Description: The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

“Meh”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

The food was bland an not flavorful. Both my appetizer and entrees seemed devoid of flavor. The sushi tasted frozen and washed out, and something left my stomach less than settled after my dinner. The space itself lacked character, and the service was fine though they tended to disappear for long periods of time. Overall, not impressed.

“Very good!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

Great place! This place is busy! People seem to like coming here just for an evening out. We sat in the lounge area which was very modern and chill, and had meals off the happy hour menu. The sushi rolls here are great! Great atmosphere, decent prices, good food, great music. I would come here again!

“Great food and service.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

The Chaya menu is so unique that you can visit this restaurant many, many times. The food is really very good. And always consistent. And the service is very good. You always feel welcomed and the attention to detail is very good.

“Great steak and black cod”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014 via mobile

I had black cod as main course and yellow tails as my starter. I am looking for black cod outside of japan and was very glad able to find the dish in CA. I had the same dish in San Diego but it was not great. One thing I do have to say it is better than what I had in a Japanese restaurant in san diego but I do find it is a little bit too much soy source on the dish which makes it less good than what I had in tokyo. My husband had the steak and it was very good. I think the wine is ok and I was expecting something better. Fun ambience otherwise.

“Oldie but a goodie”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014 credit card Amex Cardmember Review

My friends and I frequented Chaya Venice in the 90s. Having recently moved back to California we thought a trip to old haunts for a bit of nostalgia and happy hour sushi were in order. Pleasantly surprised to find the same great atmosphere food and drink specials. The happy hour sushi in the bar is still a great deal. The only thing lacking was our friendly regular bartender.
