We stayed at the LA Athletic Club for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon in September. The hotel is amazing. It is so different from other hotels we have stayed in. It feels like an old boys club. Everything is decorated in dark browns and greys with leather furniture, and plush furnishings. It is an athletic club, so the first 9 floors are taken up by the gym, pool, basketball court, track and many other sporty related things. Then the rooms are on floors 10-12.
We got to the hotel at about 10am and the really helpful lady on reception was able to check us in straight away, even though check in isn’t until 4pm. She gave a free upgrade to a corner suite on floor 10, which was a great surprise. She also gave us vouchers for a free hot breakfast every morning and a floor guide.
The lobby of the hotel felt really nice. The reception desk is quite small, but we never had to wait to speak to anybody. There is a polished marble floor and brown leather sofas to lounge about on. There are 4 lifts in the hotel, and we didn’t have to wait more than about 10 seconds for one. In fact, most of the time there was a lift waiting on the ground floor for us.
The room itself was amazing. We were in room 1027 which is the Beach Club Suite. It is on the corner of the hotel, so it has loads of windows, with views over different parts of the city. It was decorated in light grey with vases of shells, and pictures of beach things on the walls. We had a separate lounge area, which had a table and chairs, a sofa and two comfy chairs, and a HD TV in a cabinet. There was also a little room next to the front room which had a tea and coffee maker and a sink with a tap for washing up. There was a wardrobe on the left of the room as we walked in which had a safe in it.
The bedroom was also really nice. It had a desk and chair for working, a comfy chair in the corner of the room, loads of windows again, and a massive comfy bed. The linens were so nice and soft and comfortable. There was another HD TV and another wardrobe. There was also a sink and vanity area just outside the bathroom. The bathroom itself was quite small, with just a shower and toilet, but there were loads of fluffy towels and the shower was nice and hot with good pressure.
We used the free hot breakfast vouchers every day. It is served in the ‘Famous Players’ lounge on the 3rd floor from 7am-10am. There was a lot of choice considering it was complimentary. You could have tea, coffee and juice, with as many refills as you wanted. There was also oatmeal, pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and a selection of hot food so scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, French toast, and breakfast potatoes. There were loads to choose from! We tried a little bit of everything and it was all freshly cooked and freshly made. We were really impressed.
The rest of the hotel is decorated in the same lovely style as the lobby. A lot of plush carpets, leather sofas and dark colours. The hotel even has a library! There is also a business centre next to the bar with 2 computers and a printer which was handy for printing out boarding passes. We explored as much of the hotel as we could – it is like a maze! There are sporty things on every floor, plus two shops (one for men and one for women) selling LA Athletic club tops and sweaters. The pool is huge with a Jacuzzi at one end. The gym is massive. We didn’t use it, but we had a good look round. There was also a running track which went round the edge of the pool. The sporty stuff is split up over 9 of the floors, so there is a lot of exploring to be done.
The car parking was also very good. The hotel has a multi storey car park it uses, which is just round the corner on Olive Street. It is self-parking and charged by the hotel at $12 a day, with in and out privileges. It is basically a big multi storey car park, with a lift that will then take you straight down to the hotel lobby. You get a ticket on the way in, and on the way out just give the ticket to the attendant for them to validate. Then you can just come and go as you please.
The hotel is in a good location – we never felt like it was a dodgy area as some other reviewers have mentioned. We felt quite safe walking around, even when it was dark. We didn’t venture south of the hotel though so I can’t comment on that area! The LAAC is about a 10 minute walk from Macys Plaza, which has a Macys and a few other shops. It was about a 15 minute walk from the Staples Centre too. It took us quite a while to drive to places like Hollywood Boulevard but that was more to do with the traffic than the location. Downtown really feels like it is an ‘up and coming’ area. You can tell they are trying to make an effort with it, as there are a lot of nice posh restaurants around. There is a Walgreens and a Rite Aid within a five minute walk. We also had an amazing burger from a place called the Counter which is opposite Macys Plaza.
This will definitely be the hotel we choose to stay at the next time we are in LA. It just feels so different from any other hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff were great and friendly, the room was lovely and the location was good. We will definitely be back!
