“Good location only. others poor”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

stayed one night last week. Except location good, others are really not feeling good. Bed sheet is much moisture inside. Towels same much moisture. these makes us uncomfortable. Window air conditioner noises. No breakfast. Only the staff was good & efficient. when booking it says $10/night for parking but they didn't ask this when we checked out. Parking lot is very tight & thanks god we got the last parking space. To be honest, it's worse than a cheap motel with its half price.
Won't be back any more for any reason.

The hotel is located in k-town. I took flyaway (flyway) bus to union square $7 (one way). And then took the subway to Wilshire/Normandy station $1.5. And 10 mins walk from the station. A Korean shopping mall is a block away, very cheap and handy to get food and others, but they may not speak English at all. Very handy to take subway to universal studio and Hollywood, but need to take an hour plus AMTARK($24 return) from union square to Fullerton and change the bus at dock 1. And u will not be squeezed if u return by same route at nite after the firework in Disney. But have to ensure that u will not miss AMTARK train back to join square and train back to Normandy. Good place to stay considering under $100 per nite. A bit noisy at nite and no fridge in the room.

We stayed here for 1 night (thankfully) for some an interview at USC. The first room reeked of pee and we later found out that the air conditioning was completely broken. The second room we got transferred to had a closet that wasn't even setup (tools and shelves just left there) and most of the furniture seemed to be missing. The walls are super thin and it was just an overall terrible experience.

My little brother came into town and I needed a place to keep him for a few nights while I was away at work. This place is located in what seems like the middle of a neighborhood but if you go looking around, you'll notice a few motels around the corner that don't seem to stack up to what the Shelter hotel has to offer. I think this place is well worth the value if you're not high maintenance and looking for a straight forward, conveniently located place to stay and keep your things that's easy access (with the metro station just 3 blocks away) to the rest of central LA. Very safe neighborhood.

& Pet friendly too! Which is always a plus in my book. The ping pong room is an added bonus if your not ready to hit the sack just yet or jump into the pool if you're looking to cool off.

Aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. Feels like a home away from home. Lots of bars or restaurants to discover right around the corner.

I'd recommend to friends and family to come stay here in the future for sure.

We stayed for 5 nights over the July 4th holiday. The neighborhood felt safe, even when returning to the hotel after midnight, and it was extremely convenient to public transportation. (It is in fact possible to get around LA without a car, if you have enough time, as well as the inclination to look up bus and light rail routes.) The rooms are indeed minimalist: we put our clothes on a strange little book shelf, there was an open "closet" with just three hangers, but the bedside tables also had shelves and there was ample storage in the bathroom. The windows can be opened, there is a work desk and chair, and the wifi worked well. The king-sized bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept on, and it was dead quiet during the night. The room was very large, and what it lacked in the usual furniture it made up for in space (for example, we could have easily kept all our luggage underneath a bench at the end of the bed.) The pool area was cute, with fake grass and bean bag chairs, although the water was cold and it looked as though it would rarely be in the sun, being situated partly under the building overhang. It was a relaxing place to sit for a spell, as were the chairs and couch in the reception area. The overall level of service is about what you would expect for the price ($99 a night), although one desk clerk was indeed quite rude, as so many other reviewers have noted. I might have felt differently if we had had the misfortune to encounter him upon check-in, instead of the next day. I would nevertheless not hesitate to recommend this hotel, and I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Our room did face an apartment building, which had the usual daytime noise (one of the units was bei...

This hotel was booked for friends visiting from Italy primarily due to the hardwood floors which reduces problems for people with allergies. Room was clean and beds were good. There is a pool and a ping pong table, but not really anywhere comfortable to just sit and chat or gather a few people. It was easy for my friends to get breakfast either at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf going south or several bakeries going north. Hotel is easy distance from the Wilshire Metro Station, however, everyone knows LA is a driving town. Without a car, the hotel is a bit of an inconvenience. Location in K-Town is perfectly safe and the price is right ($99/night.) My friends stayed there two times and we met 4 front desk guys. 3 of them were helpful, accommodating, and cheerful. The 4th had a big attitude and was rude.
I would recommend this hotel as long as you understand there are not a lot of extras - it is a bit bare bones, and that you have a car if you are a tourist.
