After a day at Del Mar Racetrack, it's nice to settle in to a quiet, calming hotel. This was our third stay here and we've never been disappointed. The grounds are well-manicured, the rooms are clean and well-appointed, and the bed is so comfortable you leave saying to yourself, "One of these days, I'm going to buy a bed like that."
The staff is friendly and welcoming. When the restaurant got backed up due to an unexpected crowd, we sat at the bar and ordered food. The wait staff was apologetic and the bartender gave me a nice pour of Chardonnay and refilled it - on the house. It's the small touches that make a short getaway feel special.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at the Estancia. It is a beautiful property and the service and quality of food was great. We were there for a getaway/work and found everything to be excellent. The rooms are spacious and clean and comfortable. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about the resort. I would return in a heartbeat.

So - upfront, just let me acknowledge that much of the fault with the stay was mine for picking Estancia in the first place. I had to be in La Jolla for a long weekend and was given a list of options. (I didn't do my usual Trip Advisor due diligence and just picked it based on website pictures.) What looks quaint and charming is really just a giant convention/wedding hotel catering to the university and the surrounding tech companies. The grounds, entry, lobby are truly beautiful and one of a kind - so, why the low score? Pretty much everything else.

1. The Room - extremely small. As in shockingly - not even the size of your average Holiday Inn small. (I had a deluxe king.) And nothing about it to warrant the very inflated price.

2. The bathroom - if you thought the bedroom was small... The bathroom doesn't look like it's be upgraded in years. A very shallow tub so it's kind of useless for a bath - but since it's a tub - you have to use a shower curtain to take a shower. Not my personal idea of a classy hotel. It sounds stupid - but no extras - not even a cotton ball or a q-tip. The blow dryer is outside in the closet because there isn't any space in the bathroom. No fan - so mirror fogs up instantly... You get the idea.

3. The ambience - so, those grounds I mentioned - that pretty much every room overlooks - well, guess what? They rent it out for weddings every weekend. Which means when you get back to your room and want sit out on your balcony - you can't because there's 200 hundred people below and they're BLASTING music and making announcements for several hours.

4. The Pool - small for the size of the hotel. There we about 25 kids - no chairs - and way too many people in the hot tub.

5. Noise - besides the already mentioned wedding craziness - you can literally have a whispered conversation through the hotel room door, so expect to hear EVERY person and conversation that happens anywhere in the hallways.

6. The bill. Just a personal pet peeve - it's a place that includes mandatory "resort" fees and valet fees (self-park is not an option) - which since they're mandatory, means your room is actually $50 more expensive than what you originally thought. I know a lot places do it - just think it's tacky.

So - if you're looking for a quaint, rustic lodge near the California coast - stay just about anywhere else in La Jolla. (Did I mention there are no views? It's on the main road.) If you're visiting your kids at UCSD or planning a big wedding or booking a conference - then this might be the right hotel for you. Just know what you're getting.

Perfect location and beautiful architecture are all that remain of a once very special property. Rooms remain shabby despite a recent "remodel" with stained carpeting and tired wood tables that were terribly scratched and well past their prime. Can't forget the lampshade that had a large burn mark on it. Pool area is merely okay with poolside food and bar service abysmal. Good luck hunting down a server and once you do, be patient - simple drinks took 35 minutes to arrive after making two follow-up inquiries. Staff throughout the property was indifferent during our stay. Perhaps most heartbreaking is the condition of the once very unique and gorgeous grounds. What was once lush and overflowing with unique succulents and blooming flowers is now represented by dying specimens, flower beds that were sparsely planted and a look that you would find at a Hilton - not the Estancia in its prime several years ago.

The property is clearly suffering from an identity crisis - once charming Spanish colonial furnishings and accents matching the splendid architecture have been replaced with a crazy quilt of new pieces that scream Z Gallerie - not Southern California mission elegance. So disappointing. And jarringly schizophrenic.

Estancia has great spaces for corporate meetings and weddings. But that's it. Replacing a charming bar with wine barrel furnishings (literally) and "looting" a very special library room by replacing warm accents with cases of wine promoted by the hotel is tragic.

We had planned for many years to host the weddings of our daughters in the gardens at Estancia. But the charm, elegance and special grounds have morphed into the ordinary. Renovations have detracted from the property and it's clear new ownership is taking Estancia in a much different direction which is disappointing to long-time guests like us.

Weddings will be held elsewhere and our visits to La Jolla will be spent at other special properties.

Our son spent the last four years attending UCSD. During those years we made many trips to La Jolla, and enjoyed many visits to the Estancia Hotel. The grounds are gorgeous, the staff is professional and welcoming, and the rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. Our son attended ERC, so we were always within easy walking distance to the ERC dorms and Village housing. This was particularly handy when we attended the graduation ceremonies in June. Now that our son has graduated, I won't miss the tuition bills and long drives through LA traffic to visit him, but I will definately miss our periodic stays at the Estancia!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a courtyard view. Also, check the "specials" advertised on their website. You can find some good deals during the off-season.
