“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 30 August 2010

We stayed one night and it was a nice property, with beautiful grounds. There was nothing special about the room, except that it was very clean. Nothing special about the pool or pool area, but it was relaxing. We missed the breakfast buffet at the onsite Adobe restaurant, but had lunch there instead; limited menu, though our food was delicious and the ambiance on the balcony was lovely. Didn't try any spa services. I generally hate valet parking because I like access to my car in case I forgot something in it or I need to make a quick run out for something. But the UCSD parking was further away than I wanted to deal with, so I valet parked. Fine. I was kind of bummed that they offered $50 reservation/services discounts only AFTER we checked in (for next time) if we had booked directly on their website <http://www.estancialajolla.com/elj-direct.php>.

This is a beautiful hotel with wonderful grounds. The pool was nice and heated so we could have an evening swim each night after my conference. The hotel staff was very nice and the food we had was outstanding each day. The snacks put out during breaks was great and serving Starbucks coffee was an added bonus.

There were a few things that bothered me for the money spent on this room for a week. First, even though there was a little note on our bed saying by default our sheets were changed ever other day, I know they weren't changed the entire week I was there, because there was a tiny little mark on my sheet and pillow and some creases that were the exact same every day. Also, there was one day where they didn't clean my room at all for some reason and had to be called back at 6 pm for a "freshen up" which just meant make bed and clean towels. The grounds of the hotel are well maintained, so I scored it higher on cleanliness for that reason.

The location is very frustrating as there is NOTHING near here, so if you want to go anywhere else to eat, get coffee, snacks, etc. you are out of luck and have to take an expensive cab. Though near the beach it is a VERY difficult walk down a steep path and not very accessible.

If I wasn't there for business I probably would not pay the steep price to return, I would look for a place more central and with more consistent cleanliness in the rooms.

We stayed 5 nights at this outstanding property on our recent trip to the San Diego area. The grounds at this resort are nothing short of breathtaking. Estancia has a mission style meets The West feeling ....with arched walkways, stucco and exposed beams and heavy wood doors on pounded metal hardware. The landscaping is overflowing with cactus and succulents. The resort has a spa-like atmosphere throughout, with soothing music playing softly in common areas.

We stayed in a standard room. The beds were dressed with luxury linens and were extremely comfy. All four of us travel with individual laptops. The Internet connection was perfect the entire stay. There was a coffee set up in the room, but we enjoyed the lovely complimentary coffee set up in the wine bar. They have a television playing in this room and we kept up with news by checking in each morning. The Internet worked well in the wine bar as well. We had breakfast in the restaurant twice and the lemon yogurt and fruit was fresh and tasty. The service was excellent.

The concierge services were excellent. The recommendations and information that I received made all the difference in our vacation. Even the valet staff was helpful, full of accurate advice and directions. We had the valet services included in our package, so the surcharge was not an issue for us.

We thought that the location of this property was perfect. We were never farther than a 20 minute drive to any point of interest in San Diego and yet was peaceful and secluded.

We used the fitness facilities on several mornings. It was clean and more than adequately appointed with fresh towels and spring water. The pool area was immaculate. We did not swim during our stay because it was somewhat chilly for our visit. We did, however visit the hot tub twice. Nice to have that after a long day of touring. The pool area has several cabanas equipped with mini refrigerators.

We ate at Mustangs twice for dinner. The menu changes between weekend and weekdays. On the weekdays, they add a page of lighter fare to make up for the fact that the food service at the pool isn't offered at night. Everything that we ate was excellent. The food is upscale ranch-South of the Border taste. I especially remember the spicy macaroni and cheese! Very spicy. Yum.

Estancia is peaceful, elegant, pristinely cared for and expertly managed. The weekends are considerably busier with weddings and increased bookings, but it never felt crowded. The extra activities gave the resort a upbeat feeling.... Don't hesitate...stay here. Estancia will not disappoint you.

Yikes, the majority of the staff really give off a vibe that they don't care if you enjoy your stay. We are heading back to the area next month but are not returning to this hotel.

It was noisy. We could hear the peoples conversations and the TV in the room next to us. We stayed for 6 days and 2 of those days we arrived home to our room and it hadn't been cleaned and restocked. All mornings we were woken up by the cleaning staff, vaccuming the hall ways.

I have stayed in many hotels, at varying price points, and this one is definately not worth it. There are also a lot of extra charges that you don't expect. You also need a vehicle to stay there, and then have to use the valet service that was $25 a day, plus tipping the guys each time.

It was an expensive stay, for not being relaxing. The website is misleading.

The grounds were lovely, but that is really it. We loved San Diego so will just find somewhere else to stay.

I should also mention that our credit card was "compromised" while we stayed there so when we got home, our credit card company's called to let us know, cancelled our cards and sent new ones, we then had to contact all the our preauths and that was a bit of a mess. We just received a letter today from Destination hotels and resorts (Estancia is one of their resorts) apologizing for the violation. Sigh!

We got this hotel through a name-your-own-price on Priceline...far under what they normally charge for a room. I travelled here with my two sisters for a girls' get-away. Having travelled to the San Diego area many times before, we were not surprised by the $25/day valet fee (which is charged by the day, not for every entry as some other reviews have noted) or the $9/day resort fee which covers all amenities including internet, which we used (some hotels charge up to $15/day just for internet, so this was quite reasonable). The room decor was rather average, but the grounds and the service more than made up for it. The grounds are lovely and, though spread out, we quickly found that if we got lost, we enjoyed everything we came across, the fountain, the gardens, the pool, and eventually found our way back to our destination after a relaxing stroll through the grounds. We visited the spa, but didn't indulge in their offerings, which were comparably priced. Mustangs and Burros had delicious food and the room service was beautifully presented, quickly delivered and delicious as well. Every person we came across from the clerk at check in to the bell boy at check out was respectful and courteous and went out of their way to help us and meet our needs. This hotel is easy to find, quietly secluded and close to the beach in La Jolla as well as attractions in San Diego (a short 20-minute drive down the freeway). It is well worth the money and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who would like a quiet, relaxing stay.
