“The worst hotel i ever stay”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 October 2009

I had stay in American Choice(A 1 star hotel) before, this Cecil Hotel is way behind a 1 star hotel. I will never ever visit this hotel again even it's FREE. The room is as bad as the cell i visited in Alcatraz (San Francisco). I really doubt it's a 2 star hotel.
- The so call 'Queen' Size bed is equal to the single bed in American Choice.
- The SHARED toilet along the corridor got no place to wash hand.
- The Room got no A/C nor fan.
- The basin is rusted.

A word of warning is to make sure you have enough funds in your account for the deposit that they block for incidentals. You have to wait for 3-5 working days for them to release the deposit after staying at the hotel (in our case approximately $200 was blocked)
The windows in this place are paper thin so bring earplugs.
The staff were very helpful and assisted with any query.
Overall for someone visiting LA for the first time (like was our case) I wouldn't recommend staying in the downtown area anyway. its a bit dead.

Great place to "stay" in downtown LA. Reasonably priced-choice of private or shared baths. ( no hairdryers, though). Walking distance to Little Tokyo, main library, LA Times, and especially the Nickel Diner which has absolutely the best breakfast in town-try the oatmeal!

STAY seems to attract a younger crowd; think European languages with expensive backpacks. Free computers, printers, and WI-FI. Coffee, newspapers and snacks available in downstairs shop. Close to public transportation. Neighborhood a bit suspect after dark, but overall a great value and clean, pleasant surroundings.
I will definitely stay again on my next trip.

The Cecil is possessed of neither air-conditioning nor internet access, despite making mendacious claims in its advertising to both. Avoid the place like the plague! Because, sitting on my bed, showered yet positively steaming, in a room that lacked even a fully-opening window for ventilation, I opted (rather than endure one night in this sub-tropical hell-hole) to go straight back to the Greyhound Station and spend the night on a much more comfortable Greyhound Bus.

In retrospect I'm glad I did: the Cecil is the pits!

Ok, I get it. Stay Hotel is a funky, modern take on a hostel, and I appreciate the effort taken to update this old building. It is cheap and has a few good things: clean rooms, daily maid service, friendly desk staff, and FREE WiFi in the lobby (as well as 4 up-to-date Apple desktops).

Now onto the bad (and by bad - I mean UNBEARABLE). There is no air conditioning in the rooms. This information is conveniently omitted from the website. Of course, this building was probably built in 1900, so it can't be upfitted to accommodate a brand new air conditioning system. However, the developer/manager felt like buying flat screen plasma TV's for each room would be a better purchase then portable air conditioning units (which are about the same price). I would have gladly paid $10 extra a night (or whatever) to have a portable AC unit in my unit. Not that difficult! Air conditioning in 99 degree LA heat is a MUST and I believe it's inhumane to not have it. We promptly checked out once we realized how disgustingly hot and unbearable it was. To top it off, our next door neighbor blared their TV at 2am, which naturally woke us up through the paper thin walls. We called the front desk to complain, which our neighbors could hear, and they promptly turned off their TV.

I think that most of the travelers at Stay Hotel are international travelers who are used to not having air conditioning and don't know any better. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here unless it's the months October through April, when the heat wouldn't be an issue.

Everyone warned us about the neighbourhood/location of the hotel. We were apprehensive at the beginning, after reading the reviews of the hotel and hearing the stories. But truth be told it was alright. The hotel looked nicer/cleaner than we had expected it to be. We got a free upgrade, and our room was okay. I mean, sure it wasn't spacious and luxurious but we weren't expecting too much. Afterall, for the price we paid (60-70 in total a night for 2 of us) the only other decent alternative would be an 8 bed hostel room.
The lobby looked really pretty, even though i wouldnt say the same about the rooms. Then again, at least the rooms were clean and cozy. There are even lounges on the 2nd floor for people to hang out/use the wifi at. Pretty cool stuff.
The neighbourhood was quite dodgy, with lots of weird beggars hanging around, and we saw a couple of sketchy occupants going in and out of the hotel, but it was fine for my friend and i (both girls), so it should be fine for you as well. Of course nobody's telling you to go out in the middle of the night and expect it to be safe.
But otherwise i thought it was okay, especially with the low price. Oh, and the hotel staff were amazing. They were friendly and funny, which made the stay even better!
