“Visited for a Wedding”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2013

Spent three nights at the Sportsman Lodge. The place is under construction and the smell of paint was evident throughout the building. The room we were in was remodeled, but I noticed there is not much space for clothing or hanging towels etc...The pool was nice as we hung out there a few times. The Patio Grill was a decent spot for food and not too expensive. The wedding we attended was terrific with great food and great atmosphere. The staff throughout our stay was very nice. If the place was not under construction the rating would be higher.

Room Tip: Ask for a remodeled room....there are still older rooms available.

Thank you for your review. The renovation at the hotel is almost complete and we are addressing some of the items you mentioned. We are looking into a bathroom towel hook. The closets will remain the same. We hope you will return and visit us again.
Thank you.

This used to be a wonderful place to stay. Now between the construction going on 8-8, 24/7, and the paper thin walls, you won't get much sleep. Even the hotel engineer couldn't get the new radios to work. Go to one of the motels on Ventura Blvd. I don't know if they'd be any better, but they couldn't be much worse.

Room Tip: Stay away from the pool area and the very loud piped in music.

Thank you for your recent stay at the Sportsmen's Lodge. I want to apologize that the hotel did not meet your expectations. As we try to improve our facility for our guests, this process has been a challenge as it is take place while the hotel is open. We have tried to do our best to communicate the renovation phases on our website and via social media to keep our guests informed. I hope you will return for a visit to see all the exciting changes we have done.
Thank you.

Was looking forward to staying overnight for our 50th Hollywood High reunion, but was disappointed as soon as we checked in with a $14 parking fee, which was supposed to be $5 negotiated by the reunion committee. Why wasn't it in their computers? We were assigned a newly refurbished room which looked nice (retro colors) but, they are under construction which is fair, but Saturdays and Sundays? The construction noise from inside the room, plus the drippy shower faucet, the sound of slamming room doors closing, and how well we could hear the conversations of the people in the hallways were all a big disappointment for this icon of a hotel. When checking out, they did waive the parking fee when I complained. Oh, and no glasses in the rooms for a drink or rinsing after a toothbrushing or enough toiletries for 2 people. Another thing, there's no blanket, only a heavy duvet and a sheet. Got very hot, but nothing for a happy medium, like a light blanket? Plus the air conditioning hit right on the beds. Sorry, but stay away from this place if you need a good night's sleep.

Room Tip: If you're into swimming and partying around a pool, this looks promising for you.

We arrived here on Saturday, this being our 4th stop on our honeymoon road trip. Hotel lobby looked very swanky, we were directed to our room on the second floor. It was a room that had yet to be updated so was quite dated and tired but when we asked Manny at the front desk if we could be moved he said we'd be able to on the Sunday when there were rooms free. This made our day. The refurbished rooms are great, good size TV and all the mod cons. Once this hotel has been fully updated it will be a great place. The old style rooms although not as swish are still comfortable and clean. It was the staff that really made it for us, everyone friendly and helpful. Great location for anyone going to universal, the free shuttle is reliable and hassle-free.

I was on a 15 day tour that started in San Diego, LA was our 2nd stop. Having never been to LA before I was very excited. I stayed here for 2 nights, my room was on the 2nd floor overlooking the newly renovated pool. The lobby and pool have been completely renovated and the rest of the hotel is still under renovations. They stop working at 5pm & don't start again until 8 or 9am (so the noise didn't really bother me much since I was busy touring the city both days and not at the hotel much).

The hotel is in a good location, off busy Ventura Blvd and is close to the 405 freeway access and Universal Studios. There was a Starbucks and a Ralph's grocery store directly across the street which I took full advantage of (had a refrigerator in my room--so was able to buy some snacks & drinks). This saved me from having to eat at expensive LA restaurants. My room was quite large (just me) and had a nice balcony overlooking the pool which I wanted to use but was too full for my enjoyment since it was 94/95 degrees during my stay.

During the hotel's heydays of the 1930's it was a popular spot for celebrities like Clark Gable, John Wayne, Bette Davis etc. Overall, I had a great time at the hotel and would stay here again if I ever came back to visit LA (hopefully it will be cooler next time!).

Room Tip: Get a room that overlooks the pool!

Based on our rate of $150.00 per night, we feel the Sportsmen's Lodge offers a lovely setting for excellent value. We stayed in mid-september on the the fourth floor in a garden view room and enjoyed overlooking the clean and colorful courtyard with its palm trees and huge pool. On weekends the facility is quite loud as they have a DJ in the pool area. If you want to drink and party a bit, a weekend stay might be for you. Once Monday rolls around, the hotel becomes very quiet and peaceful. The staff have been consistently pleasant and helpful and the renovated rooms are clean and comfortable. Room service isn't fancy, but the menu offers good quality, simple comfort food at an excellent price (around 12 bucks for a generous entree). There's a Starbucks and Ralph's grocery across the street and we asked for, and received, a fridge to store our purchases. The area feels very safe and major freeways are close by.
While we give this hotel 5 stars based on our enjoyment of the facility, this is not an 4 or 5 star hotel; if you are expecting a high-end, elite experience, it's likely not the right place for you - we noticed small 'mistakes' (missing room service menu, older shower-head, no hooks in the bathroom), but personally weren't bothered much by this. For us, the pleasant staff, clean rooms, decent food, and beautiful courtyard pool combined to make lovely accommodations for our trip to L.A. We would absolutely stay here again.

Room Tip: Renovated garden view rooms offer a pretty view of the courtyard. Non garden view rooms will be qui...

This is the 2nd time that we stayed at the Sportsmen's because of the location and great price for L.A. The hotel needed renovating badly. They are in the middle of renovating it, but they have updated the room, but not the bathrooms. The beds are comfortable, but the pillows are like sleeping on a rock. The pool area is very nice and the hotel is surprisingly quiet. They need to install refrigerators in all of the rooms that would be a big plus. The rooms are clean and the staff is very friendly and professional. They should spend the money to update the bathrooms and add refrigerators.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent visit to the Sportsmen's Lodge. Unfortunately the hotel will not stock each room with a refrigerator, however we do have mini frig's available upon request. I apologize that the bathrooms did not meet your expectations. The bathrooms were redone with new vanities, sinks, toilets and tiles. The bathtubs might be changed at a later time. We hope you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to see you again soon.
Thank you again.
