“Winter Camping fun! Perfect campsite!”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

Took a chance and decided to go here for some winter camping, buurrrr! But really worth it. It is free in the winter, we were the only ones at the campground, it was very quiet and peaceful, very clean and well kept overall. It was worth the cold temperatures, so peaceful with beautiful views of Mt. Whitney and the stars!

Stayed here for 2 nights before/after out Whitney climb. Pretty bare, exposed sites. But great views! Pit toilets are some of the cleanest I've been to. Grounds immaculate. We stayed in site 16. Had a tree over te picnic table. Site 17 looked awesome, full tree coverage. Wouldn't want to stay there long as very hot. But since we were day hiking the summit, we were only there for 1/2 a night the first night; and the second night we passes out from exhaustion...it worked out just fine!!! And for $17/night? Just perfect.

We just got back from mount whitney today and I had a few minutes to sit down and write a review. The other reviews were right. This place was pretty bare and hot. Not much shade and definitely not much privacy from campsite to campsite. There was a little stream just down the hill from the campsite that we spent some time at and found a great place to relax although the water was freezing! I had to rate the customer service a 3 because I had originally booked the campsite from sunday the 11th to thursday the 15th and paid for it on recreation.gov. Due to some family problems we couldn't make it sunday and called recreation.gov they said there was nothing they could do and call the campsite itself. I did and I tried explaining to the man on the phone we didn't wany a refund for sunday and if we could just arrive on monday. He told us we should have reserved it for monday and should have made sure we could make it before we commit to something, but he said that there could be a possibility that it would be there, but if they needed the space we would be out of luck..even after we paid for the full 4 nights. Luckily it was still open and the only thing that saved the review was the campsite manager there. We was really nice and cool. Also recreation.gov says there is flushing toilets there. There wasn't any near our camp site just a big hole and a toillet placed over it. It was okay, not what we expected but not unusual for camping. Overall not a bad place.

My son, brother, and brothers girlfriend stayed here July 22 to 23 to climb Whitney. Host was very friendly and kept eye on grounds. Bad storms washed only road in/out of campground overnight. They did a fantastic job of rebuilding the washed out road I the morning so cars could get in and out. Bathrooms very clean and neat. They stayed at campsite number one which looked like the best one to me.

I have stayed at this particular campground for the past couple of years for the annual pilgrimage to Manzanar (WWII Japanese American Internment Camp). It's a great place to stay, plenty of parking and room for tents and gear. Bathrooms are very clean and taken care of every hour. The host here is very diligent with the upkeep of the camp and is there to make sure everything is running smoothly. There is a little creek running on the backside of the campground that is great for trout fishing. The campground itself is very easy to access, when you enter the city Lone Pine, you make a left at the only stop light in the city, which is Whitney Portal. You drive up roughly 7 miles and you're here. Great hiking all around the area and everyone is respectful making our trips very enjoyable. Definitely worth staying here!

If it's hot in Owens Valley, you'll be hot here too. Most of the sites are very open and exposed and, well, hot. That being said, the host was very friendly, the sites were well groomed and appointed (picnic table, fire pit, parking) and the bathrooms were clean. The views, well, the cannot be beat! I was staying here as a base camp for a long day hike in the area so I didn't spend much time at the site. Note - the crickets were SO LOUD that you're one who needs white noise to sleep, you'll do great here! If you're road tripping it and need a clean, friendly campground, give this place a try. I'll return someday for sure.

This place defies logic and expectation. You drive up this dirt track destination Mt Whitney; apparently there's a campground here somewhere and just as you think things have gone seriously wrong with the GPS - there it is !! a little oasis in the desert... it's Lone Pine Campground ! Gosh what a setting and enough campsite comfort to make life civil. This was one of the most spectacular settings we encountered in a long RV trip around the western USA and remember it fondly. (I really don't think Seb O is talking about the same place here....)
