“Beautiful grounds, sub-par service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2012

We started off on the wrong foot - we checked in at mid-night and caught the hotel at an off moment. The front desk fellow had clearly just woken up and was not particularly pleasant. Worse than that, as soon as he gave us our keys, he disappeared and there was no one to help with our bags. So we found a luggage cart and wheeled our many bags through the deserted resort by ourselves. The room itself was fine - nothing special, nothing surprising, but nice. Fast forward to the next morning - when we were startled awake by the sweet sounds of a groundskeeper whacking/trimming/hedging/who knows what with power tools outside our window. This went on from 8-9:30AM without a break. It happened the next morning as well. AWFUL. What else: the pool does not have an espresso machine, so we were told to order our morning cappuccinos from room service if we wanted them by the pool. The pool people literally pointed to a phone on the other side of the pool area and said "If you want something, go use that phone." 30 minutes and $17 later (!!!) we were served two bitter, lukewarm cappuccinos. Oh - and there are no sea views. You are a stone's throw from beautiful coastline, but not way to see it from the property. As others have mentioned, the balcony is a tiny sliver, with only one chair. Not very appealing. But, the grounds are beautiful, the mission style very attractive. And individual folks were largely pleasant, if sort of confused by their own policies (why is valet parking $25, while park yourself is $20; why do you have to reserve and pay for certain lounge chairs at the pool when the pool is empty, etc.). We were disappointed, but nothing a new approach to service can't fix!

My wife and I came down with our three kids for a three-night stay. We decided to upgrade to a King Suite with separate sleeping quarters for Mom and Dad. After a hiccup in the reservations, in which the front desk failed to check on availability before upgrading, the Hotel Manager stepped in and secured the upgrade for 2 of the 3 nights. On the 3rd night, we packed our bags and prepared to move to a smaller room, but luckily the suite became available so we gladly paid the upgrade fee. Here, we give kudos to Management for acknowledging the initial mistake and promptly making things right.

The swimming pool itself is minimalist, just adequate for kids compared to more family-oriented resorts around San Diego, but my wife and I loved the relaxing pool area, including the fire pit and the fireplaces. We liked the nice big jacuzzi. We also felt that the Estancia hotel grounds and gardens were more beautiful than the famed Hotel del Coronado .

We recommend that you include breakfast in your vacation package, if you have the option. The breakfast buffet is better than most, and the kids can eat right away.

The Voss water and other amenities included in the resort fee were a nice touch, adding value to the typically bloated resort fees.

Valet service was friendly and helpful.

Our TV did not work, and maintenance promptly fixed the problem. The resort threw in a free movie, plus milk and cookies for the kids. Nice touch.

The restaurants are priced a little on the high end for a family of five. We enjoyed one nice dinner on the property. After that, we found several dining options within a few short miles.

San Diego is our favorite weekend family getaway. We would definitely consider the Estancia again.

One thing I would recommend is keeping a basic stock of family-friendly games with the concierge or the front desk.

Overall, thanks from our family for a most enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Update to a two-room suite if available. It was much more comfortable for a family of five.

The Estancia is an all-round brilliant hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful, the food is brilliant and the staff is the most helpful I've come across. Especially the guys at the front, even returning from a run they greet you and offer you a bottle of water :) I can't recommend it highly enough.

The grounds and pool area of this hotel are very beautiful with a Mission style that we love. You will feel hidden away in the beautiful hills of La Jolla. Of course at resorts that are a little out of the way, your experience is determined by the SERVICE, and that is where they lost us.

Front desk staff was OK but not very warm. No biggie.

At poolside, although there was only 1 other family there at 1pm when we arrived, I waited 15 minutes for someone to come serve us then surmised that we had to order up at the grill. When I went up there, the 4 or so staff gathered there were a little less than friendly when they asked what I needed. When I asked how to order, he then ushered me back to our chairs to take the order. The food took at least 45 minutes (I know this b/c my partner was at spa and returned right after it came) and was NOT as described on the menu! Had to ask for utensils, etc etc. Then he pressured us into signing our bill several times until I finally told him that we were going to be there a while (as was he!). Next day, same sort of thing - had to beg to order and wait a long time. Quality of food was average.

At breakfast, same story. Waiter was AWOL most of the time, so we ended up grabbing utensils, sugar, and cream for my coffee from the buffet ourselves. We wished we had other dining options by day 2 so we chose to drive into town because there isn't anything within walking distance.

My sister told us the story of the restaurant service where she waited 30 minutes for her check and also not getting toiletries from housekeeping. I hope she writes her own review.

Grounds are nice but the level of service was unacceptable and really a bummer.

Room Tip: Ask whether your room has a view or not. Ours looked over a pathway on the backside of the hotel but...

Estancia was a great getaway after days at the beach and in la jolla with family (8 min drive to the cove). I would recommend this hotel to others looking for a more peaceful retreat when returning from SD based activities. Among other reviews, I liked the added $17/nt charge that covered wifi, Voss waters in room, newspaper, Starbucks in room coffee and fitness center. Some hotels charge that just for wifi or fitness. My wife and I had daily room service and was very surprised by the quality and taste of the food. Some of the best I have had in recent memory. Juices were all freshly squeezed and omletes to muffins were nicely done. Room service did forget our breakfast meat on our omlete the first morning and did not pickup dishes left outside until the second call later in the evening. We mentioned this the next morning and they seemed on it for the rest of the stay. Similar to other posts, there were a lot of weddings over the weekend and it was to be expected. My wife and I didn't mind much but we were tucked away from the festivities as we asked for a quit room apon check-in ( recommended for summer weekend stays). We had the Veranda King and the room was not a great size but the bathroom was nice and big so the wife approved:). Balconies on 99% of rooms are small and like others mentioned; only one chair? Must have been and oversight as I still don't understand it. Pool area was very nice and fitness center small and was in need of a deep clean as most equipment like weights and stretching equipment were dirty. All in all, very pleased with Estancia and would stay here again if I was in the La Jolla area.

This hotel is nicely built around central courtyards, away from the street, so that it feels like an estate or resort property.

The hallways are a maze leading in all directions, but that breaks up the feeling of size and makes it have an intimate feel, in spite of its size. The bar and restaurants are relaxed; breakfast is good, and service is attentive.

Our room was spacious and very clean. We will be returning.

There is a parking fee of $20 for self park or $25 for valet and you will need a car to get anywhere except to the Salk Institute and the UCSD campus, which are across the street. But compared to the hotels down near the beach in La Jolla Shores or La Jolla's business district, this hotel is away from the crowds.
