“Great Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I truly enjoyed my stay at The Varden. The staff was very welcoming and genuinely wanted to make sure I had a satisfying experience at their hotel. I must say it is the best customer service I have had at a hotel. The hotel is distinguished and cozy, and I loved the daily, complimentary snacks provided! I plan to stay there again in the future.

Just off the beaten path in downtown Long Beach. Just one block to Pine St with many fine restaurants. (Kings Fish House) A short 10-15 min. walk to the Convention Center and the Shoreline area. The free red tourist bus is a right turn out the front door to the bus stop on the next block. Takes you to the Shoreline area, also connect with the ferry ($1.00) to the Queen Mary. Red bus over ferry back. Morning breakfast (fruit, muffins, cereal, tea, coffee, etc.)
Wine and snackies in the evening. The staff were tops, great value for Long Beach

Room Tip: Stayed on the second floor, room was nice size, comfy bed.

The Varden is a small and quirky boutique hotel. If you like a traditional Hilton - Hyatt - Marriott experience this hotel is not for you. My experience was mixed. The best part was the staff. They go out of their way to be personable and helpful - even remembering your name. They are truly accommodating and will help in any way they can. As just one example, they always asked if I wanted a bottle of water whenever I left the hotel. Now to the quirkiness. The room I stayed in was the smallest hotel room I had ever seen (and I travel a lot), I never thought that it would be possible to have a hotel room that was smaller than a standard cabins on a cruise ship, but this was. They did try some creative space solutions and the materials were first rate. But there was no closet and only one drawer. The desk was tiny and therefore very hard to work at. It had no outlets to plug in anything electronic! The bathroom was also tiny. The sink was so small that the shelf over it covered up 75% of the opening. As such, the sink was almost unusable - try washing your face or brushing your teeth when getting anywhere near the faucet means that you hit your head on a shelf. The shower was also so small as to almost be unusable. It was a square with about 18 inches on each side. You could not stand in it without both arms hitting the surrounding shower curtain (I kid you not). Again, I never thought that I would see a smaller shower than that on a cruise ship, but there you were.. Finally, although the hotel was generally quiet, I had the misfortune to have the room at the top of the first flight of stairs. That meant that all the noise from people talking at the reception desk funneled up to my room. So stay at the Varden if you want a quirky historic hotel with a great staff that gives you the tiniest hotel room you can possibly imagine.

Excellent location, friendly helpful staff, but a room that is 8 by 13 feet is just too small to be sold as a double, and how does that make it the best hotel in Long Beach? Loved the wine and nibbles, great way to meet other guests, but a very sparse breakfast in the corridor was not what I had expected.

Great location for pine Ave and the front but the room number 8 was smaller than I would ever choose again. Great hosts and the wine and nibbles at 5-6pm a treat. But room sooooo tiny all i can say is it's for one adult attending the conference not a couple. Thanks to my very tolerant husband for continually moving out of the way. A 4ft 6" bed against the wall isn't pleasant.Room8 is before the stairs and is 4'smaller. .too small guys: give it to single occupancy guests . It's a very convenient place but sterile and clinical; my girls thought we'd gone to a hospital. Functional very clean but a disappointing stay.

The Varden Hotel's careful renovation maintains the building's intriguing history while meeting the needs of the modern traveler seeking something different than what is offered by the many large, branded hotels in Long Beach..

The rooms are small and well designed with excellent lighting, desks that perfectly accommodate laptops, remotes for controlling air conditioning/heat and windows that open! The complimentary wifi is fast. There are far more cable TV channels than what I get at home and there is something about the beds that allow me to sleep exceptionally well.

As the restored sign on the roof declares, all rooms have private baths! Of course, those baths have been upgraded since the sign's original heyday. Modern fixtures, gleaming white tiles, nice soap and plenty of towels suit most present day travelers' tastes.

Want a different firmness of pillow or some other tweaking of your room? Just ask. Your request can most likely be met.

Each evening's complimentary wine gathering is graciously hosted, providing an opportunity to meet and chat with fellow guests. The Varden attracts a varied and interesting crowd. Many are return business guests who stay here while attending events at the Convention Center.

In the morning your choice of yoghurt, oatmeal, muffins and juice is available in the nook housing the selection of coffees and teas. Supplies are constantly replenished. It's a fast and fuss free way to start the day. .

The staff is hospitable in the most genuine sense. They go well beyond their warm welcomes, city maps, fresh fruit and offers to carry bags to your room.

Anticipating needs is one of their specialties. An exercising guest is offered a yoga mat or a reduced rate pass to a nearby gym. . An ace bandage is available for a guest who twisted a knee at the curb. How do they know just the right moment to hand you a bottle of cold water and suggest you sit and chat while waiting for your shuttle to the airport?

If you are at The Varden on a Friday, explore the Farmer's Market set up at the corner. Tasty and well priced lunches are available from vendors.

There are plenty of interesting restaurants on Pine Ave, about a block from The Varden, and in the surrounding area. The Cinco de Mayo restaurant right next door to The Varden is obviously a local favorite. The food proves why.

I had occasion to stay at The Varden Hotel in May 2014 while attending a conference and exhibition in Long Beach, California.

After getting over the initial shock of very small rooms, the experience turned into a joy.

The service was exceptional from the front office staff who were always on hand and ready and willing to assist with any detail. The bed was the most sumptuous and comfortable of ANY bed I have slept in any hotel anywhere in the world!!

The only downside I experiences was the lack of closet/wardrobe space (there is none) which is a challenge when you are travelling on business and need to hang suits and jackets.

Not sure it is a great "business" hotel but the accommodation and experience and the way you are treated by the staff overcomes any of the shortfalls.
