Hollywood Historic Hotel
Ranked #113 of 354 Hotels in Los Angeles
Reviewed 19 July 2014

It somewhat pains me to write this review, as the staff was incredibly friendly and the hotel itself definitely had it's charm. My girlfriend and I had been traveling for over a week in SoCAL and had stayed in 4 star resorts and spas, so it was time to tighten up the budget for the last part of the sojourn. HHH had a nightly rate of around 100 dollars and free parking(A rarity in LA), so alas 3 nights were booked. My initial impression was not great. The area surrounding the hotel is not the greatest in LA, but far from the worst. Primarily Hispanic speaking, relatively clean and safe, with a great laundromat close by. A few ambulance noises but otherwise quiet. Let's break things down

The Good

Nice, Attentive Staff
1920's style elevator
view of the Hollywood sign from our room
10 minutes away from just about every major Hollywood/LA point, 20 minutes from Santa Monica/Venice
Visible, Effective AC
Free Parking! Seriously

The Bad
Small Room
No HD BOX. Yet another in a seemingly endless list of hotels that invests in a High Definition TV, but does not invest in HD BOXES(And I presume HDMI Cables), thus rendering the HDTV irrelevant.
No Ice anywhere in the hotel, no laundry services provided, no restaurant in the hotel, one vending machine with an incredibly limited selection
No way to purchase Pay Per View movies.

The Ugly
The bed was awful. I cringe at the thought of sleeping there again.
The bathroom is tiny, difficult to maneuver and most criminal of all, DOES NOT HAVE A SHOWER CURTAIN. A minor inconvenience, you say? Go to your bathroom, tear it down, take a shower, and revisit this posting...

All in all, I suppose this is a nice hotel and it is practical if you intend on staying in LA for a night or two and have seen the city before. If you plan on staying in the area for longer and/or it is your first LA adventure, do yourself a favor and shell out the extra cash or jeopardize your credit for a nicer, more luxurious place in West Hollywood.

Room Tip: Request a room on the third floor, from wherein the Hollywood sign is visible.

I have to say that Hollywood Historic Hotel was a bit of a let-down. I know it wasn't supposed to be luxurious, but decent is what I was expecting.

Location: close to Universal Studios and other attractions but the area itself looks like a ghetto.

View: yes, the Hollywood sign can be seen from the windows, but what they forget to mention is a Gas station opposite the hotel, and in truth, you can barely see the sign, it's so far. So what you're looking at is the gas station, and if you squint, you'll see a blurry Hollywood sign far in the distance.

Service: OK, nothing to rave about. The guy was professional, but didn't make us feel particularly welcomed. He looked sort of tired or bored.

The room: this is, alas, the worst part. First, the smell. You know that stale smell of old people's homes? That's what it smelled like: stale fabric. The room is tiny, the decor - minimal, the bed - super hard (why??). It was clean I guess, but the carpet looked so worn out and dirty, I didn't want to touch it barefoot.

Best feature: free parking and the foyer.

Turned up no found it very easily. It has free parking. It's very old school hollywood inside and the rooms were fit for purpose. We could see the Hollywood sign in the distance from our window. You need a car to get about as there's nothing around other than a petrol station and a couple of little shops. It suited us for 2 nights.

We made a last minute booking to stay in Hollywood, rather than relying of cabs for a night out. I read somewhere that this used to be an old apartment building, and was converted into a hotel. It definitely had an apartment building look and feel about. This is an old building, so a little bit worn around the edges. The halls were adorned with lots of different black and white images of Hollywood's Hey day, so if you love the old Hollywood era - you'll have fun wandering around the corridors to look at the images.

The room looked a little bit tired, but it was clean and the shower was high pressure. The rooms have Direct TV and Air Conditioning and basic coffee making facilities.

This hotel is central to all of the Hollywood highlights, and only a short drive to the main part of Melrose Avenue where all of the shops and restaurants are clustered.

Not much in the immediate area .. a gas station on the opposite side of the street is a good location for late night snacks and drinks.

Paramount and Raleigh Studios are a couple of blocks away.

Nice view on Hollywood sign. Sights not in walking distance. But free parking available. Very good cafe next door! Highgly recommended for breakfast. Wifi did not work on 2 out of 3 days. You should not rely on wifi provided.

This hotel is very central and about 500 metres from Paramount Studios, which was on our list of must see places. The hotel is clean though a little worn at the edges but has a few really good point; the view has the Hollywood sign in clear view, at night you can see the Griffith Observatory lit up, a large car park at the rear of the hotel which has CCTV. The staff were friendly and helpful and readily gave information. Lift was adequate for three people with their suitcases and arrived quickly. The rooms were clean and had a fridge which was very useful, the bathrooms were very clean and hot water always there. We turned on the ceiling fan on the first day but couldn't switch it off so we were left with the air continually circulating plus the sound it made. Surprisingly, it took us no time to get used to the drone of the motor and we slept well every night. The hotel is on Melrose Avenue and there were small shops within walking distance. Friendly feel in this area and a couple of coffee shops to sit outside and drink copious amounts of coffee.

Room Tip: Walk to Paramount Studios.....worth it!

I was breezing through LA on a larger road trip and decided to stay here for its proximity to Santa Monica Pier and Hollywood. The hotel itself is clean, quiet, and a good value for the quality room and service. The location is not entirely convenient for public transportation but it is VERY close to Paramount if you want to go on a tour of the studio lot. Pretty close to Hollywood sites. The hotel itself beats the location in my opinion. I would recommend it for someone else in a similar boat as me - limited time in LA (ie 1-2 nights). If you're looking to set up camp in LA for a few days, look elsewhere unless you have a car. Also, parking is free and safe in their own lot!
