“Wonderful Mid-Week Getaway!”
Reviewed 7 February 2008

We stayed at the Malibu Beach Inn on a Wednesday night for my husband's 40th Birthday surprise. We really loved it.

After speaking with the property the night before and letting them know about the surprise, I booked a room with a Queen bed, fireplace, and small balcony. I asked them to make the arrival special for him, and requested an early check-in. The AAA rate was $328/night.

We arrived after wine-tasting at the Rosenthal tasting room a few miles north. Check-in was a breeze, the entire staff was friendly and helpful, and the sound of the waves is one of the first things you notice. The staff had prepared the room with rose petals, champagne, and a fruit plate for our arrival. Minutes later, reception came by with a delicious carmel/chocolate brownie for his birthday. We felt pampered right away.

The room was very nice, and though a little on the small side, used space well. The queen bed was an adjustment for us, but was extremely comfortable. There was a small sitting area in front of the fireplace, where you could see the entire bay. We sat in front of the fireplace while listening to the waves!

Throughout our short stay, there were many "little extras" you don't always see at this price point - complimentary Fiji water left in your car at the valet, colorful kimono robes in the bathroom as well as cotton robes in the closet, a soft throw blanket to offset the ocean breeze, Dean & Deluca mini bar amenities, and great bathroom amenities.

I don't agree with some of the prior negative reviews. The hotel staff was anything but pretentious. The room was decorated nicely with contemporary furnishings and materials, none of which looked cheap. I think the $328/night rate for our room was much more realistic than $500+...I'm not sure that it would be worth more. However, the MBI gives you the smaller inn feel that is very quiet (we could not hear PCH at all, only the waves and occasional muted voices from the restaurant patio below). The property is in Malibu, and rooms in Santa Monica further down the coast are similarly priced. We live in Los Angeles, and chose Malibu for the quieter, more secluded atmosphere.

Final note - if you stay at MBI, make sure to visit the Rosenthal Tasting Room a few miles north! It was wonderful as well!!

My wife and I stayed at the Malibu Beach Inn for few days and have to say we were pleasantly surprised. The location of the Inn is phenomenal right on Carbon beach lined with multimillion dollars homes.

The staff was accommodating and pleasant everyone seemed to have a genuine concern to meet our needs and went above and beyond to meet our expectations. The décor of the hotel was very tasteful and modern and had some nice luxury touches. We only stay at luxury hotels and this hotel met our expectations on many levels.

My understanding David Geffen is the new owner of the Hotel and he had recently invested millions of dollars into the hotel and it shows. We highly recommend this hotel especially if you’re staying in Malibu and are used to luxury hotels. The Malibu Beach Inn lets you really experience the Malibu lifestyle. As far as the previous review the hotel is built along the Pacific Coast Highway from the front of the Inn you can hear the traffic however from the rear the only thing we heard was the water crashing on the rocks below. They do charge $23.00 dollars a day for parking however it is valet service, which makes it a bargain. It might not be absolutely perfect but if you look at the alternatives it is well worth the cost.

this hotel is on a lovely spot and the rooms are oriented well to take advantage of the beach and views.
however, the luxury "design" of this hotel is getting in the way of the experience. i understand this hotel has just been re-vamped but the building materials used look and feel cheap, and the overall look is pretentious, trendy, and lacking in character, and makes one miss the building that used to be here.
the shower hardware fell off in my hand, the phone kept falling off the wall anytime i opened the bathroom door, my room door was not soundproof and felt hollow, and though i had a nice balcony facing the beach, the noise of the traffic on PCH was louder than the surf, even with the window open.
i also find it interesting that the more expensive the hotel the more they will charge extra for internet access, parking, etc. without stating their rates up front. when the room is so pricey, that's just annoying. one should not have to repeatedly ask "how much" for every little thing. $26 to park? are you kidding?

on the other hand, the staff were pleasant and efficient, and the service was wonderful. i want to give extra credit for how nice the staff was to me.

My wife booked the penthouse suite and it was extremely nice--excellent renovation and very comfortable. The suite included a balcony, and a very cozy king sized bed but I must say it was the most expensive per square foot room I've ever been in and we regularly book the best. You should have seen the closet!!
But it was nice and despite the fact we were right next to the Pacific Coast Highway, the room was very quiet.

We had a perfectly romantic stay at the Malibu Beach Inn. The room was awesome! We had a view of the ocean from our room and the hot tub on our balcony! My husband had secretely ordered the Romance Package and we had gone to a concert and when we returned the bed was turned down for us and covered in rose petals and a bottle of wine was chilling for us in front of the fireplace. And there was a box of chocolates also. I would love to go back some day.

My husband and I used to be regular guests at the Malibu Beach Inn, and it's taken us a long time to post this review as we wanted to think carefully about it. We had always looked forward to our yearly stays here, and prior to our last visit in Sep/06, the only words I can think of to describe each stay would be "ultimate dream vacation". Sadly, that changed greatly with our last stay. We had managed to get a booking for one last stay just prior to when the hotel was shutting down for renovations (I believe it's closed from approx Oct/06 to at least April? 2007 for complete renovations). So many things that we loved about our beautiful hotel will be gone or were already gone: the gorgeous Mediterranean decor apparently will be gone, the tall floor-to-ceiling California shutters which enabled us to leave the sliding glass balcony doors open at night are being replaced with curtains (closing the shutters at night enabled us to leave the glass doors behind them open, and therefore still listen to the fabulous crashing surf and keep the seagulls out), the pretty patio furniture on the gorgeous breakfast patio area had already been removed & changed to the most unpractical wicker furniture: for an open air patio with seagulls constantly flying overhead, we can only say we were shocked to see seagull droppings stuck in between the weaves on the top of each wicker table that had obviously only been wiped over with a cloth: it was quite alarming at the site of this when sitting down to breakfast or tea (and to say quite unsanitary!). What else will be gone from our beloved hotel we're not certain: we were told by the concierge that the hotel needed to be updated to "California contemporary" as they felt it was "out of date & out of style". We strongly disagreed and needless to say the concierge was not impressed that we stated we wanted the hotel to stay as is. Little did we know at that time that the near $300/night rates will be almost tripling after the renovations, which is just staggering to us, especially when one takes into account monetary exchange rates from our country. The staff were also very different during this last stay: prior to 2006, the staff always went above & beyond in being friendly, helpful and courteous, but the new staff during our last stay were distant, disinterested, and basically cold, very unfriendly and I'm just not sure how to put it, but came across as being "phoney" when we spoke to them. A couple of issues came up with our room that needed to be dealt with, and despite the concierge & staff promising to immediately take care of these problems, the end result was that they ignored us & nothing was ever dealt with despite repeated polite requests for assistance. Again, for a room that was approx $300 U.S./night we found this totally unacceptable. An earlier reviewer of this hotel had commented that the hotel was destined for very undesirable changes since being bought out by a group of investors & celebrities (who I shall leave unnamed in the interest of their privacy), and that reviewer was certainly correct: we were given the distinct impression during this last visit that the hotel will be leaning toward catering to the "celebrity" crowd in the future, and that our future business was no longer desired. All my husband and I can say is that we wish them luck in this, and they'll certainly need it, as we feel that the massive increase in room rates will turn out to be a very bad business decision. At least my husband and I have fond memories of this hotel, and we will now rely on other traveller's reviews of other Malibu hotels for a new "place in the sun": thank you to all who post reviews as we'll be relying on them. One last comment, the photos I've posted are what I could find to give a sampling of the former "look" of the hotel from the past few years.
