“We stayed at this hotel as a last minute...”
Reviewed 26 September 2010

We stayed at this hotel as a last minute stop on our honeymoon, we checked the guide book and just turned up. The valet was lovely, and helpful and the receptionist lovely. We were lucky and had an upgraded room - honeymoon perk - with a view of the sea. The room was simple and a bit tired (as is the hotel as a whole) but very clean and comfy. The small private beach is a great perk, safety for your things whilst swimming and a comfy lounged with towels - great if you are travelling! Yes breakfast was in a former bedroom but the coffee was hot and pastries tasty, just take it back to your room! Also, they do have free wifi.
In short a simple hotel that is relatively cheap when compared to the rest of Laguna Beach.

We had room 203, perfect ocean view! The room was small, but clean. The windows could use some updating. The free breakfast in the morning wasn't much, but hey, it's free!! The location is great!!

The ultimate in a charming historic hotel in Laguna Beach. You are smack in the middle of downtown Laguna Beach and the location really couldn't be better from that standpoint. Great restaurant and location but rooms could use some updating.

I guess this is only a half review...because we literally walked into our room and walked right out. Yes, it was that bad that on Labor Day weekend we were willing to take the risk to be able to find another place to stay. It was rundown, dirty, and before we even got into our door, we were subjected to the sounds of our accross the hall neighbors "spending some quality time together". We checked out immediately and got our car from the valet...none of the staff seemed surprised to see us go. We got on the phone with the travel agent and were able to get into the Marriott at Dana Point (was nt in the mood to take another risk), which was fabulous. I can't speak to the food because I would have never eaten there. That bad.

I stayed at the Hotel Laguna with my girlfriends in August for a girls trip! As we first walked into the hotel lobby we were amazed at the beautiful upgrades that they have done in the lobby! We were then checked in by a very sweet young man who made sure to inform us of the local events and attractions going on in Laguna as it was the last main weekend in town. We were also suprised when we were informed that there was a complimentary wine and cheese held in the lounge that afternoon for guests, we thought this was a great touch.
We got up to our room which overlooked the main beach park with a great ocean view...Wasnt an ocean front but was just enough of an ocean view along with a beautiful view of the main beach. Our room was a bit smaller in size but perfect for our "European Inspired " beach getaway. Most impressive was how the hotel has managed to keep its historical features when its from the 1920s! As impressed as I was at this time, it did not compare to my reaction when I found myself in the lobby staring though the glass doors of their ocean front restaurant "Claes", I immediatly made the decision to have our celebration dinner there. We then made our way to the lounge to seek the location of the wine and cheese and found ourselves in a cozy, firendly atmosphere to relax that evening. As this didnt make our decision for us already, the friendly young man behind the bar informed us that there was complimentary live entertainment the following evening in the lounge! This rolled in perfectly with our dinner plans to follow with the lounge! We then made our way to the Terrace Cafe located outside next to Claes. What a beautiful daytime view! Wonderful to enjoy a cocktail with friends! As we were enjoying our Mai Thai's watching the dolphin catch some waves infront of us, our server mentioned that we should be down on the beach enjoying our cocktails on the sand! We can do that? Yes! We were all able to lay on the beach where they provided us with the towels, lounge chairs and an unbrealla! This truely made our stay that much better! All and all, the stay was just absolutly wonderful! We felt like part of the hotel laguna family by the time we left! Despite the previous comments about the cleanliness of this hotel and service, I would say STAYING AT THE HOTEL LAGUNA IS A MUST when visiting Laguna Beach! This historical hotel not only hold wonderful accomidations and dining, but it offers friendly, caring customer service from all departments. I suggest this hotel to anyone looking for an amazing "home away from home" vacation.

Hotel needs some work. No air in room, $50 dollar room in a $200+ dollar location. Walk to everything. I would rcommend this hotel on location alone, mqkes up for room.

Don't stay here!!!
After reading previous bad reports on this site, we gave the hotel a try as it was suggested that the problems were with the cheaper rooms only.

WRONG!!

We stayed in a beach front room at top rates (extortionate).
The worst hotel stay in our regular travels over thelast 30 years.
Matchbox room. When we tried to open the TV cabinet, we had to rearrange the little furniture that there was in the room. Our beach view was obstructed by an old rusty fire escape ladder. The breakfast was in an small ex bedroom with about 7 or 8 chairs with 3 small round tables. A help yourself to serials and buns event, that most had to eat while standing or go back to their room.
The hotel bar shut at 21:00!!! (staff said it was hotel policy) The staff were very good despite their dissatisfaction/embarrassment working there.
The management did not respond to our complaints.
Generally the rooms are run down as well as very small, they need investment badly, it stll has a 1930's look. Don't make the same mistake as many!!! We made a very expensive error.
