My wife and I have stayed here at least four times beginning in 2006. We keep returning because it is an excellent value, and a very relaxing place to be. We love the quaintness! It works well for us. Have never had any trouble with staff. We usually use room 306 because we love the private balcony and the wonderful surf view.

Thank you for the great endorsement. Seeing guests return year after year is the highest compliment we can earn.

Room 306 is in a great part of the building with the large rooms and private decks overlooking the beach. This February has had great weather. Im glad you were able to enjoy it while staying at the Laguna Riviera.

We look forward to your next stay.

Happy travels,

Kort

My In-Laws have been staying at the Riv for about 14 years now, wooed from another hotel farther up the PCH. My wife and I joined them in 2006 and loved it.

The first time we went it was a bit rustic. Clean and maintained, but a bit old fashioned (in a good way). The second time the rooms had a very nice remodel done to them; a bit trendy, but it worked. I especially liked the new showers.

The location is great, and the beach access very convenient. The staff is helpful and understanding, management fair and knowledgeable, not like the monsters you might read about in lesser reviews.

Choose your room to meet your needs; there are plenty to meet your needs and price.

Room Tip: Visit the Orange, about a block or two north for some awesome coffee and breakfast!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, it means a lot to us.

We are constantly looking for ways to further enhance our guests experience. For 2012 we have started our slope project and by next summer will have new pathways and terraces to the ocean, a two level surf view patio for room 101, and two ocean terrace patios and private direct beach access for the bungalow.

When the bungalows patios are re-opened, it will be an excellent venue for small weddings, family reuniouns, and parties. Even, as is, with 3 bedrooms it is perfect for a single or multi family beach vacation. Please stop by the office during your next stay, if it's not occupied, it would be my pleasure to give you a tour.

Thanks again and we look forward to your next stay with us.

Happy travels,

My husband and I first stayed at the Laguna RIviera back in 1985. Very funky place at that time..but suited our needs. Over the past few years we have stayed 3 times, Rooms 406, 511 and 101. I would recommend all of them with maybe the exception of 406. The hotel recently remodeled and room 511 was beautifully done. Room 101 was very private and was also very nice. I will be staying again in February...this time I have chosen Room 203. I am sure my stay will be just as nice. The beach is just steps away and it is a nice walk to the Main Beach shopping and restaurants. Also a plus is that the hotel does not charge parking. P.S Glad to hear the gal at the front desk is no longer there...she was a bit brusk! While I would love to stay at the Surf and Sand...for my money...Laguna Riviera is a great choice! Thanks

Room Tip: Room 511 while not ocean view - you could see it out the side window. Very nice and comfortable room

Thank you for the nice review. It is great seeing the observations of a repeat guest who has watched as we continue to improve and upgrade the property.

I would suggest that for fun, you ask to see room 406 on your next stay. It used to be, in my opinion, our least desirable room. Because of that we put a great deal of effort into upgrading it, and while not large, it is now a very nice room with more space, a beautifully upgraded bathroom, and additional amenities. If it was allowed, I'd love to include pictures within this reply.

Room 203 which you have selected for your next stay is very nice and I look forward to hearing your comments. Room 101 that you mentioned will be down for a while as we add a new retaining wall and a terraced front patio that will offer one of the best surf views on the property.

While I agree that the Surf & Sand is very nice property. I enjoy dining at their excellent restaurant Splashes regularly. The Riviera sits on an arguably better beach, our rates are about 1/2 of what you will pay for a king room with a surf view, and we have no added fees for parking, internet, etc.

Thanks again for the review and please feel free to introduce yourself and say hello on your next visit.

Happy travels,

This interesting property sits overlooking a beautiful sand beach and has tremendous ocean views. A pleasant zigzag garden path leads right to the beach.

That's why you would stay here. Our room inside (#508) was nothing special - a large room with a foldout bed and sofabed; noisy heater-air conditioner; fireplace did not seem to work; fairly standard furniture although the sofa was very comfortable. Good bath facilities and amenities. But it has a private deck right over the ocean with a fantastic view and plastic lounge chairs.

Small garden areas on the slopes have flowers, grass and palm trees.

Outdoor hallway areas in the hotel have colorful painted murals, completing the impression of a true beach hotel.

Thank you for the nice review. The views and, of course, the town is what brings our guests to Laguna Beach and the Laguna Riviera year after year.

Your room, 508 is one of our most popular rooms for couples because of the privacy and it has, arguably, the best view on the property. The bed is a fold out, or more accurately a Murphy bed. It is like any other regular bed, except that it retracts into the wall to create more space during the day. It uses a regular queen mattress that is of the same quality as any top end hotel mattress.

