I first learned about Maro from the appetizers they served at the Green Feast fundraiser for The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano. Giving back to the community pays because that motivated me to have lunch at their restaurant in Laguna Beach recently. It was a rainy day and the umbrellas on the patio need to be adjusted to make sure no one gets a lap full of rainwater when the breeze blows, but that was only a minor distraction as we moved inside for our coffee after the meal. Oh yeah, the meal.

Started with Caprese Empanadas and Spicy Chicken Empanadas. Baked, not fried. Now I can't remember a fried food that I didn't like, but baking these little bread pockets with tasty filling worked just fine. The burgers were cooked just as requested and the patties were very flavorful. Toppings were tasty too. Cole slaw served on the side had a nice bite to it and complemented the drippy burgers just fine. The bread pudding for dessert was the star of the show. Floating in a vanilla flavored cream, both texture and taste were very pleasing. I'll be back! After all, they even have a small parking lot.

Chose this place based on Yelp stars - mistake #1. Entrees are so unimaginative so we opted for salads with protein. Basically field greens plus fennel (big whoop) in such a lousy vinegarette we has to ask for extra balsamic. The empanadas people rave about were nice but got progressively smaller (why? See photo - not an optical illusion). Wait staff very snobby. In short I'd recommend eating anywhere else.

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge - we found it mediocre. Poor service - I was still eating my main course when the waiter (the guy with the small pony-tail!) asked if we wanted desert! When we asked what was available he said there was only 1 desert left. We then declined and the waiter immediately produced the bill from his back pocket -he was clearly looking to exit us! We then saw him chatting to some friends who had just arrived and were looking for a table....

We decided to order desert (just to annoy him!) - he told us there was only 1 item left on the desert menu - we checked with another waiter who told us there were other deserts (which we promptly ordered. Quite outrageous behaviour.

Don't visit.

Sitting on the patio on a warm summers evening is usually enough to make me happy.... But add the amazing food at Maro Wood Grill and the great service and you just can't go wrong. Guests at neighboring tables talking with each other added to a very sociable evening. The place is small so don't expect to get seated without a reservation but its worth it.

This small, quaint Laguna Beach restaurant on PCH is delightful, quieter evening with friends. They offer a wonderful wine selection. Both times we've been there, the owner, a young handsome guy and the chef, a pretty, charming "California-Girl type" have greeted us. The service is excellent and the waiters are clearly well trained and knowledgable.

We enjoyed it so much, we returned for a "watch the chef" prepare night with wine pairings from New Zealand. The portions are generous and excellent quality (so not frufru for those who like to feel satisfied, like my husband). They have excellent lamb, salmon and pork dishes plus terrific desserts and coffee. The halibut was OK, a bit dry. It's on PCH, no view of ocean with indoor bar-top seating and outdoor table seating. Prices are comparable to other local restaurants. Also a great place to share a few different types of entrees or appetizers. While it's owned by an Argentine, the chef is not so the food isn't Latin American (based on what I selected).
