My wife and I have been staying here yearly for the last 7 years. We usually stay 1 to 2 weeks at a time and have stayed about 75 nights in total.
This will most likely be the last time we stay at the La Jolla Residence Inn. I will list below what we think the positives and negatives are.
Positives: Location, close to the beaches, San Diego, University, attractions and easy access to the I-5. Also an easy walk to Whole Foods and some restaurants.
The rooms are very clean with nice updated linens, firm comfortable beds and modern clean kitchens. The bathrooms are clean modern and adequate although small.
The maids and room staff are very friendly.
Negatives: No longer customer friendly. They advertise free high speed Internet, don't believe what you read. If you need to be online, this is not the place for you. Although they do have wi- fi and Ethernet, you will be very frustrated if you are able to use either. The wi-fi drops the signal every time I have tried to use it and the Ethernet is intermittent. When you are able to use it, it is slower than dial up.
There is now a newly introduced 12 dollar a night parking fee, that you are not aware of until you register. This was an extra 200 dollar hit for us on this trip.
The rooms have very poor sound insulation, do not stay on a lower floor, if you do bring ear plugs.
The grounds are becoming quite run down, with pipes sticking out of the ground. The roadways and parking lots are in dire need of sweeping and cleaning.
The breakfasts are good and appreciated, but truly is a feeding frenzy at a pig troff.
Overall, I would say, Greedy owner syndrome. Occupancy is not a problem here. The owner is bringing in up to 50k a month with the new parking policy, but can't spend a few bucks to give more signal on the Internet or do required maintenance on the grounds. Polite complaints go on deaf ears.
