What a fun LA getaway!. Loved the giant black foot in the bathroom! Huge hotel suite Decor very minimalist sixties, LA trendy. Bed very firm to hard. Bathtub so huge Shaq would be comfortable sharing it with a friend. Staff friendly and professional. Bar on the roof top,is my favorite to watch the LA sunset. Love the giant fireplace, the waitresses in 80's sports outfits, the black and white movie projected on the building opposite, which you can view from water matresses in pods, or from the pool. Best view of the LA skyline and with a great cocktail too, or perhaps some German bratwurst and beer from the beer garden, also on the roof! A must for a true trendy LA experience!

I stayed there for two nights and it was ok. The first night I was on my own the second with my husband. The staff is friendly and helpful the rooms are spacious and clean. What strikes me is why you would have a glass box (fully transparent) in the room serving as your bathroom/toilet. If you r on your own fair enough, but I did not comfortable sharing this room with my husband and upgraded to a room with a separate toilet for the second night. This hotel is fine for a leisure trip maybe not for business.

This is really a 3.5. The main reason it is not a 4 (definitely not a 3) is because it is a little too cool for a business trip. The downstairs restaurant is adequate, but the main focus is on the roof top terrace (bar and pool), which is spectacular. It was really pleasant working on the terrace, which is quiet in the day.

Whilst it is a party hotel at weekends the rooms are quiet, my room was near the lift and I slept well all three nights.

The gym is small, but well stocked.

The staff are polite and helpful.

Very clean and pleasant rooms, although the shower in the bedroom (behind a glass screen) was a little weird. I'm not sure I would enjoy sharing this room, not over private.

Room Tip: get reasonable high up. It was quiet so being near a lift was not too much of a problem.

This was the second Standard I stayed in one trip to LA.
Excellent standard if you like boutique minimalist hotels. If you don't like pool parties and you want Beverley hills luxury give it a miss. Read reviews and if I listened to them I wouldn't come here. Glad I stayed here. Great end to a trip

Room Tip: Try not get room in front of lift if that sort of thing bothers you.

We daftly surmised that the Standard downtown would be a fun and unique-like staycation for us to hang out with friends this last July 4th.
We booked the reservation via Jetsetter.
I mean we live minutes away, what could go wrong?
To begin, there was a loud and drunken daytime DJ roof top pool party that was supposedly to last until 8 p.m. The event was so jammed packed with young, caustically drunk-beyond-measure revelers, that we were uncomfortable finishing our drinks by the pool or elsewhere on the roof. We wanted to relax, but apparently couldn't, so we decided to go hang out in the room and elsewhere for the rest of the day.
When we initially returned to our room we were able to watch from our window a fight break out between two sloshed pool party patrons in the valet parking lot below. The two were so drunk that they fought each other, then passed out together on the hood of a parked car, later to be drug away by embarrassed departing friends. It was good solid Standard entertainment.
We stayed in a "Wow" suite, which was spacious and outfitted in slightly outdated modern decor.
I found the bed comfortable.
The bathroom was enormous, with a separate enclosed, private toilet; a monster sized bath and accompanying gigantic shower; and was covered ceiling to floor, again, in fairly passé square tile.
The mesh room dividers were a cool feature of the long and somewhat narrow studio-type "junior suite", as was the intricate lighting scheme of both the bath and main room.
The decent room along with the surprisingly extensive and affordable room service menu and friendly wait staff were among the only reasons I'm able to give this review 2 stars.
We ordered room service three times: lunch, late night and breakfast, and each time we were pleasantly surprised by the service and selection.
So back to the mess.
Night came, some friends arrived and we decided to venture back upstairs. We had to get everyone wrist bands, a very club like experience, and the bouncers on our way up to the roof were so "over it" and unpleasant that a friend aptly remarked that' "they make you feel guilty about being a guest here".
The rooftop pool and bar areas were full of sadly wasted people, some could barely move after a day of hard binge drinking. A couple was engaging in blatant god knows what on one of the pod waterbed "cabanas" and our excusably bitter cocktail waitress, after we ordered nearly $200 dollars of premium drinks, ordered and charged us 5 more drinks we didn't ask for, then disappeared with our ID's for nearly an hour. We decided to just take the drinks and leave so as we searched for our server to get our ID's back and leave this terrible mistake, we were lucky enough to witness a classy young couple have sex in the wet, smelly men's bathroom, only to be caught by security and leave behind, as testament to their deed, the girl's panties / bathing suit bottom on the men's toilet stall floor . As we continued to search for our waitress, we were able to watch the panties in question accumulate pool water and other fun bar / pool dirty men's bathroom liquid and refuse.
Wow was not only referring to our room type.
We found our bar wench, finally, signed and left with our full unwanted and expensive drinks, only to be ordered by another friendly bouncer to dump out our drinks. We're just going to our room, we paid for and didn't order these drinks sir, but to no avail, into the planter they went.
Good times.
Coming to this hotel was a mistake. a big one.
I'm not one to enjoy writing negative trip advisor reviews, but guys, this is truly unacceptable.
The raucous pool party apparently continued throughout the weekend we were told, and all summer as I see some employees proudly boast. The promoters must pay the hotel handsomely, because they are, as it appears, what matters most to this establishment.
It was sadly apparent that guest service was way down the list of the hotels priorities.
We've considered staying in the Standard in my old stomping grounds of the East Village in Manhattan, but oi vey. I just can't.
Below the standard it turns out.

We're so sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Our pool parties are very popular during the summer and it sounds like you joined us on a really busy weekend. We are addressing your comments about the service issues and appreciate them being brought to our attention.

Pressure washing the car park area outside the hotel at street level with the noisiest machinery ever assembled, for almost two-hours from 8pm on a Monday night. Really?

Granted it may be difficult to pressure wash the car park during the day when it is full of cars but there has to be another way?

I've been trying to watch a movie and it sounds as if there's a lawnmower convention going on outside --- it's almost 10pm!!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the review and we're sorry that you experienced noise from the parking lot whilst trying to relax and watch your movie. Unfortunately, the lot is not owned by the hotel so we don't have a say in when the cleaning is done but they do try and do it before it gets too late and night and not too early in the mornings. We do supply ear-plugs in case of any disturbances from outside for our guests but obviously that doesn't help when you're watching t.v! Sorry for the noise Paul and we hope you come back again soon.

I'm writing from the room because I'm annoyed that I don't even have a glass or cup or some kind of container to have a drink of water. To pay $350/night and stay in a room with no nightstands for my glasses, phone, charger, hair clip, water (oh sorry, no way to contain the water) is worth writing about IMHO. The decor may have have been hipster about 16 years ago but the rooms and hallways are definitely looking dated, worn, and tired. The desktop is formica and the "decor" is non-existent, not minimalist.

I thought the Mr. Bubbles for sale was especially interesting since there was no bathtub in the sanitarium tiled room that had a small Home Depot shower head in the middle of it.

Overall, a huge disappointment. Obviously a hotel that has seen much better days a long time ago.

Room Tip: Lower rooms will get all the vibrations from the Ping-Pong Club and make you think you're sleepi...

I'm sorry to hear that your stay wasn't to our standards. All of our rooms usually have water glasses in them so we are looking into why yours was missing.
We understand that our minimalist decor isn't to everyone's taste and we try to portray this accurately on our website.
Many of our rooms feature oversized bath-tubs (hence the Mr. Bubbles) and these can be selected via our website or through chatting to our reservations team.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you experience any problems during your stay so we can assist you and make you more comfortable while you are here.
