“A bit amusing to find Latinos making "authentic" Greek and Italian food, but, hey--it's LA”

Description: Old Venice was first established in 1984 by Jimmy and Julie and their 6 month old son Andrew. A couple years later, they added a new baby girl named Natalie to the family. In 2006 the building was tragically burnt down by a neighboring business and sadly in 2008, Jimmy was lost to a tragic bicycle accident. The Family stayed together through the tuff times and in 2009, Julie along with her two children, Andrew and Natalie rebuilt Old Venice to what it is now. Andrew is now the head chef, giving all his credit to his late father Jimmy. Julie and Natalie run the front of the house operations and the family continues to keep Jimmys Memory and legacy alive in the same way that he would have done. Don't miss out on one of the few businesses that has been in Downtown Manhattan Beach for over 30 years! OPA!

Nice place with friendly service. The food was OK, but it is hard to judge the whole restaurant on two menu items. The insalada caprese was certainly not what you typically find in authentic Italian restaurants--included a pile of potent minced garlic and mushrooms. My husband's gyro was just OK--lots of bread. House chianti was good but over priced. Nice cozy atmosphere. We would probably give it another try.

When we entered the restaurant I was worried that we might not have enough time on the meter for our car parking space. I decided to feed the meter but I should not have bothered. We were half way through our starters when the main course arrived. In hindsight should have sent them back but we ploughed on. 45 minutes later we were out and walking to the car. Food was disappointing and food arrived too quickly. Overall a very poor experience especially when it was a Greek/Italian restaurant where time should not be an issue !!

Nice to find this cozy restaurant in a sea of crazy loud bars and frou-frou neighborhood restaurants. As first glance we thought it was an Italian restaurant, but don't let the name confuse you... this is a Mediterranean restaurant, and half the menu is filled with Greek appetizers and main courses.

Nice atmosphere, and the mirrored wall at the end, makes it look larger than it is. After our meal we sat at the bar and had another drink. This restaurant is reminiscent of a place you'd find on holiday. We'll be going back here again.

Have eaten here twice on two separate business trips to LA. Great Greek menu, service and prices. Highly recommend the baby lamb chops, Horta and spicy feta dip. Everything excellent and colleagues cleaned their plates! Go here if in the area .....

Finally, we had the opportunity to try Old Venice for dinner - we were really looking forward to a great meal judging by the exterior of the property and looking inside. It is tastefully decorated and a nice staff. Being upfront with you readers, my husband and I have dined in both Italy and Greece many times and love Italian and Greek dishes so we had our expectations set high. Our evening was a disappointment, will share some one liners:
- Hummus was dry, so asked for olive oil and lemon to loosen it up, the pita bread did not taste fresh
- My husband's water glass had sediment in the bottom, he brought this to the attention of the waitress (who said she is one of the owners), she looked at him and asked if he wanted another glass - now, that's a duh, why else would he bring it to her attention
- My husband had Shrimp Scampi (menu says: "Six (6) large shrimp") - well, the shrimp were salad size, it has so much liquid sauce (like a broth out of a fish soup) with pieces of dough in it like they use the same juice for something else
- I had the filet of Calamari (had to ask if it came with a sauce, yes - Marinara sauce, it was weak); the lemon wedge that was on the plate had more lemon seeds than juice in that wedge (where's the attention to detail?)

We respect the positive reviews submitted by other diners, however, every one has different expectations of what real Italian and Greek food tastes like.
