My wife and I went to Estancia La Jolla this past weekend for my wifes birthday. The website gives the impression it is a very high end hotel and to a point it is, but it has some crucial flaws that a high end resort should not have.

Location was wonderful. The grounds were spectacular. The outdoor bar area is lovely. The rooms are well below par.

When I booked I mentioned it was my wifes birthday and asked for a nice room. When we checked in the guy on reception made a point of saying we were being given a 'double upgrade' We got to our room and it was very disappointing. Very very average room with poor amenities. Ancient 27inch Philips TV. No minibar. Only 3 pillows on a King Sized bed with no spare pillows in the closet. Very small coffee maker. It was just very disappointing for what otherwise is a very very nice hotel.

I went to the front desk the next morning to ask about the double upgrade and was told that the room we had was one of the best 'standard' rooms on site as it had a patio. The patio was basically a single chair outside the door that was literally 6 feet away from the single chair on the 'patio' of the room next door.

One other thing I would note, is that the pool area is full of screaming kids. If you want a nice relaxing high end vacation then maybe this is not the place for you. If you want to share the pool with screaming kids and 'priviledged parents' who don't care one iota about other people just so long as their kids are having fun, then maybe it is.

Such a shame because everything else about the hotel is fantastic.

My husband took me here as a relaxing getaway for my birthday weekend. The grounds are lush and beautiful but the rooms leave a lot to be desired. We were told that we were getting a "free double upgrade". I have no idea what the regular room would have been like. We were on the ground floor in a corner and sharing an entranceway with another room so we had to keep the curtains drawn the entire time we were in the room or else people would be walking by our window. There was a chair outside but my suggestion to anyone thinking of staying here is to request a room that is not on the bottom floor- everyone will be walking by in the morning, housekeeping rolls their carts by on the stone walkways and then leave the carts right outside the window of your room. We asked the front desk if we could be moved but they said there was nothing they could do. The room itself would be nice for a hotel that does not call itself a spa-- perhaps a basic room in another hotel. The rug was stained, furniture dated, TV was a 32 inch RCA that was probably 10+ years old. The bathroom was basic and there was no chance of taking a bath in that tub. I don't think this hotel should market themselves as a luxury resort until they update the rooms.
As I've said, the grounds and pool and facitlities are gorgeous. Mustangs bar has got great food and a beautiful outdoor bar with a fireplace. The pool is big and there is a hot tub- while we were there the whole pool was full of screaming kids the entire time. I mean a full day Marco Polo screaming match. While this is not the hotel's fault of course, be aware that it is a very kid friendly hotel, if you are going there for peace and quiet. Do go to Torrey Pines beach which is a ten minute drive-- it's well worth it and a good escape if the pool is really loud.
You need to have a car rental to stay here--it is walking distance to nothing and in the middle of the Univerity of California campus. The cost to park per day is $25 plus it is forced valet, which we didn't like. If you plan on going out several times a day, tipping and waiting for your car each time can get annoying.
Overall we had a good time here but wouldn't go back.

This hacienda themed hotel property is beautiful and relaxing. Desert plants from around the globe lay beside hotel sidewalks. The hotel layout provides a surprising amount of privacy considering the quantity of rooms. The restaurants, bars, and valet service are all fantastic.
The main drawback to the Estancia is the outdated rooms. A huge armoire takes away a large amount of otherwise useful space from the small hotel room. In it is a large tube television and mini refrigerator. There is room in the fridge to put your things. The room telephones are old plastic 1980's model. The room décor is just as old. It is sad how poor and cheap the hotel was with their room furniture. The rooms need to be freshened up. And yet, the sleep quality of the mattress and the room’s cleanliness were very good.
Bottom line, the hotel needs to update its rooms in order to justify their rates.

We spent 8 days at this resort and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is friendly and respectful. After an extensive internet search for a hotel in La Jolla, we are extremely happy with our choice.

We spent a night at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel.
At our arrival time 4pm, the room was not yet ready and we had to wait without any offer for another room, an upgrade or at least something to drink.

The room was clean with a nice view into the garden area.
But the minibar was empty and not even a bottle of water was awaiting thirsty guests. The whole hotel building is a maze without any proper designation.
At the reception when checking out and asking why the minibar was empty and no drinking water was provided, the staff member responded very impolite that guests would need to ask for (although we were not informed so when we checked in) and she did not provide the first hint of a friendly advance.

The whole experience at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa was a huge disappointment and once again showed nicely that more expensive hotels with seemingly more stars (4) not per se provide a higher quality stay. The next night at the Holiday Inn in Mission Bay, a 3 star hotel, did not just provide a much bigger room for less money, but bottles of water and even a snack.

The grounds are beautiful. The place has a very relaxing feel. We had breakfast at a place that overlooked the beautiful courtyard. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. We would definitely stay again.

Travelling the world and staying in several countries in Europe, Africa and North America in upper class hotels, this was certainly one of the most disappointed experiences I had.

First the good part:
- Room was clean with a nice bathroom
- The grounds are very nice with beautiful gardens

Bad parts
- We arrived after 4pm and our room was not ready
- Staff was not able to offer us an upgrade, drinks or something because the room not ready!
- Staff was very reserved and not really helpful (Except Valet guys - understandable for 25USD per night!)
- The room was very small (2 queens)
- There was not even a bottle water provided in the room, don 't even think there is something like a minibar...
- The last (restaurant/)bar on premise closes at 10.30pm (!)
- some furniture were in bad shape (TV furniture/cupboard)
tbc

the night after that we were staying in mid class hotel chain, where it was less than half the price and at least 4 times the comfort. I cannot recommend his hotel.
