Sundance Lodges
Reviewed 5 October 2013

We've been camping at Sundance Lodges for a few years now. We've tried both the tipi and the trapper's tent and are happy with both. The staff are friendly and helpful. Upon check in, guests are given a map of the area showing the location of your dwelling in relation to the washroom, outhouse and water pumps. A lantern is also supplied. You can bring your own bedding and utensils or you can rent them. Quiet time is at 10:30pm and is well enforced which is perfect as it's hard to find campgrounds that do this. We love Sundance Lodges!

I stayed in the small tipi about 2 weeks ago. When I rented this I thought I was going to get a trapper's tent. I didn't make much of a fuss about the mix up. The tipi was cozy and its an original concept. The beds were uncomfortable! I expected a nice queen mattress, but no there is a wooden bed frame and a 3 inch thick blue mattress. The mattress is similar to the blue matts I used to use during gym. I was thankful it didn't rain because the tipi has a hole in the middle of it.
The heater was great.
The amenities were clean. There is 1 set of showers for the campground. There are plenty of washroom / port potty throughout the campground.

Found Sundance on Google and had a good look at their website.
What a great escape from the city only 45 minutes away from Calgary and enveloped in lovely wilderness.
The tipi was really authentic and awesomely cool!
I packed plenty of bedding including a feather mattress topper which did make the bed more comfy.
The heater worked well and although a chilly night we were very comfortable in our tipi.
The fire pit was great, we cooked our dinner over it.
Nice people run the place and we will definately return.

3 of us stayed in a large tipi and loved every minute of it!!! Check in was easy at the trading post where we were given a lantern and bought firewood for $7 per pack. We loved the tipi - wooden floors, beds and heater inside. The mattresses had a plastic outer so you definitely need a sheet of some kind of lining as the plastic gets cold. The tipi was very clean inside. The fire pit was great for cooking. The trading post has some supplies but try to remember all of your camping gear. The toilet and shower facilities were very clean. We'll definitely be coming again!!!

This is normal drive in camping! The reason I have to start the review with that statement is that my mother mislead me to a certian degree and I left all my camping gear at home! The only difference between this and normal camping is the fact that the tent is already provided. The beds in the tipis and trapper tents were okay but all it really is, is a yellow foam piece wrapped in vinyl. They do rent sheets and pillows which are nice.
There are no services at the sites, or at least the one we stayed at and the tipis are cool but they leak, there is a "old indian trick" but that only gets you so far. The trappers tents look way better and they have a veranda you can hunker under if the weather isn't co-operating, where as the tipis will require tarps if its not nice.
Bottom line, if you want to go camping in a tipi this is the place, if you just want to go camping you can do better.
The staff was nice and the location beautiful.

Room Tip: Old indian trick:Get a trappers tent if there is a hint of rain.

We just stayed here, 2 nights in a large tipi (39) and 2 nights in a trappers' tent (40B) to check them out. We had a wonderful time. We really liked where these were located as they are in a cul de sac of sorts, so only those staying in there drive in. Nice not being on the main loop but alittle farther to walk to the showers/bathrooms/store/water, but we didn't mind. 39 has the river that backs it so very quiet and nice. Our fave spot!! Both are spacious. Both have a double cot and two single cots.

The only benefit to the tent was that it is warmer; the tipi has a higher cone so more heat escapes that way. (It didn't rain while we were there but there seems to be a disk and a canvas cover that moves water away from the hole in the top.) We were very comfortable in it. We did not use the kerosene furnace the first night as it was warm. We did use it the second night as it got cooler. We would suggest you let it warm up for 15 minutes or so to let the smell dissipate. The tent is warmer only because the roof is lower.

Each site has a fire pit, picnic table and is quite sheltered. Bears are in the area so you need to put food and garbage away. A bear was shot at the Mt Kidd RV site while we were at the Sundance Lodges. People had left out food and the bear kept coming back. They had to shoot the bear because it now was a safety issue to the campers. It wasn't a bear problem, just human problem!!! Garbage bins are close by so easy to dump off stuff any time of day.

There are wells on site that require you to pump for water that you need to boil and also water available outside the store that is drinkable. The store sells firewood for $7 which is pretty reasonable and you will need atleast one a day for cooking, fires, etc. We rented a kitchen set that had pots/pans/coffee urn for the open fire and plates, mugs, water jug, and utensils $20 per day. We had our own Coleman stove but you can rent those for $10 per day. They provide you with a propane lantern which was great, but I would also pack flash lights as it gets dark there.

I am not a big camper. I have a bad back and mosquitoes love me. I generally do not like camping. I did enjoy this trip a lot. The showers and bathrooms were clean. The cots with warm sleeping bags were fine. There were mosquitoes but they were manageable!

My kids loved the river behind 39. There were two logs that acted as a bridge. They called the center section "their island!" The water is shallow so not a big worry. They spent much time out there, playing around and skipping stones. They checked out the beaver ponds which is also adjacent to the Lodges. The scenery was beautiful.

The flood caused major damage in Kananaskis Country. Very sad to see all the destruction, especially along 40 and the golf course. The golf course damage was so extensive. It was unbelievable, worse than you could ever imagine.

I have stayed at the Delta several times and driven right past this site. It really is a hidden gem. We will be back again.

P.S. Note about the previous review about the 10:30 no noise issue. Many stayed up past 10:30, noise was not an issue. People were respectful of their neighbours even if they were up late or up early!

Room Tip: sites 39/40 were our favourites! Tipi and trappers were both good. Worth it to try both. Staff kn...

The facilities were perfect. But if you plan on staying up past 10:30, be prepared to whisper.
Laughter and open enjoyment of ny kind is heavily frowned upon here as they seem to cater to a child friendly age where all should be tucked in very early. Heavily patrolled at 10:30 they sneak up to your campsite, turn off their flashlights and headlights and wait for voices to quickly put an end to as per policy. Not very relaxing.

Room Tip: Tipis are fun and comfortable.
