We now live in Montana and except for Grandkids we miss La Palapa the most! It was our place to meet friends (100's over the years), to go for great Margaritas (send me a couple of jugs of mix, Darla), and to enjoy the great food. This place is an institution in not only Lakeside but all of San Diego.

Expand to Hamilton, Montana and our new home would really be heaven! The once a year trip South is not enough! Miss you all. Stu & Linda

I once read a review of the Lapp as the locals call it. It said that "the person had lived in Lakeside 20 Years and never been inside. (The only sit down Mexican Restaurant in Lakeside?) They had to wait in the bar before being seated and each had a few Margaritas (Voted Best in San Diego in more than one poll). When they got seated and served, the food was wonderful." The food is good and there is plenty to chose from, but it becomes wonderful after a few of the great margs. There are a few things not on the menu, that are wonderful, the Sheri Salad, best you ever had and the Bernadette Burrito, the first bite is unbelievable, but it calms down from there. It is very good. Jim N is right about the staff, they are very good and your drink glass, be it water, marg or ice tea is never allowed to get empty. It is a small restaurant and the best time to get in is for lunch, any day but Sunday and early in the week in the evening unless you want to go to the bar first. That is usually packed from 4:30 or 5 on most week days. A few times a week, it is the drop by place for the original Marlboro Man, a Lakeside Rodeo Legend. His picture is in the bar. If you are in Lakeside for the Rodeo, drop by and rub shoulders with some of the top riders in the nation, but expect standing room only. I've been here since '79 and never had a bad meal or poor service. Hats off to Bernadette the owner.

This is a very popular place and my mother loves it, but for the life of me, I don't know why.
First of all. Let me state that the staff treats everyone like an old friend or long lost family. They are really super nice and that is why it is so hard for me to post an average rating.
They have various bingo nights and the regulars always seem to have a lot of fun.
Having said that, the food is just OK. I think they use too much cumin in EVERYTHING.
Seating is difficult in the bar area and the main dining room isn't very big either. It gets so loud with people having fun (getting drunk and screaming out loud laughing) that you can't hear the person sitting right next to you and the shrieks of laughter tend to be unnerving if you aren't at the same level of intoxication as everyone else. Something tells me that achieving that level takes years of practice.
If you like to drink a lot, you want to meet very nice people and staff, you DON'T really care about eating the Mexican food or you are addicted to cumin, then this is the place for you.

great margaritas and a good menu. Kids menu portions are really small (too small for my 9 year old).

La Palapa has excellent Mexican food! Their Chile Rellenos are simply the best. They are hand made the old fashioned way; they are big and stuffed with cheese and very tasty! Their beef tacos, rolled tacos and flautas are very good too. Their carrots are great too, I guess everything they serve is just GREAT!! We dine here frequently, yum, yum!