This room is so popular that when we did our room upgrades it was rarely available to work on, so the upgrades were minimal. It is now scheduled for additional improvements before summer of 2012 is upon us that will bring it to the same high standard as our other newly renovated rooms. The fireplace is also scheduled for service as the electronic ignition system has been effected by the ocean air causing intermittent issues.

The Laguna Riviera was opened in 1948 and has hosted dignitaries, celebrities, and families from around the world for almost 65 years while still providing the relaxed, low key, unpretentious charm one expects from a family owned classic beach property in an eclectic town like Laguna Beach, and we are glad you chose to stay with us.

Thanks again for the review and we look forward to your next stay.

Well,, the pics looked great on the website and we booked room 409 where we are staying right now. The "resort" looks like a glorified motel, renovated, but still distinctly motel ambiance. Our room overlooked a a dirty roof, complete with a dirty rag, champagne cork, broken plastic fork and a general shabbiness that completely interfered with the legitimitely lovely view of the. The "private deck" is nothing more than painted lattice that "separates" one balcony from the next, making us very vulnerable to the cell phone gabbing upper neighbor's conversation. We asked to see another room which had no private deck, and was so close to a communal deck that any noisy neighbor or late night revelers would have truly created a sleepless night. The carpeting between rooms on the outside of the room was shabby and a tripping hazard. The young male staff was aloof and unconcerned but gave us a whopping 10

Thank you for the high points on our amazing location, and sorry the young man at the front desk did not live up to your expectations. We strive for a very high level of customer services and while we receive many compliments on his performance your experience will be discussed with him to make sure everyone receives the same high level of attention.

It is unfortunate that your view was disturbed by wind swept debris. Unfortunately we find it necessary to clean the lower roofs from time to time to clear the stray champagne cork, paper, leaves and other debris that can blow off of the upper decks and in from the surrounding area.

Like many hotels several of the private decks are separated by walls and latices. These are not designed to block the guest from all potential noise but rather to lend some privacy from view. Having just returned from a vacation in Hawaii staying at a 5 star hotel, I experienced the same issue with my neighbor. He was constantly on the cellphone and while annoying, I distracted myself with the ocean view and conversation with my wife. Since the rooms and decks share a common wall I understand complete isolation is not possible.

When staying at the Laguna Riviera, if your goal is to have a quiet room as far away from other guests, and the public areas, please let us know and we will accommodate as best we can with what is available. Rooms like 406 can be very quiet save for the sound of the crashing waves.

While I understand this guests concerns about the potential of noisy neighbors and what they could do and what might happen, it appears that none of it actually did happen, and they slept quite well.

We find that our guests are generally considerate of others, but should such a thing happen, and anyone is bothered by noisy guests please contact the office so the issue can be addressed. While certainly not a common occurrence, families on vacation can sometimes stay up later than usual visiting and sitting outdoors in the warm evening air. We understand this, and our staff is always available and happy to intervene asking guests to quiet down and be respectful of others.

Being right on the ocean the Laguna Riviera, like many of the other ocean front hotels in town is constantly maintaining and servicing the property to stay ahead of the harsh salt air and coastal winds. It is truly a full time job which is why we have several maintenance staff members who are dedicated to doing this on a daily basis year round.

Happy travels,

Kort

We stayed in the beach bungalow last June. It was amazing. For less than the price of two hotel rooms at other places, you had a full, three bedroom cottage, right on the water in the center of town - walking distance to everything. Now, if you insist on marble and high end fixtures, you might be disappointed. But this is just like a family beach home. Everything you need is there. Views are incredible, and you have a sense of privacy right in the center of town. It is very comfortable. The staff is great - Alex at the front desk was so helpful. Our three tennagers loved it. The only thing is, if you have a rentl car, get a small one, because getting into the private garage is a bit tight. We would definitely choose the cottage on a return to Laguna Beach.

Room Tip: The cottage is wonderful.

Thank you for sharing your experience in, and opinion of our Beach Bungalow and your positive review of our staff. The Beach Bungalow is an amazing value and you could easily spend the same amount or more at other hotels for a single ocean front room.

By summer of 2012, we plan on having the lower patios completed and ready for use. Once done you will be able to relax outdoors and enjoy the sand, surf & sunsets from your own private lounge just feet from the crashing waves, or entertain under the stars with Catalina Island on the horizon while cooking from your private seaside BBQ.

Thanks again and we look forward to being your destination of choice when you return to Laguna Beach.
