As was the service and experience at this place. Decent stretch of beach is basically the best feature of this beach motel. The room we had was quite dated, not new (rug had to have been 20 years old- gave the impression of dirtiness) with a busted shower door, and when we arrived, we realized that a better room (e.g., not right on the busy street with all the accompanying noise, actually having a beach view) would have cost us double. Also we had booked on Booking.com and the desk person was exceedingly unhelpful in trying to help us negotiate a new room- we would have paid more for a better spot but ended up giving up because of the hassle. We changed our stay from two nights to one night. Breakfast included was not bad, although it was kind of awkward as served right in the front desk lobby with staff doling out portions of things that realistically should have been self serve (e.g., coffee). The indoor pool was the draw for us, but it is really old and badly in need of updates. Nonetheless the kids had fun swimming and it helped with the unseasonably cold weather we experienced. Still, it's weird being in the pool with the walking and vehicle traffic, including city buses with a full view of it all!
Day desk staff was more friendly and helpful (apologetic) than the night person and was helpful in issuing a refund for the second night, which we ended up being charged for, despite making the switch to one night through Booking.com ; had it not been for that factor, we would have rated this place as "poor".
Didn't really understand how urban the environment of this motel was; for that reason and these others, probably wouldn't return here. They seem to be updating it one bit at a time, so no doubt it will soon be a lovely boutique motel (and they are clearly already charging a premium for updated rooms with views). Overall too rich for us with our Canadian currency- we definitely saw better value for money on this trip!

Room tip: Do not book a room closer to street -not the sounds of the ocean we were hoping for! Rooms with ocean view cost a lot more.

Like the gal at the front desk put it: "the bars and restaurants in Laguna that are on the west side of PCH take advantage of their location by charging too much for average food, whereas the places to the east of PCH have to make up for the lack of a view by offering better food for the same or less money.

However, the same may be said for the hotels in Laguna Beach, including the Laguna Riviera which offers what is arguably one of the best views along this stretch of the Coast Highway but in an older facility that is in dire need of modernization. The oceanfront decks and lounge chairs are first class but the rooms are tired, the beds are worn and the bathrooms forlorn.

Even if all they did was spend a $1,000 room on new beds and pillows it would make all the difference in the world and if they were to drop ten dimes ($10K) on every room this place would be first class.

You can't beat the location for a visit to Laguna and you certainly can't beat the view. I would recommend one of the rooms with a private or semi-private balcony. They aren't all that much more expensive than the rooms that have access to a shared balcony on the 4th floor or the terrace on level 3 and you won't have people walking past your front window all day and night. I also suspect that the rooms with private balconies may have been updated more recently than the 1950s which is when the room we stayed in appeared to have last been updated.

Room tip: Level 4 and 5 have rooms with private or semi-private balconies. Spend the extra money and get one of those rooms.

Well the room is terribly run down and you will have to ask and wait in line for towels in the morning. The staff was very nice, except for one young lady who is probably a family member was terribly rude to everyone. Apparently the owners son likes to sit in the lobby and reminisce with customers coming in for breakfast. There was OK food in the morning but the waffle makers don’t work. Parking will be a problem although there is one small covered parking garage which we managed to damage our car trying to get in and out of. Considering the rooms we rented accommodated easily 10 people there was only parking for one car. The hotel is a bit run down and very old-school but it’s all worth it for the view. We will go back again next year but will probably seek out nicer accommodations considering the amount of money it cost.

It was a great place to get away. It was walking distance from all the shops and restaurants, we didn't have to drive anywhere. It was right on the beach too, and so, so cute! It was clean, and perfect.
