Good for: Business meetings, Bar Scene, Special Occasion Dining, Groups, Romantic
Dining options: Dinner, After-hours, Breakfast, Reservations
Dining style: Casual Elegant
Cross street: Franklin Avenue
Transit: Metro Red Line to Hollywood & Highland. Walk west down Hollywood Blvd turn right on Orange and cross at the light on Franklin. Once you cross at the light go left and turn right at sycamore going up the hill. It is a very steep hill so walking in dress shoes or in the dark are not recommended. We suggest calling a cab at the bottom of the hill.
Description: Yamashiro - translated to "mountain palace" - broke ground in 1911 and was completed in 1914 as a residence for the Bernheimer brothers. Housing a priceless collection of Asian treasures, the building was designed as a replica of a palace located in the mountains near Kyoto, Japan. During the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, Yamashiro served as the ultra-exclusive hang-out for the "Club of the Four Hundred": the era's most famous and influential stars and movie moguls. The structure and its grounds served as a boy's military school and later apartments before being acquired in 1948 by the Thomas O. Glover, who discovered the beauty beneath the disrepair and refurbished the space. Currently owned by Thomas Y. Glover, Yamashiro is still flourishing over 60 years later as an Asian-inspired Los Angeles institution.

Lovely location, brilliant food, would go back! This restaurant was recommended by our travel agent as we were staying nearby. Big mistake to try to walk up the hill, though it helped to give us a good appetite. Great for a special occasion or if you just feel like spoiling yourself.

I attended a wedding at Yamashiro and it was an amazing place to have it. It is a old pagoda style building on top of a hill in Hollywood and the view inside and out is unforgettable. The food, service and décor fantastic. It really feels like and old world authentic experience. I will definitely go again.

I came here on a trip to Los Angeles. I was refereed to this place by a dear friend and it met EVERY one of my expectations. I don't even know where to begin. The view was absolutely breathtaking. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Food was wonderful, some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant and without a doubt the best Japanese food I've ever tasted. I will definitely be back.

I chose Yamashiro (after consulting reviews on Trip Advisor) as the venue for a special birthday meal for my wife. We greatly enjoyed visiting this historic building and its immediate surroundings and the view over Hollywood Blvd and LA at night was spectacular. The meal was good...Not outstanding...But satisfying, nonetheless. The 'regular' coffee however was disappointing...Tepid and with no real taste.

Yamashiro is a very unique Japanese restaurant. It is surrounded by Japanese gardens and the building itself has a Japanese look to it.
The fish is absolutely delicious.

Hello,
Thank you for the positive review. It sounds as though you were enamored by the ambiance and architecture. I would like to clarify that while the architecture and name of Yamashiro is Japanese-inspired, that the cuisine is Asian-inspired Californian. Hope to see you soon!
