Interesting menu that takes awhile to understand. There's a lot of stuff in the salads and the choices seem strange, but the food was really good. Interesting beers on tap!

It’s quickly becoming a trend for chefs to make a name for themselves by serving delectable fare via food truck before opening an actual brick and mortar location. It has worked for the likes of Chef Roy Choi of Kogi, Andrew Gruel of Slapfish, and Jason Quinn (who first made a name for himself with The Lime Truck) now at The Playground DTSA. Recently, Quinn’s Lime Truck partner, Chef Daniel Shemtob, opened TLT Food (The Lime Truck, get it?) in Westwood Village and taco-lovin’ fans have been delighted.

Shemtob and Quinn made names for themselves after winning "The Great American Food Truck Race" with their Lime Truck. Walk into TLT Food and you’ll immediately notice the communal tables and its kick back atmosphere.

According to Shemtob, the concept was simple: deliver amazing food, use quality ingredients, make things from scratch, and make the experience great from start to finish. TLT Food is a fast-casual, chef-driven restaurant where you’ll find all the favorite items from their popular food trucks (there are four of ‘em currently roaming around town).

During our recent palate-pleasing visit for dinner, we started with the decadent and outrageous Steak Fries. This bad boy is made with marinated steak, Asian slaw, homemade wontons, and cilantro chimichurri. This is the perfect starter item made for sharing. It’s too big and gluttonous for one person, yet you will find yourself fighting with friends for extra servings. Pair it with one of their fine beers (their beer menu changes seasonally) or from their affordable wine selection.

If you’re looking for something a little healthier, fear not, the TLT Food Veggies menu is first-rate. Start with the Roasted Corn—a half cob with Chipotle-honey aioli and Cotija cheese. It’s hearty and tasty.

One of our favorite menu dishes (and I mean from the entire menu) is the Roasted Beet Salad, prepared with roasted red beets, pickled golden beets, crumbled goat cheese, arugula, toasted almonds, olive oil, sea salt, and lime juice. It’s light and savory and just plain delicious. The Blistered Bok Choy with toasted peanuts, ponzu, and sesame is also a nice guilt-free item but guilty pleasures are what it’s all about here, and that means tacos!

There’s a reason why The Lime Truck won "The Great American Food Truck Race" and that’s also why you’re probably interested…tacos! Start with the Ultimate Taco—made with 12-hour pulled pork, Cotija cheese, homemade guacamole and Chiptole-honey cabbage. It’s called “ultimate” for a reason.

The Beef Short Rib Taco, prepared with braised beef short rib, crispy onions, Horseradish crema, and arugula, is also a winner, as is the Pork Belly Adobo Taco—made with braised pork belly, tomatillo salsa, Sriracha, and cilantro.

But why stop there? The Sweet & Spicy Steak Taco, made with marinated steak, Asian slaw, and homemade wontons (ala the Steak Fries) is tops too.

Looking for tacos a little out of the ordinary? Go for the Seared Ahi Tuna Taco, made with seared sushi grade Ahi tuna, Chipotle-honey slaw, lime-Sambal sauce, and cilantro, along with the Mr. Potato Taco, prepared with Dutch yellow potatoes, tomatillo salsa, and cilantro chimichurri. They’re both ever-so tasty.

And if you want something a little heartier (as if the Steak Fries weren’t enough), the Beef Short Rib Quesadilla, made with braised beef short rib, cheese blend, tomatillo salsa, and Chipotle-honey Aioli, will get the job done in style.

If you’re eating on your own, I say order the Roasted Beet Salad and a couple of tacos, or the quesadilla. If you’re sharing with friends, which is the best way to go, get the Steak Fries, and split a couple of tacos or the quesadilla if you’re going for broke. No need to track a truck down all over town or wait in some long time, get the goods directly at TLT Food.

“Oh my, so unusually delicious!”
Reviewed 18 January 2013

This restaurant took the place of The Stand, and wow, is it great! My son and I had dinner here (he'd come the night before) and it was so good. I had the steak fries, and could not believe that they managed to keep the fries crispy and distinct, with the steak on top. Yumm... My son had the fish tacos and beet salad - not enough volume for him so he went back for another dish. My second visit, at lunch, gave me the opportunity to try the blue crab grilled cheese sandwich. Tasty, but I'm still craving that steak fries plate... Remember that you can't have alcohol while eating at the outside tables. Also, I would encourage the owners to use washable plates, etc. in order to reduce waste. The limeade drink I had at lunch was really very sweet. By the way, they do deliver. I believe the delivery charge is just $4.00 if you're in the neighborhood.
