“Great location, friendly staff”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

We stayed here for a week over xmas and it was a great place to stay. The staff were very friendly, especially the breakfast lady.

The place is old and tired BUT you are staying in the heart of the action, surrounded by places to dine out, shopping, things to see, a short walk to the subway and so on and all for a very reasonable price.

The breakfast is sparce but enjoyable and we were able to take some extra fruit for the days travels.

The room is surprisingly spacious and well equipped. The bed was comfy and the Kitchenette well equipped. Located behind the Hollywood & Highland centre can make it a bit noisy particularly early morning (6amish) as deliveries are arriving and so on.

Would not hesitate to stay here again.

We booked this hotel in the middle of Hollywood after reading lots of great reviews. We knew it wouldnt be fancy but we didnt expect it to be this bad. I have stayed in many terrible places in the world and this hotel is overpriced. I would probably pay USD 70/night for it.
The walls are thinner than paper thin. If you want to listen to a shouting match between the rooms around you to shut up in the middle of the night, this is the place you want to be. The rooms are in dire need of an update and a lick of paint, and they wouldnt be so bad. They were spotless though, that I have to give them and the staff were extremely friendly. We travelled with a family with 2 kids and we didnt expect to get complaints already at 6pm due to the noise they were making in the swimming pool. The hotel is in the middle of Hollywood - its not exactly a quiet area. There was also not enough room for us to eat breakfast in the breakfast room and had to take what we wanted on a tray to our rooms. We booked for 4 nights but left after 1 night. I wouldnt recommend this hotel.

Sadly I see that our hotel did not meet with your approval. Let me respond to each of your many allegations.

Due to being in a most central, popular, in demand area with not enough hotels, over the years several hotels (5 out of 11) in our immediate vicinity are small converted apartment buildings (one of those is actually rated #1, even higher than we are). Those of coarse were built with long term tenants in mind who would we respectful of their neighbors as they had to live with them long term. Of those 5 we are the newest with a 1960 construction and a 1985 conversion. Sure next to some of the high end hotels we are less fancy but I am sure if you saw the improvements we make each year you would be impressed.

We cannot control who stays next to you of course so that sometimes is a bit of a problem. Had we been aware that you are having this issue with another room we would have been able to help in asking them to be quiet, we could have moved you the next day etc. However according to our records no complaint was registered. We try our best to accommodate our guests and try to insure that they all have a quiet stay. For example we have a “no party policy” which does not allow outside visitors into the hotel after 9 p.m. and we are strict regarding the noise level between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

We want all our guests to enjoy their stay and are delighted when the pool is being used and enjoyed especially by children. Sometimes children can get noisy around a pool and if we have a complaint then we will ask the children to be a little quieter. I am sorry if you were offended as it wasn’t meant that way.

Our breakfast area is small, there are only 12 seats. However as you mentioned we offer trays for our guests to take the breakfast to another one of our other areas…a) all our rooms have nice dining tables and chairs, b) we have another sitting area by the pool, another in the patio in front of the hotel and one on the roof garden area. Besides the trays we also offer brown paper bags for those who want to take breakfast with them on the road.

You said we were overpriced and that you would only pay USD70 per night. Actually you did not pay very much more than that. The couple with two children had a suite (2 room apartment) with two queen size beds, kitchen, dining table and outdoor patio and paid $124. You actually paid only $109 and were upgraded to our Deluxe King + Sofa Suite (3 room apartment) with a king bed in the bedroom, living room furniture and pull out sofa in the living room, full kitchen and dining room and 2 flat screen TVs. You each had a car so you did each pay another $10 for parking which is also very reasonable. Considering our location, our impeccable cleanliness, friendly staff (all things that happily you did like), the free light continental breakfast and free hi speed wireless internet access I do not know where you would get a better value!

Our paint is always being attended to as we have a full time painter in addition to a full time maintenance man (for a small 39 room hotel), we will check the rooms you stayed in however. Lastly this is not a quiet area. It is in the center of the action with a huge hotel, a shopping mall, the famous Dolby Theater (Oscars) and the famous Chinese Theater right next door to us. However at night it does quiet down as evidenced by many reviewers.

