Just returned from a great week in San Diego but this Inn was just average, definitely not customer focused and over-promises on the accommodations. If you get in the main lodge you are fine, but most rooms are in the second building with zero view except for the courtyard that is way overgrown and you cannot even see beyond huge trees, even on the fifth floor though they promised when I made the reservation that it would be a courtyard view. You literally see nothing but a massive tree, you cannot even see the other rooms let alone the courtyard where it needs gardening within the courtyard property. When I complained they said they checked and this was the best view that was available. I asked to complain to the manager and the front desk said they would pass along my message but never apologized nor did we get a call. Even upon leaving, No One at the front desk ever bothered to ask how my stay was so I could explain again, a but shocked they never asked or said thank you for staying. The place seems to need updating from a customer service perspective beyond the concierge and the spa. It is eerily quiet as compared to the local places. It may be a great golf vacation but not worth the high rating nor worth returning. We had great breakfasts and late night desserts at the Hilton Torrey pines in front of their outdoor fireplaces. The Hilton which borders the Inn and has lots of activity and great service, and yes views of the beautiful ocean vs the pine tree by our terrace.

We just went to The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines for a birthday brunch. It was chosen because we wanted to see and enjoy the Green & Green architectural design in the arts & crafts style. Spectacular! If you're a fan of the craftsman/arts & crafts style, this place will not disapoint. The front doors alone with their exquisite glasswork are worth the visit. The Lodge is situated next to a PGA golf course, with the ocean beyond. At The Grill we sat on the ground level patio overlooking the view of the golf course and ocean - it was lovely and peaceful. Now for the food - everyone was very happy with their meals, service was very cordial and attentive, and they prepared a special birthday dessert with "Happy Birthday" drizzled in chocolate. We stayed for hours just enjoying the view and fine weather. Can't comment on the hotel, but the front desk staff were very helpful in guiding us to The Grill. This is a unique property and well worth a visit.

My wife and I, along with our 24 year old daughter, spent 4 beautiful days at the end of May at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla. I would definitely request an ocean view, which we had requested but they were unable to offer when we checked in due to presumably unforeseen circumstances---the raging wild fires had caused many evicted families to seek refuge at The Lodge. If we had an ocean view, I likely would have given it a 5 star review. The concierge was absolutely fantastic with respect to dinner reservations and all of the recommendations were perfect. Golfers, make sure you contact the course well in advance; south course is the course they use during the pro tournaments, but the north course is also great.

Room Tip: Request an ocean view! All rooms are nice and most have balconies, but the ocean views are wonderfu...

Very nice one night stay at The Lodge...comfortable and very friendly staff. Wonderful quiet walk upon arrival. The interior decor is lovely -- cocktails in the Grill & Bar were delicious which was followed by a quiet and beautiful dinner. The service was impeccable. Our room was very spacious and clean -

From the change in tone from when you pull up to check in and tell them you are self parking (even self park) to the matter of fact check in - which is pleasant enough without making you feel welcome or that this place is anywhere great - the ;just OK' feeling is already strong.
The decor is odd and the corridors to the rooms, as someone else has previously described - could be from a mid 1990's Best Western.
the pool is small and has very few loungers although the service at the pool seemed very good (even though they add 15% service charge to anything served at the pool for some reason).
having a room you pretty much go through the car park to get to is also not great - despite hearing of this before I rang reservations and they assured me there was really only one building and everything is in the main building (this was obviously a bit of a lie).
the room size is fine - 4 of us (2 adults 2 kids) but again the decor is odd - I know its the style they chose but feels very dated.
limited eating options or many places for drinks.
the area is nice and La Jolla is lovely (but most places you need a car).

Also the wifi - although free is some outdated sign in with a code every day/randomly, which is a bit annoying! and it is extremely slow.

all in all it is 'OK' I am not sure what warrants 5 star rating about this place and the room rates they charge.

i know many love it so I guess its just a matter of taste!

We loved the location, the Artisan Table for dinner, and the room. It would have got a better rating if the service at the Grill & Bar had been better.

I'm not a golfer, but I understand the golf courses are incredible.

We are not golfers (and people who golf will probably have to be evicted in order to leave), but that made no difference to us. The accommodations are very comfortable and pleasant. Staff are as courteous and friendly as could be; the concierge staff were particularly helpful and patient. The nearby hiking in Torrey Pines Preserve is a real plus. There a nice sized-pool and jacuzzi; the fitness room was well-equipped; the craftsman style throughout was tasteful and reminiscent of the best in Pasadena; the business center was convenient with updated equipment. The Torrey Pines area is great location for quiet relaxation; we have been to La Valencia in the heart of La Jolla and if you want night life that might be for you. Come here to get away from that.
