“Great for the theme park”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

We had a lovely time at this hotel which is just round the corner from the theme park (a short walk but there is a shuttle for the evenings and hot days). The lifts were erratic when we stayed but the staff were very good at marshalling them. Room and beds were comfortable and clean. Didn't try the buffet but the bar drinks were reasonably priced. And there are plenty of places to eat and drink just by the theme park.

We arrived quite early in the morning, around 9.00 am , and were very lucky to be allowed to check into our room, for a much needed nap, as we had just come from a 14 hour flight! Very close to Universal studios, which is why we had booked this particular hotel, with even a shuttle bus to take you there; we did use it the first day we went there, but walked after that, as it was only a minute away! Staff were very helpful as they directed us to where we could buy a GPS so we could continue our journey! Recommended!

We stayed at the hotel in late August 2014. We travelled as a couple as part of a California road trip.

Good points

1. Good in-room amenities. Free wifi, air conditioning, empty fridge, hairdryer, safe, iron, lots of power sockets.

2. Spacious room.

3. Friendly staff.

4. It's a 5min walk to Universal Studios. The hotel will tell you it's a 15min walk and they even lay on shuttle buses. Seriously, in order for it to take 15min you'd have to crawl on your hands and knees, it's very quick once you're out of the building (in relation to which, see point 1 below!).

Bad points

1. On arrival we discovered that there is major modernisation work being carried out for 15 weeks to the lifts. This caused CHAOS. We were staying on floor 18 and it took us 20min to get out of the building. The lifts stop at each floor on the way down even though people are crammed in there like cattle by floor 15. They currently even have a member of staff policing the lifts (that is certainly not a job I would want as the poor chap gets nothing but sarcastic remarks from frustrated guests). Before you even get in a lift (or at least one that there's room to get in) you're looking at a 10-15min wait. The hotel will not warn you about this before you arrive nor will they offer you a discount or even as much as a free coffee to say sorry. Instead they will leave a note on your desk suggesting you allow extra time to get to restaurants and shows! Talk about rubbing salt in the wound. If you are planning to stay at this hotel in the next couple of months I urge you to stay at the Sheraton 2min away. Waiting 10 min for a lift is frustrating and paying circa £150 per night for the privilege is hard to swallow. The staff are doing their best but this is management's fault.

2. Food is poor quality. You'd be better off eating out. The buffets and coffee bar food are really not great. The egg and ham croissants served at the coffee bar are inedible - microwaved and not fresh.

3. On leaving they tried to charge us for room service we had not ordered. This was quickly taken off the bill.

4. In light of point 1 above, I object to paying US$24 per day car parking. This would suggest i'm paying to enjoy convenience and this hotel is anything but convenient at the moment.

5. Small tv in room by US standards.

In summary, I can see why they're modernising this hotel. It needs it.

Hope this is helpful.

If you intend to visit Los Angeles and would like to go to the Universal theme park then this is a very convenient and relevant option. Numerous dining options are available at the City Walk which is either a 10 minute walk or there is also the option of a free bus shuttle. There are numerous options to also go to Hollywood from the hotel, such as the bus tours which is just a short ride to and from the Chinese Theatre.

We had a wonderful stay at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City. It is conveniently located near Universal Studios--about a 10 minute walk. The staff was courteous and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. Only thing is we wished we could have been on a higher floor so we could have had a better view but it was our choice as we wanted to check into our room early. We wish we could have stayed longer to try out their lobster buffet as it looked fabulous!

The hotel is easy walk to the Universal Citywalk and Studios, which was our main criteria for choosing it. We were even able to run back from the Studios to fetch some dry clothes for our kids when they got wet at 'Super Silly Fun Land'. The room was very comfortable with all the facilities you would expect and a great view. The service was personable and we got free Wi-Fi which was a nice and helpful touch. Parking charges are a bit steep at $24.00 per night but we knew this and it seems to be par for the course. Convert it to GBP and you'll feel a bit better. We didn't eat there or use the facilities, this was just a place to sleep and it did it's job admirably.
