“Contemporary with a touch of history”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

We always loved city life and as we currently don't live in the city we occasionally treat us to it. Staying at The Athletic Club offers you a great location in the historic core of Downtown L.A. where things are changing in a fast pace for the better. We had a nice spacious room, comfortably furnished, a great king-size bed, stationary work-out bike and while facing Hill Street quiet enough for a good night sleep.
The clean bathroom should be equipped with better illumination and a make-up mirror, to be improved. The Hotel offers a lot of sports history, great amenities to work out and you feel the energy and vibes of many decades exploring the different floors. Nice bar, friendly staff members add to the overall pleasure. Breakfast Buffet would improve, by adding a selection of bread and rolls. Disney Hall, L.A Public Library, Museum of Contemporary Art, to name a view sights are all in walking distance, as are some good restaurants. After arrival we parked our car in the adjacent parking structure for the hotel rate of $20 per night and walked everywhere.

Room Tip: Rooms facing direction S. Hill street are not exposed to traffic noise.

We stayed for two nights. We requested a suite but ended up in a regular room. The rooms are fairly good size, bathroom is average in size, bed was comfortable but the lighting was very poor. This is also because the walls are painted in black or dark gray (I can't even tell).

Breakfast buffet and the service provided by the staff in the restaurant were average. They need to improve in that area if they want higher ratings. Front desk staff were helpful.

We had a not quite pleasant experience with the parking attendant. When we were leaving the hotel for the airport, he stopped us and made us wait while they were cleaning the entrance to the parking deck. I understand that they are doing their jobs but we told him a couple of times that we need to be at the airport to catch our flight. He ignored us the first time. Eventually, he let us go the second time but he gave us an angry face. I can tell he was annoyed and we were, too. :-(

Will I stay here again? Not for the price we paid.

I love this hotel, even though it is not particularly luxurious. I have been attending 2-3 meetings a year at this location for the last 10 years, and have always been very pleased. The front desk and bell staff are great (although some of the banquet servers could use a manners review) and the rooms are comfortable. There is a surprisingly good restaurant attached to the hotel also. It is strange because it is primarily an athletic facility, but if you don't mind occasional sharing the elevator with a sweaty man, that is not a problem.

I stayed here for 2 nights in December while attending training in downtown LA. I stayed in a small room with 1 queen bed. The room was small but it was just me so that was no big deal as there was plenty of room for me. Bath room was small but spacious and very clean. Sometimes these older hotel bathrooms are kinda dingy with a slight smell of mold but not this one. Tile bathroom, very clean, and nice. There was a small closet with a safe for your personal belongings and a bath robe. Flat screen TV and a small fridge hidden in the dresser area. The bed was comfortable. For me, the bed is always a big deal when staying in hotels. You have to have a good comfortable bed with good pillows to be able to rest. These passed the test. The view sucked but I wasnt in the room for much of the day. I faced alot of the neighboring buildings. The hotel itself is historic. There are pictures of former athletes that had trained there. There is a nice size swimming pool for laps and a small complementary gym for guests. Also, they give you a free breakfast buffet which was pretty good. Just beware- you cant talk on your phone while at the dinning room. Over all a very nice stay and would stay again. Not a place for families really even though its centrally located in the heart of downtown LA. Parking is $20 a day. The decor is old school cigar bar type. Very nice. Staff was very nice as well. Definitely would stay again!

This hotel is not a typical hotel. As a private club, it feels more like a sporting centre that happens to have some hotel rooms on the 12th floor. It has beautiful & historic areas filled with sports memorabilia and antique furniture. There are also a lot of areas dedicated to sport and recreation, the most favourite to our 15 year old son being the full sized basketball court! He decided this was by far the best hotel we stayed at during our 4 week trip to the states & spent as much time as he could on the court. We only spent one night at the hotel, to break up our flight from the East Coast before returning to Australia. We were attending an NBA game at the Staples centre and the hotel's location enabled us to walk there.
The rooms are lovely and the breakfast is fine.
Unfortunately we did not find the reception staff particularly friendly or helpful. The fellow on reception when we checked out, disputed a prior arrangement we had confirmed with management and was rude when this was explained to him, and reluctant to honour it.
Also, the hotel offered to arrange a town car to take us to LAX. We were told it would be $50 & that the driver was called Rene, who would accept credit card. We were picked up by El Salvador (?), who charged us $55 and did not accept credit card. We did not have enough cash with us as it was the end of our trip, and this proved very embarrassing. The driver was not too impressed. Had we been given accurate information from hotel staff, we would have ensured we had enough cash, or organised a taxi.
Apart from this, I would recommend this hotel, particularly if you like to shoot some hoops, swim some laps, or hang out in the gym. It is charming & unique, even if a little quirky!

This was a very old hotel right in the middle of the jewelery district in central LA but very good for walking around some of the sights. We only stayed the one night and breakfast was very good and our room was clean and quiet. When we say weird - the hotel still has the spas and athletic club that you could use as a guest there, but we think that there are a lot of people that actually live there also. But all in all it was an experience and quite good value.

Room Tip: Usually choose a room that's not near the lifts or ice-making machines.
