Stayed here one night this week. Found it on HotelTonight for a very reasonable amount, most of San Diego was sold out by this time.
This fit the bill for a quick nights sleep. Not a great hotel, but adequate, and they had clean sheets & towels. I did peek behind the headboard and wish I hadn't, but I still slept pretty well. I opened the windows and a cool light night breeze blew in, that was my favorite part. The free breakfast is set up on the 2nd floor in a typical room that is transformed into a tight table and chair course that everyone politely passes thru. Many Europeans, the younger set, probably because it is quite inexpensive and well located in the pretty little town of La Jolla.
But don't look up when you walk in your door as you are under the very old air intake for your airco, its very dirty and should be updated. Not a nice welcoming. The night attendant was very nice, the lobby is small but accommodating and nicely appointed for the price point. This hotel would be between a 2 and 3 rating at best. Fits the bill for a budget way to see a very pricey town.

This is a very nice little hotel with excellent staff and service, and a great restaurant. It's location is also very good, right in the heart of La Jolla in walking distance to beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants. Also there are two great museums really close. The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the small but fabulous Map Museum of La Jolla.

Room Tip: No swimming pool or jacuzzi.....but ocean views from the top floors in quite a few rooms!

Stayed two nights in June. Reception/valet was friendly and efficient with a hello every time we walked through the lobby. Terrific location; left the car with the hotel and didn't use it for the time there. Close to the beach, shopping, museums, restaurants, etc. Room was clean and spacious. The breakfast buffet was nice, though it could have used some fresh cut fruit. Didn't eat in the restaurant, but the smells emanating from the restaurant into the lobby were wonderful. One superb feature; the shower stall had the shower head at one end and the tap at the other, no turning on the water and freezing until the hot water got through the pipes. No view of the ocean, but no ocean view price. If I should be in La Jolla and need a hotel, this is the place that I will stay.

This hotel is just perfection. The room was beautiful, clean and spacious. What the room lacked in a view, the hotel makes up for in its location. It is so central to the main shopping and restaurant area in Lo Jolla, that we did not need to use a car to avail ourselves of the experience. That meant we could both enjoy cocktails with no worries about driving back to our hotel. Yet the hotel is quiet and restful. The staff is prompt, professional, friendly and helpful. The decor is stunning, from the lobby to the hallways and rooms. And the entire place is spotless and gleaming clean. There was nothing we did not love.

Room Tip: We had a King Deluxe room and loved it

I spent 5 nights here during June and enjoyed the experience. The reception was friendly, and fast and I was on my way to my room (509) in moments. We arrived about 7PM and just needed a beer and light bite after a long, long day of travel. The restaurant is mood lit, the bar man is friendly, beer cold and light bites tasty and not to expensive (they were also half price between 4 and 6). My room was clean and well appointed with so many pillows! The hall way and bathroom have it active lighting in that you switch it on but if there s no movement after a minute or two it switches itself off (letting you get back to bed after a midnight trip!). Breakfast is cold continental and served in a room on the second floor. It is boiled eggs, cold meal, bread, waffles and Danish. Enough to start the day. The gym is not of much use just a couple of machines. Did I have a good time? Yes. Would I stay again? Yes.

Room Tip: Park on the street no need to use hotel and pay for it.

We have stayed here a number of times over the past ten years and have found it a good value for its location. Not as "glossy" as some higher priced nearby hotels, its pricing fairly reflected that. Staff has always been friendly and responsive; rooms (the "deluxe" category) are spacious and comfortable; continental breakfast satisfactory.

For some time now, the hotel has been planning a redecorating/refurbishing, even posting a display of the new furnishing designs. We were disappointed to hear that once again this has been delayed--we were told it will begin in October. Maybe the delay is related to the recent ownership change. It is needed soon if The Empress is to maintain its market position.

We rented 5 rooms with guests staying 1-4 nights. It is an older hotel but well maintained and quite comfortable. It is well located and employees a very helpful staff. The restaurant was a nice plus. We would all stay there again.
