“Very nice hotel, but...”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

My friends and I enjoyed everything about our stay except when my phone was stolen while checking in the night desk staff were not at all helpful. I showed them on my iPad iPhone Finder that the phone was located in their hotel and they did nothing. The next morning my finder showed the phone landing on Anza Drive in San Diego. I asked for the manager who gave me a hotel incident report to fill out (why wasn't that given the night before) and said he would check into the situation and get back to me WHICH HE NEVER did. I didn't expect the staff to knock on doors but their blasé attitude was unacceptable.

This hotel had many excellent points. One, it has a great location in La Jolla with restaurants, shops and the beach in walking distance. The valet parking was fast. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly.

However, the rooms are looking quite worn and dated. The property does not have a pool. The breakfast was just so-so, and the breakfast room attendant was not particularly friendly.

All staff was great, from the valet to maid to the breakfast host. We stayed in a 2 queen bed room with our teenagers. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable. We loved the large walk in shower. I was extremely happy with the breakfast choices and patio breakfast area. The room could be a little more accommodating for technology. It was hard to find outlets to charge our various devices. I would definitely stay here again.

Location is excellent for a time of relaxation. You can walk or drive to many locations in the town of La Jolla. Quite time for your enjoyment of the area. I will tell all my friends, when in the area too stay at this hotel. For years my family and other friends have been enjoying the greatly held secret of privacy.

We recently had a mini family reunion in La Jolla, California and stayed at the Empress Hotel on Fay Avenue. It is a charming little hotel just a couple of short blocks off Prospect and Girard. It is walking distance from many good restaurants as well as walking distance from La Jolla Cove.

A curious situation arose when we discovered that the staff had assigned five of the six couples rooms directly across from the elevator. All but one couple requested different rooms due to the potential noise of people coming and going day and night. At these requests the staff immediately accommodated each couple.

We stayed in the King Deluxe room and were quite pleased with the spaciousness of the room which came with a love seat, a small table and two chairs, a large flat screen TV, and an easy-to-operate safe. The refrigerator was one of the smallest we have ever encountered in our travels. Our room had large bay windows that opened and let in the cool ocean breeze. We did not have a great view, but we could see a little bit of the ocean from the bay windows. The bathroom was very modern and appropriately stocked with all the expected amenities.

The Empress Hotel offered a complimentary continental breakfast which seemed a bit on the lean side to us so we walked one minute down Fay Avenue and went to the Cottage for breakfast. It is well worth it if you want the best breakfast in La Jolla.

I would recommend this hotel for your stay in La Jolla but be prepared for some of the limitations that are present when staying at a small hotel. We thought the $18/day price tag for parking was a little steep but parking is at a premium in La Jolla. There is no swimming pool at this hotel.

Stayed here one night this week. Found it on HotelTonight for a very reasonable amount, most of San Diego was sold out by this time.
This fit the bill for a quick nights sleep. Not a great hotel, but adequate, and they had clean sheets & towels. I did peek behind the headboard and wish I hadn't, but I still slept pretty well. I opened the windows and a cool light night breeze blew in, that was my favorite part. The free breakfast is set up on the 2nd floor in a typical room that is transformed into a tight table and chair course that everyone politely passes thru. Many Europeans, the younger set, probably because it is quite inexpensive and well located in the pretty little town of La Jolla.
But don't look up when you walk in your door as you are under the very old air intake for your airco, its very dirty and should be updated. Not a nice welcoming. The night attendant was very nice, the lobby is small but accommodating and nicely appointed for the price point. This hotel would be between a 2 and 3 rating at best. Fits the bill for a budget way to see a very pricey town.

This is a very nice little hotel with excellent staff and service, and a great restaurant. It's location is also very good, right in the heart of La Jolla in walking distance to beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants. Also there are two great museums really close. The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the small but fabulous Map Museum of La Jolla.

Room Tip: No swimming pool or jacuzzi.....but ocean views from the top floors in quite a few rooms!
