My husband and I figure that this latest trip to Glendeven was about the tenth time we've been there over the past 15 years. We've tried other spots in and around Mendocino, but they just don't add up! We enjoy the luxury, the food (not just the daily happy hour, but also the Bistro 150 dinner, which was amazing), the care exercised by everyone on the staff, the gorgeous gardens, the chickens and llamas, the lovely wood-burning fireplaces, the fabulous views -- really, you couldn't have a better time in Mendocino County. We'll be back, probably again and again.

Room Tip: Bay Loft has the most amazing view of any of the rooms in our estimation.

I was skeptical at first to book a room here for me and my husband and my brother and sister in laws who were also joining us over the memorial day weekend but i read the reviews and i was impressed. It was our first trip to Mendocino and all the more impressed we were when we arrived at the Inn,Aurelia on the frontdesk was very nice, accomodating and friendly. It was so nice to have your own parking space with your own name attached to it after a long trip and the endless coffee, tea and sweets awaiting for you at the farmhouse and it was open for 24hrs. My husband and I stayed at the Bayloft we were blown away by the views, comfy bed, nice bedding etc andt he breakfast was delicious.... It was a great place to relax and unwind no TV ,internet or Phone x3 days it seems torture @ first but peace ,tranquility and serenity is healthy @times.My only request is that i hope they will hang a full lenght mirror in the room vanity is important you know.. and a shade for that 3 small windows so we can sleep a little longer and not bothered by the sunlight. John and Michael are also very nice . It is just unfortunate we live about 8 hrs from this place but definitely we will be back hopefully on a yearly basis but my in laws who are from the Bay area stayed at the Pine Wood and they are coming back next month...need i say more ...

To much positive seems to be doubtful but in this situation....no choice.
1. Location : perfect: not far from Mendocino by car but not in the town
2. Large, airy and nice view ( landscape, sea) nice gardens
3. You arrive: first +++ : your name on the parking lot: the guest exists
4. The host is perfect, always with good ideas or suggestions
5. Our room was large and really better than on the photos website
6. The breakfast is delicious ( maybe more bread or a touch of Danish pastries ??)
2 small critics: restaurant only few days a week, bar maybe closed too early

This was our first visit to Glendeven Inn and we were not disappointed! The grounds are beautiful and very private. We stayed in the "Briar Rose", the room was very comfortable, the linens they use on the bed are the best! Morning breakfast-delivered to the room each day in a picnic basket- was yummy! I would highly recommend this inn to everyone. A great place to disconnect and relax.

Lovely property with large rooms with some luxurious details such as nice bedding and a lovely porch with views of llamas, flowers and distant ocean. But some of the luxury details just aren't quite executed well. The bathrooms have nice soaps but in containers that either were jammed or empty and the shower was small. They have a complimentary wine tasting but the server didn't know what the wine was! The pour was tiny and he did not know how to set the snacks out appropriately though he tried. Strangest was that the complimentary breakfast was delivered from behind a bookcase that was actually a door and with no notice before it swung open! Luckily we were dressed... Similarly our first floor room had only the sheerest of curtains between it and the walkway. If the owners can get the kinks out it will be a lovely inn. I am giving it a 3 because for the significant money it should be better.

Lovely, enchanting, quiet, peaceful, magical, special...those are the words that come to mind when thinking about our stay at Glendeven. Never mind that it was our "engagement" trip - my fiancé proposing at Glendeven. The grounds are amazing!

While I'm hardly an expert on B&B's - I've stayed at enough of them to know that B&B's aren't run like a hotel per se. So for whatever disappointing experiences others have had here - ours was quite the opposite. As far as we were concerned, John and his unobtrusive staff were quietly attentive to anything we needed.

We stayed in Eastlin Suite - king bed, no tv, smallish but very workable bathroom, sitting room with GAS fireplace and a small porch (with view of the ocean and pasture) where we had breakfast each morning after going out into the pasture to help John feed the Llamas (baby PJ my favorite.) We received Sonia's breakfasts (through the magic bookcase) and they are simply amazing - how she gets that much goodness for two on one tray - defies logic.

We fed the Llamas and chickens, talked to the quail who were "talking" to us each morning - let the stellar jays attempt to steal a small breakfast treat, visited the garden and had great wine and appetizers in the Wine Bar(n) each evening. John and his staff arranged a massage for two in our room (they were outstanding) horseback riding on the beach at Ricochet Ranch and Farm to Table dinner at their other property. We enjoyed chatting with other couples there - all of us enjoyed the wine paired dinner (we are wine buffs and their wines were terrific.)

For dining around town - we had the best meal at Maccallum House Inn and another good meal at Café Beaujolais. For lunch, Mendocino Café and Patterson's Pub (seemed like a locals hangout) both put out extremely fresh food.

We also took both the headlands trail (about 10-15 min) as well as the beach trail down to Van Damme State beach (about 5-8 min) - though I'm sure with more time there are many other trails and hikes to take - these were short. If you're into gardening the Botanical Gardens are a must see... just amazing... and the trails take you to more headlands where the views are breathtaking. Easy walking and they have scooters (like a Hoverround) for those that are disabled or simply can't walk that far (47 acres.)

So all that said, here are things to remember: Microwave, refrigerator/ice and small sink are outside of each 'house.' Breakfast not till 9 a.m. - which for us early birds is a bit late, however they have coffee/tea in the main farmhouse to tide you over till breakfast arrives. We brought a cooler with snacks which was helpful. I prefer darker coffee than the Inn provides so next time I'll bring my own ground dark coffee to use in their French presses. Cell reception is terrible/non-existent until you get into town, but Wi-Fi was readily available. While I do agree that their reception staff could be a bit better versed and prepared to send people to the right restaurant given a travelers' preferences, we asked and received good directions to many other locations and short cuts for hikes we were interested in taking.

Most rooms at Glendeven have smallish queen beds and no TV's. Their sister property across the street, most rooms are kings and have TV's. So go with what makes you comfortable. We asked Sonia for a few of the breakfast recipes and she happily obliged. We also took home 3 dozen freshly (as in that morning) laid eggs from their hens and some jam.

So just remember, this is NOT a hotel - and each B&B has it's own way of doing things. As with many accommodations in Europe, if you can roll with the fact that it's not a hotel and enjoy it for all the other things it has that a hotel never could - you'll have a grand time. We certainly did and will be back as often as possible!!

The Glendeven Inn is a truly special place. You have almost total privacy, if you want it. Breakfast made with eggs from their own hen house, along with a S.F. Chronicle,is delivered to your room. Fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit, home-baked breads, and some of the best coffee this side of home. Then you are off on your own Mendocino adventure. Yet, it was at the Inn that the most astounding thing happened. They have six llamas on the property. You can sit on your balcony and watch them, along with a parcel of wild birds. One late afternoon, all of a sudden, all six llamas turned and looked in the same direction. Following their stare, we could see a silver fox just inside the fenced area. The alpha llama began to prance toward the fox, his head held high. A regal sight, as he approached the fox. When he got within 20 ft. the fox relented and jumped over the fence and into the woods. The llama saved the chickens. This happened in the US, no less.

Room Tip: If you have a massage, ask for Mary Kay.
