When In Lee Vining, do not miss the Mono Lake South Tufa state park – you’ll see pictures of it galore in this as well as every other shop in town, South Tufa is one of the more otherworldly and bizarre, fascinating spots, like a place out of Lord of The Rings. Grouped on the southwestern end of Mono Lake, there is an enchanting collection of stupendous tufa formations. Tufa is the scientific name for a geological formation of this exact chemical composition, and the tufa columns look like fancy little creations made by running wet sand through your fist and letting it form into sires. They were actually created underwater, when carbonates in the lake water combined with calcium from freshwater springs feeding into the lake, rather like underwater stalactites, which down through the eons roe to the surface and are now fanciful little turrets and spires, rocks and whole battlements.
