Description: In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.

We ate lunch at Lumberyard twice during our stay in the area.

On each occasion we ordered from the $10 lunch menu. There were lots of choices including sandwiches, a burger, and salads. We were all pleased with the food which included fish and chips, burgers, a pulled pork sandwich and two salads. Overall, we considered these items to be well prepared and presented and very good value.

The service on both occasions was friendly and efficient.

On our first visit we ate on the patio which was small and alongside a fairly busy thoroughfare. It was out of the sun and although the weather was fine, it was a little cool. The second time we ate indoors. We did find it a little dark, but not unpleasant.

Overall, a pleasant lunch. We'll return to Lumberyard again if we're in the area.

We ate here Saturday, Jan 4. We made 6 pm reservations. This restaurant/bar is very loud which was exacerbated by a fussy baby at a nearby table. The food and service are excellent. Our water glasses were kept filled and Chad, our waiter checked on us periodically during the meal. The meatloaf wrapped in bacon was $17 and fantastic, the Lumberyard Burger was $16. A Guiness was $7 and generous glass of Viognier wine was $11. Except for the noise level and the crying baby the meal was enjoyable.

First time I went to this restaurant for dinner and I liked it. I returned a second time but for lunch and was not as pleased. The corn bread skillet is excellent. I would go back just for that! I ordered fish and chips for lunch and it was very greasy. My husband ordered a soup and sandwich combo which was very small and not too appealing. The service was good both times. The restaurant is very dark inside but they do offer a small patio for outdoor dining.

Located at the end of the downtown area, great place for a casual dinner after a day in Laguna. Food is good, service friendly and prices reasonable.

Lumberyard may not have the absolute best food in town or the most creative menu, but sometimes it is the perfect choice. The food and atmosphere are very comforting, non-trendy and kid friendly. Lumberyard has a nice lively atmosphere, but it doesn't get deafeningly loud when crowded, this being an issue that makes some of the other restaurants in town almost unbearable. Another plus is that there are often tables available when many of the surrounding restaurants are full. That is not due to a lack of popularity as much as the relatively vast amount of seating. The menu is expansive, with enough vegetarian options to make non-meat eaters happy.
