We have been to missions before, and did not expect much different, but we were wrong. Start off at the Visitor Centre for SURE, to get a self-guided map, but more to listen to the background of the site from the volunteers. The centre is also full of artifacts and explanations and even a video of some of the men who aided the restoration. Then walk around the grounds. It was a totally interesting and worthwhile trip!

This is a great state park if you like Indian and Spanish California history and you like to hike. It is large and has a long trail up the canyon if you want to add that in. It has historical breeds of cattle, donkey, sheep and pigs, and about everything you want to know about mission life. Good outdoor and indoor artifact and equipment displays. Go on their pioneer week where all the docents adopt a historical character and year and stay in character.

We have visited many of the spanish missions, but this one gives the best experience as to what it was like when the missions were active. Most of the missions are great, but consist of only a fraction of the total experience. La Purisma has the whole experience, with the church, residence, workshops, garden, farm, etc. It's great to walk around and really get a feeling for the place.

We didn't have enough time to see all of the sights (the property is very large) but most of it is relatively close together. The mission is about an hour from Santa Barbara and 30 minutes from Santa Ines mission in Solvang.

Admission is by vehicle so very low cost.

Having grown up in Lompoc, I have been visiting La Purisima for many, many years. I am so impressed with how well it has been maintained over the years! Set aside a full day to explore every nook and cranny and make sure you make the hike up the hill! It's worth it!
