I stayed in LA for two nights after deciding not to risk a short flight connection at LAX (which turned out to be a wise move). I booked at the Orlando after reading positive reviews and searching its location.
The 3rd story room was clean and impeccable and particularly noteworthy are the the bathroom, the generously sized TV (if that's important for you) and the responsive air conditioning. The bed was comfortable enough for me to oversleep on my first morning.
The hotel's location on 3rd St is convenient, being a short walk away from two notable shopping areas: the Beverly Center to the west (where I bought jeans and sunglasses) and the Grove to the east (where I caught a film). A cab ride to the main Hollywood blvd strip cost me ~$10-15 at night. On a corner a few blocks west sits an old inter-war bottle shop, its slanted roof reaching to the ground as walls. Whilst I'm sure many wouldn't give it a second look, buying beer and chatting to the humorous (Russian?) storekeep was a highlight of my trip.
I appreciated the free WiFi though as others have pointed out, it can be flaky at times and on one occasion I couldn't get a stable connection to use Skype. My only other complaint would be that the hotel's ventilation is a little loud, although in my travels this seems to be a common feature across American hotels built in the last millennium. There was some bass emanating from the downstairs bar on the Friday night, although this didn't bother me too much.
The staff were friendly when giving me directions and I booked a 5:00am wake-up call on the morning of my departure which was gratefully received. The bellhop had no problems securing me a taxi and the trip to the airport cost ~$40 at that time in the morning.
(On that topic, as a result of my sleepiness and Australian upbringing I forgot to tip the bellhop until the cab had already left. The friendly man who was working in the early hours of August 12th certainly deserved one).
Overall, would stay again and recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the area.