Not every hotel is right for every customer. Still I am sad that you did not have a good experience with us. I would have liked a chance to make it better. We offered to move you to another room but you were determined to leave. For the inconvenience you suffered I do apologize and hope you found a more suitable accommodation for the 3 days you cut short at our hotel.

I am convinced that given our location, our rates are reasonable, that we have an outstanding staff and that our hotel is well-maintained, clean and secure

Sincerely,

Joe Blum, Owner

I really didn't know what to expect when me and my friends came to stay here. We read the reviews which were great but had been told by others that the area was a bit dodgy. We were pleasantly surprised by what we found. The staff were really friendly, the apartment we stayed in was a bit old but was far more spacious than your average 3-star hotel room. The area wasn't too bad you just have to be aware of your surroundings and stay where all the people are. Restaurants and attractions are really close. This is a great hotel for anyone on a budget.

You don't need to pay big bucks in Hollywood to stay somewhere nice.
We stayed at the Hollywood Orchid Suites last month and were not disappointed.
On arrival the reception was not at street level and there is a locked glass door which greets you which is out of the ordinary but you will come to learn that this is for your safety while staying at the hotel.
When we checked in our room was not available so the receptionist arranged to hold our bags for us, we were travelling with a lot of heavy suitcases so we had to get the bags through the car park and up through the lift into the reception area.
The automatic garage door did come and crush one of our bags while we were transporting our bags in. This was probably the lowest point I would mark the hotel down on - as if this was a person who fell instead of a bag - they probably would be dead as the gate didn't retract back but kept trying to go down ... Luckily nothing major was damaged in the suitcase.
The rooms are comfortable and larger than a standard hotel room as the complex used to be residential units. Breakfast is simple but quite nice in the upstairs common area.
The hotel is perfectly located for most Hollywood attractions and is right next to the Metro station where you can get to Universal Studios in 1 block or the public bus stop where you can get to Warner Brothers in about 15 minutes.
Is the hotel perfect? No, definitely not. But you will get a comfortable stay with friendly staff and good value for money. Be prepared to carry your own bags - possibly up stairs by hand.

Stayed here with my husband and teenage boys, news years eve.
Location is great, close to all attractions we were interested in, universal studios just a train ride away.
Hotel only gets two stars, which I was very concerned about, but needn't have been.
It was very clean and roomy and very reasonably priced.
I would never pick a two star establishment ever, but trust me I've stayed in four star places that could learn a thing or two from this place.
Guys at front desk are extremely helpful and always replied to my emails.

We had a great experience here. Homely place with warm and friendly staff at all points on all the 3 days we stayed here. The room, breakfast and the arrangements make you feel absolutely comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped. We did not drive, but did not miss it at all - stores, metro, all the points of sight seeing.... right next door. Kids were excited about the cosy swimming pool as well. We checked in here after a long flight and found our choice could not have been better. Any queries were answered right away by the friendly staff. Just the right place for a family trip.

Very grateful to TA reviewers for pointing us in the direction of this hotel. It was perfect for our family of 4. Spacious, clean and well equipped rooms. Friendly staff, especially Patricia in the breakfast room. First time I've ever hugged a hotel staff member! No need for a car as public transport is nearby and probably quicker then driving. We used trains and buses to get to Exposition Park, Universal Studios, Santa Monica, Downtown, The Grove and Farmer's Market all with no trouble. Groceries a 5 minute walk west down Hollywood Blvd so we could prepare our own lunch and dinner, saving $$ and hassle. Breakfast was fine for us: oatmeal, croissants, bagels, yoghurt, fruit, cereal, tea, coffee, hot choc, juice. Our boys loved the pool which was heated and a few pool toys provided. All the excitement of Hollywood only steps away, yet the hotel is in a quiet, safe location. Perfect!
