“Great outdoor exercise”

Lafayette Reservoir

Pros: you can work out with a friend and enjoy the views. You can go up the upper loop and do a serious work out or you can stay in the lower one for a more gentle one.
Cons: The parking was a problem a while ago when there wasn't enough for the hourly parking. Now, with the upgraded parking you have more chances of parking, but good luck with the meters. They don't always work, and the price has increased quite a bit.

We took the walk up and around the hills of the reservoir, which was tough going at times, as in some places it was quite steep and loose dirt caused me to slip and feel unsteady on my feet. I would go again, but wear more sturdy walking boots.

This is a nice easy walk that can be completed in less than an hour. Parking can be a challenge. Spaces may be available in the all day lot which is $7.00 - much more economical to use the metered parking - unless you are going to be there for several hours. So get there early - and at weekends I mean early!

If you're not an athlete, but need a good three-mile walk that begins and ends where you parked, you just can't beat the Lafayette reservoir. Like much of Lafayette, the reservoir is a place people come to from miles around and from other towns. (Lafayette has the most mod library for a town of its size, and many people in Contra Costa come to use ours instead of their.) Anyway, you won't find more beauty for less effort. Note: It's not a walk for folks who are in a lot of pain as once you get a mile or so in, you pretty much have to go all the way; so make sure you're up for it. But that being said, the pathway is wide, paved, has very few hills, is mostly flat; and it also is used by runners and other more ardent athletes. And, frankly, spiritual people come there for inspiration. The trees, the hills, the birds, the water, the beautiful people — you can't beat this. (I believe there is a parking fee, but I don't think it's too much.) It's the best almost-free show in the county.

It is a very beautiful lakeside and wooded environment.

It can be windy and chilly in evening or during the winter. However, it is almost always sunny and warmer during the day but can be sometimes hot in the summer.

It is generally warmer than San Francisco's often chilly summers, but not foggy in Lafayette even in non-drought summers. Like San Francisco, it has typically perfect weather in the fall months.
