“Old school charm”
Reviewed 8 January 2014 via mobile

Hotel Laguna is sort of like stepping back in time, old school charm, like the fact that your room key is actually a key, not an electronic card key....
nothing fancy, but nice and clean and has beautiful views of the Pacific, and a super friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately our room overlooked the main street so it was really loud at night, so be sure and request a room on the ocean side.

We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It is adorable and the staff was so very kind and accommodating. It is an old hotel, so expectations should consider that fact. The rooms are small. The elevator is small. The windows are old, so you can hear the ocean waves. We loved that fact. The wall heater didn't work, but they brought us another heater. The fan didn't work, but they were working on a water problem. ALL of these things did not detract from how wonderful this gem is. The waitress Gina was amazing. She made us feel so at home and valued. The front desk folks were so kind.

It is right on the beach and offers towels and chairs. They were so unexpectedly busy that they didn't have an attendant available. They were not ready for 80 degrees and so many beach go-fers. But again, they were kind and caring about the situation.

And the city of Laguna Beach is quaint and historic also. So many fun shops, galleries and restaurants.

We loved this community and the people there, too. We saw more dogs here than anywhere we've been before.

Room Tip: Our room was 160 a night through Expedia and was a partial view room. We had a most beautiful view o...

And that's not a good thing. FANTASTIC location. OUTSTANDING views! My room , #125, was on PCH (the highway) and since the windows are very old (like everything the room - it's all original!) it was very loud hearing people walking outside and laughing, and cars zooming by all night.

If you plan on plugging in your computer/cell phone/iPad etc., be forewarned you will only have 1 outlet unless you decide to unplug the TV.

PROS: The staff was great, my room was clean. The price was excellent. The was the smallest I've ever seen, the bed was the most basic (not even a headboard) and the heater I will never stay here again.

This is an older, quirky hotel right on its private beach in Laguna. No clock in my room, but the basics were there. As this was a winter visit, I would have liked a better heating system. Good restaurant/bar on premises. And the price (off-season) was incredible.

Room Tip: I chose a room on the courtyard/ocean side as I was advised that the village side (off PCH) is very...

Stayed overnight, enjoyed beachfront access and drinks and dinner at restaurant overlooking the beach. Room was clean, a bit outdated with a small bathroom and thin walls. Not luxurious accommodations, but very comfortable. Location was as perfect as you can get! Wedding party next door came back at 2:00 am to party, but after we contacted the front desk, they took care of it for us. The beach club chair service could stop later and start earlier so we could enjoy the beach longer. Can't wait to return!

My husband and I met over 30 years ago at the Renaissance Bakery on Forest Avenue (now a very good Italian restaurant) in Laguna Beach. Given that our anniversary is coming up and we were going to be in Orange County for three nights anyway, we decided to stay at Hotel Laguna, asking for a corner room that has one window facing Main Beach and the other window facing the ocean. The location could not be better. The first night we were assigned a room next to/behind a corner room so that we had just a view of Main Beach, not really so bad. But what wasn't great was that the toilet bowl had black stains. The second and third nights we were moved to the corner room next to where we were the night before. Great views, cleaner looking toilet bowl, but one of the windows facing Main Beach was broken, secured with black electrical tape. Our last morning in Laguna, we had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which was very good. I heard one of the employees say something about "renovating the hotel." If that's true, they have a ways to go.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room

If you love all the modern amenities and luxury bathrooms, this is probably not the place for you to stay. However, if you like a classic old hotel, it is great. And remember, you are not here to lounge about your room. It is all about the Beach and the ocean just steps out the door. Was there for my daughters wedding and we had a large number of rooms. They were clean and the beds were comfortable.

The restaurant and bar were spectacular. Good food and incredible service; and the only beach in the area where you can order drinks on the beach.

Great wedding venue.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room, or a garden and ocean view room.
