Contrary to the previous reviwer, this hotel is neither filthy nor dangerous. It is no-frills but that is reflected in the price. It is very clean although slightly dilapidated. This area of Downtown is perfectly safe. Frankly, I think the previous reviewer is either insane or workiing for a rival operator.

This hotel is nothing more than a flophouse which preys on unwary tour groups and degenerate transient tenants. It is difficult to imagine the intelligence level (or hygiene consciousness) of anyone who would recommend it. It is filthy and dangerous.

The room was presentable, the TV/AC/lights were all fine, water temp and pressure was great. The neighborhood is so-so at night. For the price, it was a great deal, and saved me $$$$ over other name-brand hotels in the area. Front desk service is a bit blah.

PS: a co-worker staying at the Wilshire at the same time found a large bug in his $190/night room!

I agree with the other positive reviews - it's a great value. It's a 10-15 minute walk to the Convention Center, the hotel is clean, the staff is courteous, the wi-fi is fast. I really don't know what those hateful reviews are all about, except perhaps they are exposing some insecurities about a different culture (the entire staff of the hotel appears to be Indian). For that matter, Gill's - the Indian restaurant in the hotel - is quite good - I even brought my boss (who's staying at an "official" convention hotel out by the airport!) and a couple of co-workers there for dinner, and they were all impresssed with the food.

The hotel is located a few blocks from the Staples Center and convention center with many restaurants nearby and a big Ralph's supermarket 2 blocks away. Hotel is old but staff are obviously making an effort to maintain it with fresh paint and constant cleaning. Staff was ultra-helpful, let us check in at 7 AM when another hotel we'd booked online was unusable, did our airline boarding passes on their front desk computer, etc. Room was not too big but comfortable amount of space, big closet, good sized refrigerator, fastest free high speed wireless I've seen, plenty of hot water, good window air conditioner (a bit noisy). Beds were clean and very comfortable although linen was well worn. Price $40 a night less than cheapest nearby hotels. Recommended hotel to several friends who were paying more for less nearby.

I am going to keep this short and simple. Seriously people this is one of the many old, dirty, and cochroach infested hotels in Los Angeles. I had to stay here for the only reason it was cheap and close to the convention center. But next time I am willing to pay a little more for peace of mind.

This hotel smells and reaks of Indian food. There is no air conditioning inside. The elevator is very old and super small. It sometimes missed your floor and it made a very rickity noise. For some reason...even though the elevator was small, the staff kept a garbage can inside which reaked the elevator even more!

Then room was small and old. Even though I can live with the room...the bathroom was small and dangerous.

The water could turn hot and cold really fast for no reason. The toilet and sink was so close you could hit your head on it.

There is air conditioning in the room but someone must have been watching us all the time! Everytime we came back the air was OFF! And it is so hot outside you just want to come in and relax in the cold. NO! Someone keeps turning the air off. Ugh.

Please do not stay in this hotel!

We picked the hotel because it was cheap for the area, free parking and you could walk from the Orpheum. It's probably a good thing I was not sober checking in after the first nights show. Check in was easy, elevator dirty, got too our room and no air on. Turned on the wall unit and it did cool down. Our room faced the side parking lot (10th floor) so it wasn't noisy.

I have been in dirtier places....this place is old. So beds old, linens old. towels old, bathrooms old. For the most part as old and worn as it was I think it was about as clean as it could get. Housekeeping was helpful and did their best. Bartender was not nice (on multiple nights) and I wouldn't spend a dime no matter how cheap it was in there.

I did attach a picture(s) of "something" that was "drawn" on the wall bewtween the 2 beds when we arrived. Yes shocked at first - now it's just a good story to tell friends when they ask how my weekend in LA was. Area was pretty safe, very dirty, lots of rats. I counted 12 walking from the Stillwell to the Shell and back.

If you stay here you will come out with a great story. If your partying down town this will do it, bed, shower, fridg., ice, and AC. I have to say a plus was late check out was 8pm I think - for $40. All staff was very nice, helpful minus the bar maid.

Cheers!
