Located in a nondescript SF Valley mall - between an electronics store and a chiropractor - the San Carlo is a family-run deli without peer. Pasquale (the son) is generally behind the counter while other members of the Roberto clan are taking orders or yelling to the pizza chef in back. From about 11:30 to 2 it's organized chaos. Many of the nearby companies (mostly computer-related) call in take-out orders - sandwiches, salads, pizza, soups, whatever.

There are just a few tables and everyone shares space. Not a place for long conversations, it's more like sit down, shut up and eat. One other thing: You grab a drink out of the cooler and pay for everything when you leave! Honest.

An ex-New Yorker who has found his heaven. This place is classic Italian complete with characters who make you feel like family the second you walk in the door. The bread is made daily and if you close your eyes and bite into it, you could swear your in Naples or Rome. Same with the Eggplant Parm, Cheese Ravioli and don't get me started on the sandwiches. You have to try this place, but be warned, from 12:00 to 1:00 it's a mad house with customers and once you eat there you will be craving stuff like an addict.

This is a small store where you can find delicious subs, focaccia, and pizza to go, as well as take-home groceries, all Italian of course. They have a great selection of cheeses and cold cuts at reasonable prices, and their freshly baked bread is great too. San Carlo's Deli is better than any in-store deli section and much cheaper. Their "panzerotti" and "focaccie" are a must!

Very authentic place! Great food and real high quality Italian products. The location is good but the table seating arrangement is small and limited. It's best to grab your food to go. Also no public restroom is available. I will be back.

The San Carlo Italian Deli used to be in Panorama City until the civil insurrection of 1992 because some idiot(s) torched the place. It reopened several years later in the north San Fernando Valley on Mason Ave. Now, it might look like a typical Italian deli, but it's not. Everyone is treated like family, even total strangers. It would take me too long to explain the whole story. Here's what you need to know: "I need a San Carlos Special at least once a month." Once you have one, you'll be hooked too.
