Disney's boat rentals - great staff, super helpful, and always with a smile. Rented a very nice 190hp Tahoe ski boat for 3 days. The boat was in great and was well maintained. Best skiing of my life. Taught my twin 13 year olds to water ski. Which brings me to...
Unbelievable Clear Lake! We were skiing on the water June 16-18 2014, there was no wind, there was rarely another boat on the lake, the water was smooth and warm. I've skied for years on Tahoe in a wet suit, starting at 7 am until 9am when the wind comes up. On Tahoe there are enough ski boats that you are always dealing with wakes, and newbie jerks in super expensive boats. On Clearlake, there are boat ramps everywhere, the water in June is like a slightly cool swimming pool, the air ranged from 70 at 9am, to 88 in the late afternoon. Clearlake is not clear, it is silty, with channels through the weeds for the first few hundred feet, after getting past the weeds you get to a hundred square miles of perfectly flat ski water with great views and no on the water traffic. No wetsuits needed! We skied, knee boarded, and fished for bass all day long.
Our last ski was at 5pm, because we got tired, but we could have easily continued on until dusk at 8:30.
There are some pleasant places to eat in Lakeport, and a couple of decent places to stay. Lakeport has a few blocks of cool old buildings from the 1880s, and the usual newer stuff, it is not a fancy place, but friendly with mixed economics. The city consists of half million dollar houses with piers on the lake, and blocks of $150k houses off the lake. If you can live without a Starbucks or a brioche, Clear Lake (the city of Lakeport CA) is a unbelievable water ski destination only two hours from San Francisco.
