The Los Angeles Athletic Club Hotel

Reviewed 9 October 2013

We stayed at the LA Athletic Club for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon in September. The hotel is amazing. It is so different from other hotels we have stayed in. It feels like an old boys club. Everything is decorated in dark browns and greys with leather furniture, and plush furnishings. It is an athletic club, so the first 9 floors are taken up by the gym, pool, basketball court, track and many other sporty related things. Then the rooms are on floors 10-12.
We got to the hotel at about 10am and the really helpful lady on reception was able to check us in straight away, even though check in isn’t until 4pm. She gave a free upgrade to a corner suite on floor 10, which was a great surprise. She also gave us vouchers for a free hot breakfast every morning and a floor guide.

The lobby of the hotel felt really nice. The reception desk is quite small, but we never had to wait to speak to anybody. There is a polished marble floor and brown leather sofas to lounge about on. There are 4 lifts in the hotel, and we didn’t have to wait more than about 10 seconds for one. In fact, most of the time there was a lift waiting on the ground floor for us.

The room itself was amazing. We were in room 1027 which is the Beach Club Suite. It is on the corner of the hotel, so it has loads of windows, with views over different parts of the city. It was decorated in light grey with vases of shells, and pictures of beach things on the walls. We had a separate lounge area, which had a table and chairs, a sofa and two comfy chairs, and a HD TV in a cabinet. There was also a little room next to the front room which had a tea and coffee maker and a sink with a tap for washing up. There was a wardrobe on the left of the room as we walked in which had a safe in it.

The bedroom was also really nice. It had a desk and chair for working, a comfy chair in the corner of the room, loads of windows again, and a massive comfy bed. The linens were so nice and soft and comfortable. There was another HD TV and another wardrobe. There was also a sink and vanity area just outside the bathroom. The bathroom itself was quite small, with just a shower and toilet, but there were loads of fluffy towels and the shower was nice and hot with good pressure.

We used the free hot breakfast vouchers every day. It is served in the ‘Famous Players’ lounge on the 3rd floor from 7am-10am. There was a lot of choice considering it was complimentary. You could have tea, coffee and juice, with as many refills as you wanted. There was also oatmeal, pastries, cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and a selection of hot food so scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, French toast, and breakfast potatoes. There were loads to choose from! We tried a little bit of everything and it was all freshly cooked and freshly made. We were really impressed.

The rest of the hotel is decorated in the same lovely style as the lobby. A lot of plush carpets, leather sofas and dark colours. The hotel even has a library! There is also a business centre next to the bar with 2 computers and a printer which was handy for printing out boarding passes. We explored as much of the hotel as we could – it is like a maze! There are sporty things on every floor, plus two shops (one for men and one for women) selling LA Athletic club tops and sweaters. The pool is huge with a Jacuzzi at one end. The gym is massive. We didn’t use it, but we had a good look round. There was also a running track which went round the edge of the pool. The sporty stuff is split up over 9 of the floors, so there is a lot of exploring to be done.

The car parking was also very good. The hotel has a multi storey car park it uses, which is just round the corner on Olive Street. It is self-parking and charged by the hotel at $12 a day, with in and out privileges. It is basically a big multi storey car park, with a lift that will then take you straight down to the hotel lobby. You get a ticket on the way in, and on the way out just give the ticket to the attendant for them to validate. Then you can just come and go as you please.

The hotel is in a good location – we never felt like it was a dodgy area as some other reviewers have mentioned. We felt quite safe walking around, even when it was dark. We didn’t venture south of the hotel though so I can’t comment on that area! The LAAC is about a 10 minute walk from Macys Plaza, which has a Macys and a few other shops. It was about a 15 minute walk from the Staples Centre too. It took us quite a while to drive to places like Hollywood Boulevard but that was more to do with the traffic than the location. Downtown really feels like it is an ‘up and coming’ area. You can tell they are trying to make an effort with it, as there are a lot of nice posh restaurants around. There is a Walgreens and a Rite Aid within a five minute walk. We also had an amazing burger from a place called the Counter which is opposite Macys Plaza.

This will definitely be the hotel we choose to stay at the next time we are in LA. It just feels so different from any other hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff were great and friendly, the room was lovely and the location was good. We will definitely be back!

Hotel facilities are well-equipped, yet a bit outdated. Still value for money. I got a room includes free wifi and breakfast, not classy just good for a short stay. The location is convenient to Metro station, red line - two blocks away from hotel, walking distance to Old Macy plaza and Sheraton, everything on 7th street is old and need to furnish. You may take the Metro to Vermont station then transit the Big blus bus to Santa Monica to enjoy the Calfornia sunshine and beautiful modern environment there. Well about this hotel - decent hotel and value for money. Dinning in little Tokyo will provide you a little surprise cos the food there is good quality and super deal.

In downtown, this hotel shows a great deal of history. It has full athletic club with an indoor pool which is very cool. Tons of sports and sporting facilities. Location is okay to good - not a fan of walking in that area at night but in the day, it's okay. The restaurant and bar was recently done and had good offerings. Breakfast is included in the room rate and overall, the LAAC is a good value. The rooms tend to be on the small side but are well appointed. In downtown, it is a good option.

Room Tip: Ask for an accessible room - they are larger.

The staff is very rude and have 0% customer experience. Upon check-in, I wanted to pay for an upgrade and they informed me there were no extra rooms available. We called after we got into our room and there were rooms available. Why would any business turn down money? Then, my A/C was not working properly and we were able to switch rooms but with 0 customer service. They did not explain parking, which is a headache. Hotel staff is does not go out of there way to assist with anything or explain any amenities. If this is fine for you, stay here, but I expect more from this type/class of a hotel.
I even emailed the Mgr and never received a response.

John4Zo,
Thank you for taking the time submit a review. First I would like to apologize about your experience at our hotel, these issues are unacceptable and will be addressed with my staff. On the day of your arrival we were indeed sold out, but our system was still open, and that is our error. I also apologize about the confusion with parking, and that should have been explained, and I will also ensure that doesnt happen again. We do our best to make sure all of our guests leave happy, so please feel free to contact me so we can discuss this matter. Kind Regards, Mike Brennan

I stayed five nights in this Downtown LA hotel and loved it. It is not the fanciest part of town, but having moved to Pasadena, it is far more interesting and rewarding. The hotel is pretty cool, no beige to be found anywhere only dark and interesting hideaways (at least in restaurant floor). The pool is wonderful; located in an atrium of natural light, it makes exercise almost relaxing. The gym looks well equipped and there is a basketball court and walking track. The rooms are elegant (without reliance on beige tones), expansive and extremely cosy. Staff were helpful, yet not obsequious.

Room Tip: Watch out for rooms that are located right next to the housekeeping...can be a little noisy if wanti...

Pros-
Awesome fitness facility including a 4 Lane 25 yard pool with non-turbulent lane lines and pace clocks.
Sauna, Steam room, and hot tub with surrounding quiet area, and much more.
No tipping policy with service charge added to bill
Very comfortable bed
Pleasant accommodating staff
Cons-
Kind of dicey part of town, surrounding dining establishments closed early
Common areas were a bit warm

Other comments-
If I had been traveling alone this would have been 5 star, but I was with my family at the end of a vacation and my husband was crabby and had problems coping with the cons despite loving the pros.

Room Tip: There is a rooftop deck and they were having a reception the night I was there (Saturday). We were...

The front desk guys were very helpful, the rooms were comfortable, and the gym kicked butt. Be careful when leaving your car out front when checking in! At certain times you'll get a ticket. Loved the full gym. It was all very classy and old school.
