“Good location for first timers to LA”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights to end a trip traveling around the West Coast. We arrived in the early evening and walked here from the metro station. Staff were very welcoming on our arrival and knowing it was out first time to LA, they helped us out with maps and gave us advice on tours etc. We got a suite room on the ground floor - huge for two people, especially as we were out all day.
Bed was very comfy and the shower was good. Free breakfast was ok - enough to get you started in the morning. As we were on the ground floor, we took it back to our room most mornings.
Location of the hotel is great - a short walk from the Walk of Fame, and good transport links nearby.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again should I return to LA.
Highlight was definitely the free snacks, drinks and DVD rentals!

We planned and booked our trip six months in advance. I was very excited about staying at the Magic Castle Hotel for 5 days. I exchanged a few emails with the hotel management; every response was quick and helpful. Reading the glowing reviews on Tripadvisor, I was confident that it would be the best part of our trip.

We had a good but not great time there. I do feel I was blinded by the great reviews and perhaps didn't pay enough attention to the mixed reviews. Tripadvisor is a community; whilst most contributors are honest and sincere, some exaggerate or vilify their actual experiences. Therefore I tend to take everything I read with a pinch of salt. The Magic Castle Hotel has 866 excellent reviews out of 1290, automatically it solidifies the hotel's good reputation.

The hotel doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. The staff is nothing but nice and helpful. We have travelled quite a bit and we were impressed by the quality and high standards of the hotel management. There was always a friendly face at the front desk, and they always had time to exchange a few words with us. We appreciated the sweet gestures, such as the sparkling lemonade upon arrival, the chocolates and fizzy wine for New Year's Eve, the cute duck left by the cleaning staff, the chocolates on the bed, etc... The free snacks and drinks were a big plus. It allowed us to not spend too much on food at Universal Studios or to stay in on evenings when we were tired.
The free breakfast was a nice touch. We are aware that is it quite rare in America. It was decent and sufficed.
We thought the DVD selection was a great idea for kids or for stay in nights.

Special thanks to Nick, who was charming, funny and helpful (and has a pretty great beard).

The hotel is on Franklin avenue, which is a block away from Hollywood Boulevard. There a metro station close by. Great location.

Our room #214 was located at the back of the complex. It was big enough for the two of us, had a queen bed, a desk and chair, a fridge, large closet, ironing board, a safe, classic sized TV and a small bathroom.

I have to mention the not so great. The very thin walls... We had loud neighbours and it was no fun. What didn't help was that we shared a fuss box with them. Clearly it could not support both rooms' electrical usage. So we kept having electrical overloads. This happened late of night or early in the morning, so the maintenance crew hadn't yet arrived. Most of the electrical outlets were worn-out and our plugs kept falling out. That and the power cuts meant wet hair in the morning and not fully charged phones and cameras.

The air con only blew cold air, so we had a small heater that we plugged in not be cold. We did find and use a comforter that was full of BIG holes (size of a fist). It left us unimpressed.

The very slow internet kept coming and going. I'm not sure if that was just in our room or in the entire hotel. We tried to make a few online payments and it was near impossible. Its was both irritating and frustrating.

The room was quite tired; peeling paint, stained carpet, graying plug outlets, etc... The bathroom was not exactly clean when we arrived, hair everywhere (walls, sink, ground). The walls were stained with mold or whatever else that was.

We are not fussy travellers; on the contrary we're easily pleased. We simply had expectations that were not met. Its the shame, the hotel has great potential but its is not exploited.

I stayed here back in January 2011(the drop pin did not give me 2011 as an option. I guess I'm reviewing years too late.) To start, the greeted us with a glass of champagne. I have not one bad thing to say about this hotel. It was simply the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The service was just outstanding. I am not exaggerating. ANYTHING you needed at ANYTIME they were able to provide it. I stayed in one of the 2 bedroom suites with my in-laws making it 2 couples(4 adults and a 1 yr old) and it was so comfortable that it felt like home. There was more than enough room for all of us. We did not feel crowded. Each couple had their own bathroom and they even had a crib/playpen in the bedroom for the baby. Just amazing. Really!!! I will stay here from now on when I go back to visit L.A. This hotel really helped my first time to Los Angeles such a great experience. We even extended our stay because New Jersey where we are from had a hail storm and our flight got cancelled. They welcomed us with open arms like we were family. I recommend Magic Castle Hotel to anyone looking for a great hotel with top notch service in Los Angeles. And honestly, I have been to 5 star hotels and none of their services has met Magic Castle's service yet!

From the moment you get there and even when you leave (providing you with snacks for the road), they provide unsurpassed hospitality. All employees have bought into treating the customer with great service and pride. Our family was able to comfortably stay in one large unit. On top of this Hollywood is at your doorstep and you get access to the World famous Magic Castle. We have stayed before and we already look forward to our next trip.

Our family of five stayed at the Hotel after reading a few reviews and thought that for the final three nights of our five week holiday it didn't matter too much where we were. It turned out to be the best choice and none of us wanted to leave. The value and position are 5 Star Excellent but it was the service and the extras such as free treats for the kids and the constant hospitality that made the visit so wonderful. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment which was charming and a great size. This has to be one of the best kept secrets in America. We will return and never look further than the Magic Castle Hotel.

Room Tip: Apartments for a family, road is a little noisy but you soon get used to it.

Stayed there twice when in LA in Dec. Exceptional service, the staff could not do enough for us. The rooms we had were great, 1 bedroom with full facilities. It is like walking into Melrose Place from the series. Be sure you enquire about getting into the Magic Castle next door, must be over 21 & formal wear including tie. Travelled with a 15 yo so didn't do this, biggest regret. Celebs go there all th time, Katy Perry, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway etc. Lots of Australians stay there so good to catch up with Aussies. Brekky was nice, loved the rock cakes. Planning to go back again soon.

There are many who have traveled more than my family but I believe we are pretty accomplished for a simple middle class lot. Destinations in Asia, Europe, Africa and of course North America we have stayed in some beautiful Riads, Hotels (all range of stars), and even the occasional Boma. To me what makes a hotel special are the small things and this is why Magic Castle Hotel is a real stand-out. They care. From the start when helping us find the hotel and where to park, to the end when they wanted to be sure we had snacks for the ride home. Small things yes, but it was that way every step of the way. The people make the business and they are a solid team of professionals. The property and amenities are simple and well cared for, location solid, but the reason for my Excellent rating is simple. They care! Thanks to Darren, Nick, Joslin, and all the Magic Castle Hotel for making an overnight stay in Hollywood special. Cheers!
