The welcome at the front desk was pleasant and we had a real good feeling when we were greeted by Charles Knowlton. After personally showing us the room, my wife and I were impressed with how clean and organized it was. The set-up for an iPod was a plus, the free internet access was easy to connect, and the perfectly pressed three-sheeted bed was another plus. Included with our stay was coffee, bottled water, muffins, cereal, fruit and a newspaper....a definite bonus! Chatting with Larry Black, the owner, made it a very pleasant trip. A fabulous hotel for 'sweet dreams' !!!

This hotel reminds me of business hotels in Europe, right down to the smallish accomodation, sleek fixtures, down comforter, and tram running by outside. Perfectly comfortable, quiet, clean, free broadband wireless, friendly and helpful hosts. Very reasonable rates. Decent continental breakfast with oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, juice, and mini-muffins. If you're expecting a Holiday Inn-type room you will feel like a fish out of water, but if you're a well-traveled cosmopoliitan you'll feel right at home.

This Hotel would be even more excellent if it were located in a better part of Long Beach. I found this hotel while reading reviews on tripadvisor. I picked it because of the warm reviews and the price. For a three night stay, I was satisfied.

It's clean, it's efficient, and the rooms are very nice with a new feel to them. It's a hotel for singles or couples, not for families. Our room was on the 2nd floor, the bed was one of the best hotel beds I've ever slept on. Room comes equipped with an HD, Flatscreen TV, and a bathroom for a closet, with a sliding-mirror door. It's a few blocks away from one of the main areas of Long Beach (Convention Center, etc), but don't think you should try walking there. The continental breakfast left something to be desired, but the coffee and beverages were okay. The internet worked fine.

There is a lovely coffee shop behind the parking lot, adjacent to the Varden. It's called the Birdcage, and offers excellent coffee. However, on our second night, a brutal beating of a homeless man took place on the sidewalk infront of the birdcage at around 3 AM. So, the neighborhood is a little dodgy, but after talking to one of the owners of the Varden (you'll probably meet both), Long Beach is being redeveloped and hopefully it follows in the footsteps set by the Varden.

I like how this hotel had a borderline, bed and breakfast feel to it. Because it is so small, and the fact that the hotel has a long history (good and bad), it seems as if the new owners and the property were a perfect match. They spared no expense or detail in the renovation and reopening of this former brothel/crack house. (look it up!). I will definitely stay there again when I get the chance, and hopefully the owners will remember me after taking such an interest in their customers.

We stayed for one night at the Varden after attending a wedding at Catalina (where many hotel rooms had minimum-night or expensive stays). The Varden room was clean, and the staff friendly and efficient. It was small and perfect for spending the night (and having free continental breakfast in the a.m.) after a busy day - and our AAA rate was inexpensive, too!

We came out for the comic convention and wanted to spend the night. The hotel is only three blocks from the Convention Center. Upon entering, we were greeted in very friendly fashion and offered bottled water or coffee. We were shown around - where the wine tasting would be and the continental breakfast, as well as the fruit available all day - and then up to our rooms. We had to take the stairs up a couple of short flights in the vintage building. The hotel is well lit, clean and comfortable. The rooms are small but smartly designed. The bed was very comfortable. The price was much more reasonable than any other hotel with anywhere near this level of comfort and convenience. Highly recommended.

I would recommend the Varden to anyone who is traveling to Long Beach, Los Angeles or even San Diego. The hotel is very chic and hip and all of the employees make you feel at home. Owner Larry Black takes the time to meet and greet every guest. I can't say enough FABULOUS things about this hotel. I will stay there anytime I am in the Los Angeles area without a doubt.

The Varden defines why boutique hotels are so much better than the cookie cutter hotels. The rooms were designed with great care, patience, insight, and love of the task to be done, and it shows.

The bed was smallish in our downstairs room, but I was told that there are queen sized beds on the second floor. The bathrooms just made me grin with pleasure to see; Swedish faucets on a rectangular lav with a circular mirror backlit over the sink. Free Wi-Fi. Some of the best fresh-brewed coffee I've ever had in a hotel.

And the praise goes on; ask for recommendations for dinner and you'll be steered to the best of whatever you want one block over on Pine Street. I wanted to drop by Whole Foods and was provided with a fresh print-out from Mapquest. Service as an art form still lives at The Varden Hotel.

There were pleasant conversations with the staff every time I asked for help, directions, whatever. A follow-up thank you email with a remembered nod to conversations we had at the hotel.

The Varden Hotel takes care and service to the top level, and the rooms mirror those same qualities. When in Long Beach, you've got The Varden; don't miss it.
