Venice Beach Hostel
Reviewed 2 March 2014

THE ADDRESS IS NOT TRUE: The address they put on the website does not match the actual address. We stayed for a long time looking for the hostel with GPS and we were only able to find after we called to the hostel and got the real address.

THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT IS A HOSTEL: the house has no sign with the name of the hostel or even any indication that there runs a hostel. The frontage is of a normal house. The owner told us that is a residential area so it could´t have anything to indicate that there works a hostel. The wrong location on the site, lack of indication of a hostel and the appearance of the place made us wonder if this place was in fact a regular/legal hostel.

15 MIN WALK TO THE BEACH, NOT TRUE: They said it was 15min walk to the beach, when actually we took at least 30min.

WEIRD PRIVATE ROOM: I asked for a private room with private bathroom and our room had no separation between the bedroom and bathroom. And in the bathroom had no shower (only a bath tub) . Nobody told us that I had to use the toilet in front of my boyfriend or bathing in a tub where several unknown persons usually bathe.

BAD HYGIENE: my friend woke up scratching.

NOTHING FRIENDLY BREAKFAST: breakfast only lasts 1 hour (9 - 10am), so, if you want to leave early to enjoy the day in town, give up breakfast. And also, if it's 10am and you are still having breakfast, the owner starts removing everything from the table rudely without say a word.

RUDE SERVICE: Are two responsible for the hostel, a man and a woman. The man is very friendly. The woman received us very well when we just arrived, but shortly after (coincidentally after we make the payment), she started treating us rudely and always seemed grumpy.

VERY EXPENSIVE AS TO QUALITY: After this experience we chose to search for hotels (not hostels) in the other cities we visited. We found excellent hotels, that were cheaper and definitely much better than this hostel.

I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this Venice Beach Hostel

So disgusting. We left early after being eaten by bedbugs. You pay for a bed, but you get a mattress on the floor. You pay to be near the beach, you're actually a 25 minute walk away. You pay to stay, you end up paying a taxi t get you the hell out of there. Vile beyond your worst nightmares. Total abject squalor. Just don't.

Room Tip: Sleep in the yard. It ill be cleaner than the hostel.

Two girl friends and I stayed here as part of our 1 month California road trip. Great vibe, great people... Only 15 mins walk from the amazing Venice beach, and also great staff who couldn't be more helpful!

I am an older traveler, female, art lover, and wanted an inexpensive private room in Los Angeles as base for museum visits. BOOKING FOR THIS HOSTEL IS CONFUSING AS THERE ARE TWO HOSTELS WITH THE SAME NAME. I stayed in the one on Pacific Avenue which has a passable reputation; the other one gets nightmare reviews and I would avoid it at all cost.
THE HOSTEL
The hostel smells from years of cooking in the large communal kitchen, and there is initially a kind of depressing feeling (for me) upon entering the property. My private room was a little "down" feeling, the kitchen promised has no frige so is not really a kitchen. There are colorful fun murals all around inside the hostel, large comfy communal areas. I am sure I could have found a better room for the price if I took the time to look (I like the look of the places overlooking the beach). But I did not have time, and settled into this hostel, and even found myself looking forward to returning to it in the evening. I don't know why it grew on me, but I think it is the local culture which permeates the hostel that saved it. They are so down to earth, kind to the large homeless population, a good vibe.
THE LOCATION
I loved the location on Pacific Ave....calculated chaos on the boardwalk one block away is a magnet for characters and makes people watching there on the level of India. The beach backdrop, nearby canals for sunset strolling, made this location work for me. I especially appreciated the acceptance of homeless there who are treated with more dignity by locals than anywhere I can think of in US. The shops along the boardwalk are varied, amusing, and will suprise you with some quality items like authentic Native American crafts. Lime green marijuana stores are amusing. Posters of rapsters. You never know what you will find from shop to shop.
SUMMARY
I have stayed in far far superior hostels. So why did I do ok at Venice Beach Hostel (slept well, loved sketching in the big bed)? Mind over matter? A fool viewing the world through rosy glasses? Or..is it really great? You decide and let me know please!

Room Tip: Private room preferable I would think...did not see dorms.

Stayed here recently as we were only in LA for couple of days so just wanted something cheap while we did a bit of sightseeing. Great hostel, good to have breakfast included. Staff are maybe what I should've expected for LA accommodation (a bit too cool). Excellent common area but not good if you're a non-smoker as thats where everyone smokes. Overall facilities are good for backpackers and I'd probably stay here again. Beds were pretty good and rooms very clean. Some great artwork too. Would be good if they kicked the smokers outside so everyone can breath!
Go down the road to Danny's for dinner. Its a hostel also but as we didn't stay there i'm not sure what the rooms are like...can say the food was unreal! Then get in a cab and go to Santa Monica to check out the pier and shop on the promenade!
