. The resort itself is huge, and quite a bit of walking if you're not prepared. The pool and spa are located on the far end of the property from the lobby, however the journey there is beautiful! The restaurant is awesome, and they have some really cool outdoor seating with fire pits. I attended a meeting in their State-of-the-Art meeting facilities, and they have fresh food brought out in the foyer every few hours. There isn't really anywhere to go around the resort, but you don't really need to leave. I would definitely go there again, maybe for pleasure to get a massage!

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard/garden view room.

Estancia was a great escape from the hustle of San Diego yet was so accessible to I-5 to head south to the city or north to Carlsbad. Or, it was perfectly fine to stay in La Jolla. The property is beautiful, with relaxing gardens featuring many cacti and succulents. Green space abounds. The spa is small but charming and the services were good. I didn't like the "Shall I add 20% gratuity to your bill?" leading question upon my checkout from spa. A bit pushy. And, the self park option was not evident, thus forcing me to valet park (for additional $). I did raise this issue and they removed the valet charge but still parked the car for me. Nicely handled but still left me wondering "where is the self-park?" Lots of families were present (small children) which the many grassy greens were nice for little legs to run. There are lots of quiet private common areas as well. All in all, I give this an A.

Room Tip: A courtyard room gives a charming view of the inner gardens but exterior rooms are also quite nice...

More or less Estancia is just average. Some parts are nice but some parts are worn. The mattress was not very comfortable and the pillows were very lumpy. The room had a flat screen TV but no HD. The inner courtyard was nice but why only one chair on your patio or balcony? The rooms are overpriced and my newspaper was two days old. I rate Estancia at 3 1/2 stars.
